Red interior is the only colour for a Black XJS! - looks brilliant - and the Walnut Trim is much better than the insipid light wood fitted before. Not sure about black headliner - it may darken the interior too much with black carpets.

Red interior in a black car just looks right, very happy with it. Yes I thought the darker wood would work well. I get your point, it might make it feel too dark, I’m still a bit undecided.

Have had 2 identical 89.5 XJS V12 in black on black over the years - it's a sumptuous combination. Agree 1000% on the burled walnut vs that light maple (or elm?). The beige headliner and buttress panels also need to go.🍸

Try bolting down the fronts first on the passenger seat rail.

Tried that, tried everything. I think the rail just hasn’t been fitted to the seat properly. Putting the fronts in, it skewed the whole seat so the back right of the seat was pushing really hard up against the centre console and hole wasn’t lined up. Hole mot lined up on back left either

Nice job, it looks like a completely different car. Although a black headliner would be better, I could live with the beige. But I can't live with 11mpg, so no V12 XJ-S for me.

Yes I think black would top it off. Yes 11mpg hurts, but the 6 I get around my house hurts even more!

whats the plan with the headliner? red rear quarters to continue the red line to the back of the car and black on the roof to break it up? cant wait to see how it turns out in the end, even if I will be sad to see it go. if you manage to pick up something japanese, maybe you can stick with the high cylinder count and get a toyota century with the only production japanese V12 lmao.

Was the red interior a rarity on the XJS or fairly normal in the period? I have a black Capri with red interior and it suits so well but is near impossible to source coloured spares for. The coachline fits better with a matching interior and the atmosphere of the car is improved. You did really well to change it over so quickly and deal with the frustrations - there's always going to be some.

I’m not 100% sure if it’s rare but definitely don’t see many around with the red interior. It was quite simple so happy with how it came out. As you say, few issues but that’s how it is!

Im located in California, so I think the shipping would be prohibitive to buy your old seats and center console. But I am interested if the stitching is good. Jeffrey

Hi Jeffrey, I think posting out would be a dealbreaker due to size and weight. Not sure it would be economical for you. There is a tear in the drivers side, not too bad though. The rear isn’t great as I sat in it and it pulled the corner stitching, I think it was rarely sat in so there wasn’t any movement in the leather.

How did you remove the side peices in the rear that hold the speakers? I want to do new speakers and wires...

I think the black door edging strip came off and revealed some screws. Another screw behind the lower seat area and maybe one near the top at the rear of the car? I can always have a look at the old bits and send some photos over if you message me on instagram?

Are the red seats out of a facelift? They look ‘curvier’ than the flat seats I have in my ‘85 XJS. I wonder if they changed them slightly which is why they aren’t fitting on the passenger side. Looks good though.

I’m not 100% sure. They look very similar side by side. I believe the bottom is wrong because the rails have been fitted badly. Don’t know for sure though. Just won’t have a passenger in it until it’s sorted. Not that they’d fair much better in the back with no seatbelts anyway 😂

Looks lovely. I found a place that with supply you with red xjs carpet put comes at a costs. I believe with the door cards, you remove the old backing and then re re glue to the new ones. Sounds so simple 😂

I spent $14K for a new bell housing, the tranny, stiffer springs, a new set of aluminum wheels from an Aston Martin and some exhaust rework. Work was done by Keisler Engineering in Tennessee.

The very poor build quality has always put me off an XJS. Had a couple of first generation XK8's which although better made still suffered from corrosion. An R129 Mercedes SL is just in a different class. However the red interior and new wood is a huge improvement.

Yes the changes made a massive difference and was very happy with them. SL has been a potential for the future 👍🏻
