Thanks for sharing your tips!! I was wondering, is there any reason why not painting on the canvas directly?
@valeriarachelherrera66954 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing with us, Sergio! Very helpful!! Can I ask if you ever coat the finished piece with gel medium as a protective layer? I work with oil sticks on mylar and considering using your method. Curious of Gel Medium would be helpful in preserving the texture and marks made with oil sticks...preserving from the medium flaking off.

Hi, great information.. thank you! I'm confused as to two things you said and how they work. 1) you said you can paint on the paper first then adhere it OR you can adhere the paper then paint on it after it is attached to the canvas... however at the end of your video you say 2) you put another coating of gesso OVER the paper. So if you, paint or print images on your paper FIRST (before you mount the paper on the canvas) then wouldn't a second coat of gesso over the paper cover up your work?... I would like to mount printed pages from a book on canvas then paint onto the printed pages... would i put another coat of gesso (or do you mean gel?) over the entire finished piece ? or would i put another coat of gesso (or gel) over the printed pages BEFORE i painted my acrylic picture over the mounted book pages? The idea is to be able to read the words in the negative spaves in the painting and some of the words will show through the image i paint over the pages (using acrylic paints). any help or clarification would be greatly appreciatted. thank you again.

Hi Sergio. I have done lots of works on large pieces of paper for a while now and I am so pleased to watch you video about adhering paper to canvas. I have thought of board however this makes a piece of work very heavy. I am now experimenting as you suggest with a small piece. I use a lot of different acrylic mediums and there are so many varieties. Could you let me know what medium you use? is it like a liquid, a medium gel or heavy gel? I will try some of the stonehenge paper and see that the weight is 250 gsm. I am not sure what I am using at the moment but it may be heavier so might not work so well. However as you say you have now perfected the method and I intend to do that as well as it is such a great way to display large works on paper. Funnily enough I had already bought grommets as I had intended to use them on the corners of the paper. Using them on the canvas is a much better idea. thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your knowledge!

Do you wrap the canvas around stretcher bars like a traditional canvas? If so, I’m guessing you can’t wrap the paper too.

Great approach! I love the look of your pieces. Where exactly are the grommets? They are attached at the back, behind the canvas somehow?

Yes they go in each corner. Grommets are used on banners. Its a metallic ring. www.buygrommets.com/buygrommets/Clipsshop_grommets-pagename-ClipsShop%20Grommets.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIg_LDvqb82QIVhIizCh2KeQfREAQYASABEgLHLvD_BwE

Glad I caught this episode, I've been wondering what was the best way to adhere the paper to canvas. Agree that gel medium is a great adherent, but is rather aggressive! How long should it "cure" before you can start painting, and do you use it as a sealer also after your finished painting? Does the painting ever bleeds during the process? Perhaps you can record your process for a little demo. Always grateful for your insights!
@sergiogomezart5 жыл бұрын
Gel medium is very safe to use as adhesive. I find it easy to use and clean up and excess. Sometimes I use it as a sealer too. In 24 hours is very safe to paint over the surface.

It cannot be stretched with the paper because its too think. However, you can adhere paper to pre-stretched canvas :)

How do you prevent the canvas edges from fraying? The gel takes care of that maybe?
@sergiogomezart6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I trim the paper and the canvas at the end and paint a 2" white frame all around. You can also put acrylic gel medium in your fingers and spread all around the edges for a perfect clean edge and no fraying. :)

I repaint the edges with white paint since I leave a 2" white border all around.

Sorry if you’ve answered this already. I also love,painting on paper, such a different finish from canvas. However i ‘ve always tried to adhere it to already stretched canvas and I always wind up with bubbles. Have you tried your technique on stretched canvas?? Also, once the painted paper has wrinkles, how can I flatten it out. Please help,,, anyone.

Hello! When you work on paper, do you mount it to canvas before your start your painting? I work on paper using acrylic ink and want to do a large painting 48 x 60 inches. The paper I am using is 300 gsm, but I am worried about it warping if I work on it before its mounted (which I imagine will make it very hard to mount later!)
@sergiogomezart Жыл бұрын
I suggest to test it first with a smaller paper. Yes, mount it first to make it easier and avoid more warping

Do you put anything on top of your painting to protect it? I have a collage of magazine clippings on a large piece of watercolor paper and I've been trying to figure out what I can seal it with without making the paper peel or become brittle, and without making it see-through. I used a glue stick to glue the magazine clippings onto the paper. Do you have any suggestions for me?
@sergiogomezart5 жыл бұрын
Yes, next time do not use glue stick. It will start peeling off eventually as the glue dries up. Instead use Acrylic Gel Medium. www.amazon.com/Liquitex-5321-Professional-Matte-Medium/dp/B000KNJFKI

Hi again! I'm going to try this for a large show next year. Do you just use a metal straight edge for trimming? and have you ever used a Canson watercolor or mixed media paper instead? Those are more afordable but not worth it if they don't hold up.
@sergiogomezart6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have used both Canson and Mixed Media paper. They both work great!! I use a long wood stick to draw the straight lines around it and then I trim it with scisors. Then last step I paint them. I have an actual step-step video tutorial on this inside my coaching program. Check it out at www.theartistnextlevel.com It is part of the many video tutorials offered in the program. Cheers

Do you gesso or apply gel medium on the back of the paper before adhering it to the canvas? (letting it dry in advance). Do you recommend a particular thickness for the canvas? Medium weight perhaps?
@gigiscreativestudio99526 жыл бұрын
I know it is late asking but why do you paint on paper and not on the primed canvas itself?
@sergiogomezart6 жыл бұрын
I love paper. It's surface and the way paint reacts to it fascinates me.
@philippasibert79545 жыл бұрын
sorry me again! can I check that you paint the medium only on the primed canvas before laying the paper on top?
@jeffharms3 жыл бұрын
Id like to know this as well. Typically people say apply medium to both sides but at this scale its gonna be harder and messier. clarification would be great that hes definitely just covering the canvas w medium. And then sounds like he sometimes adds another layer over the finished drawing after theyre attached.

1) Why adhere a paper on canvas and not paint on canvas ?? 2) When your roll the canvas with the paper on, isnt the paper wrinkled after you unroll it? 3) Is it possible for anyone to take along pieces of canvas and connect them on the show to remake a canvas?
@sergiogomezart5 жыл бұрын
1. Because I love the paper surface more than canvas. The way paint adheres to paper is different than canvas. 2. No wrinkle if you roll the paper in a wide roll of about 8 to 10 inches in diameter. Once you unroll you let it relax for a few hours and will be nice and flat. 3. Not sure about what you mean on this question. I guess yes, you can add pieces of canvas to make a bigger one. Not sure if that is what you are asking. :)
@theharart5 жыл бұрын
Sergio Gomez Thank you for your reply! I realised why you prefer painting on paper when I tried to paint on canvas (which I havent done before) and saw the difference. You are so right! Thank also about the 2nd one- although you mention it in the video I wanted to make sure. *So I guess you put them in large tubes and take them with you? A lot of luggage? About the last one, I mean if its easy to reconnect the wooden pieces of the canvas (on which the painting is stretched) take them with you, and connect them again ar the show to stretch your piece on it..... Or maybe this is too difficult to do?
