I've had chickens for many years. Never have I ever used artificial light in the coops. On their 1st night out we just put the chicks in the coop around dusk. In the morning they see it's light outside and head out. Come dusk they head into the coop even though it's darker in there. Usually, just one has to figure it out and then the rest follow. Your stone coop/goat shelter is really impressive.

My chickens free range. When it is close to sunset, the chickens automatically head to the coup. Once in awhile I have to bribe them with some feed, to get them all in the coup. I use no light to get them to go in. The younger chickens, see the older go in and they follow the leaders. I always keep count, and if one strays, I go look for it till, I find it. Then I herd it into the coup. Overall, I have no problems. I like your setup. It is really cool. Thank you for sharing.

I raised my chickens in the coop, when I finally opened the door to a two acre parcel that I fenced off they would go out and eat. During the day if something scared them they would all run into the coop( Hurricane proof, I live in Florida). At night they automatically went into the coop and I would go out and shut the door. Never had a problem.

Great idea adding the light. Do you typically keep the light on all night long?
@SSLFamilyDad2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I just leave it on most times. I have used a timer in the past also but they don’t seem to mind the light

Have you done a video tour of your coop? I’m building one about the size of your as we speak. Also what sort of predatory precautions do you implement? I’ve had some issues with raccoons lately

First time subscriber and brand new to chicken raising. Downloaded your original coop plans and will start building soon. I have about an acre wooded lot that I'd like to have them free range in down the road but have a lot of clearing to do first and fencing to put in. Your channel is a wealth of info! I'm planning on starting with 3-4 hens first and will add a rooster later. Question... if I build the coop in the next couple weeks, being July, can I get hens this summer or should i wait to start with chicks next spring?
@SSLFamilyDad2 жыл бұрын
You could get late summer chicks but may want to wait until spring if you have cold winters

Great tips! We also doubled the size of our flock this spring. I used all the tips you mentioned to integrate the new hens with the old. I was struggling with the issue of the new hens sleeping in the egg boxes rather than roosting. I think I finally have them broke of sleeping in the egg box but I'm still struggling with getting them to roost in the coop. They still like sleeping on the floor of the coop. Any suggestions?
@SSLFamilyDad2 жыл бұрын
I have had that issue with some as well. Make sure there is enough roost room and that they are higher than the nest boxes

So what kind of retirement plan do you offer your hens? Personally I don’t cull hens that stop laying, especially ones too small to eat, so I’ve moved away from IsaBrowns. To keep a chicken 5-6 years that only lays for 3-4 years didn’t work for me. Isas averaged 1/2 egg/ day. Dual purpose birds may only average 1/3 egg/day but don’t live so long after productivity and can be eaten. Great video! Much love brother 👍🏻
