i have been buying these collars for the past year for my daughters (my grand doggies) flat coat retrievers (now a year old and a lot bigger) for each stage of growth and leash training i get them from amazon - collar instructions are never included but so glad you stressed that these collars should be replaced with a regular collar the dogs are with me all the time with these collars on but off they come at night when it’s bed time for them glad that i finally found and watched your instructional youtube thank you

I am glad you stated to be sure that the two rings didn’t touch, now I know where I went wrong after placing the collar on my dog. The collar was too loose. Thank you for this video! 😊 3:37

Thanks! Again, great information! I do remember that I ALWAYS removed the Martingale collars from my dogs because the loop can get caught on something and hurt them.

This type collar is the only collar to use. I used them on my two Rat Terriers. If a dog spooks, they can't slip out of the collar. I took them off when we got inside the house. Never keep them on a dog inside the house or in the yard. That ring can catch on something.

I am glad you stressed not leaving them on when unattended. When I took my daughter's dog to board in a kennel, she had on the martingale collar that I made, and I also took a standard collar that had a buckle. When we picked her up, we were not told of the incident with the martingale collar. She (the dog) was able to slip the collar off her neck and chew near the rings. I am just glad they were able to get it from her before she shredded it completely because she could have swallowed the rings.

M D So scary, and just as scary that they didn’t tell you about it. Yes, it is so important to use martingale for training purposes and walks and take them off and replace them with a flat collar when you get home, or can’t watch them 24/7. Thanks for sharing your story and glad your dog is ok!

Great, clear methodical tutorial for someone like me who hasn't yet bought a martingale, but planning to. Couple of quick questions please: My SMALL Podenco Andaluz (Andalusian Hound) has been advised to use a harness as well as a regular collar since she's a nervous rescue dog who could escape. We use a lead divider which attaches to both the collar and the harness (on her back) simultaneously. 1. Would a harness affect the normal performance of a martingale? 2. Most of the martingale collar here in the UK are quite broad as they're used for dogs much bigger than mine eg Lurchers, greyhounds, larger podencos etc. Could my small Podenco still use one of those collars assuming, of course, that the martingale is the correct size for the girth of her neck? 3. Martingales are typically very secure, but would it become less secure with the addition of her harness? Apologies for the long-winded questions 😀. Many thanks 👍

Thank you so much for the compliment! Okay, so... #1. We do not recommend using a martingale in conjunction with a harness. We understand why they advise using a regular collar with a harness, but I would just keep using a regular snap or buckle collar for that purpose, as yes, it's possible a harness could affect the performance of the martingale. #2. Sighthounds do look fantastic in broad collars and I especially like the broad tapered collars on them! It looks to me as though the small Podenco Andaluz has a long neck and is about the size of an Italian Greyhound? If they are, then yes, they probably could wear a broader martingale, but a 1" collar would fit them well. #3. Yes, martingales are very secure and if adjusted correctly, your hound won't be able to slip out of it and shouldn't need a harness as extra security. But, saying that, there are different styles of martingales and some are made with a quick release snap, and some are even break away collars, so be sure to purchase a martingale that doesn't have those two features. Also, I don't remember if I covered this in the video, but in case I didn't. It's always a good idea to take the martingale off a dog when they are not supervised. I use martingales for all of my dogs when I take them for walks and then remove them when we get home, as if they get the loop caught on a knob or something they will begin to struggle and the martingale will twist and continue to tighten around their neck, strangling them. So, we recommend using martingales for walks and training and replacing it with a snap or buckle collar when at home. Thank you so much for your comment and question!

Thanks so much for taking the time to give me such a comprehensive answer. Everything you advised makes perfect sense. I didn't even realize the potential of a martingale to be dangerous while unsupervised, so glad you pointed that out. Looks like I'll have to decide between the use of a harness and the use of a martingale collar. Thankfully the info you gave me helps me to arrive at a decision. Thanks again, and greetings from Scotland 👍

We have a martingale collar for our greyhound but it is very stiff, so tightening it when putting it on and loosening it when taking it off is quite difficult. Does anybody have any tips?

There is a husky doggy I caught when she had this gravity feed or stuck on her head She wound up in the shelter then they were going to euthanize her so I adopted her but now I can't catch her again in my own yard so I ordered a martingale collar and can't get it on her I have to find another way to catch her going to use a throw net but the collar has to stay on her 24/7 along with the leash because there will be no other way we could get it back on her for training but I will observe her of course for safety at all times

Once the collar is properly sized and on your dog, the 2 rings are NOT supposed to touch, right?
@fairytailcollars4997
@fairytailcollars4997 2 жыл бұрын
That's right. If they touch, it probably adjusted too much and easy for the dog to slip out of.

When using the martingale do you recommend taking the regular collar off, or is it ok to use the martingale with a regular collar on? Thank you!
@fairytailcollars4997
@fairytailcollars4997 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Roy, Sorry for the delayed reply. It's personal preference. A lot of our customers use the martingale for walks, but leave the regular collar on, which holds the tags. This way the leash hardware doesn't continuously hit the tags and make a lot of noise. We just always recommend taking the martingale off after a walk/training and leaving the regular collar on.

My problem is all adjusters are plastic, they all slip. Am I the only person having this problem? I might try yours but if it slips can I send it back. The only way I have made these adjustable slip things is to sew the collar.

do you have to unjust it to get it off and readjust each time you put it on?? No one ever shows taking it off HA
@fairytailcollars4997
@fairytailcollars4997 3 жыл бұрын
Good question x Steel. No, you shouldn't have to unadjust and readjust everytime you put it on/take it off. Maybe if the dogs head is much larger than their body, yes, but for the most part, once the martingale is adjusted the first time, it should fit over the dogs head just fine when taking off/putting on. We'll make another video to include the collar being taken off. Thanks for your question.

So this looks like it will adjust large enough to get over my Giant Schnauzer's posted ears. Hmmmm. If this is sufficient for a pup who still pulls at times, rather than a training collar, that would be great!!!!

@fairytailcollars4997
@fairytailcollars4997 2 жыл бұрын
Is your dog a greyhound? I ask because that is common for greyhounds, or sighthounds to wear only martingales. Your dog certainly should not be raw around his neck and scratching, though. You need to make sure you have the collar fitted properly and will want to feel around the back of the collar to see if there is anything protruding that is causing discomfort. Also, we do not advise keeping a collar on your dog at all times, especially martingales. We recommend using them for walks and training only and then taking them off once home and or unsupervised, as accidents can happen where the collar or the loop of the collar wraps around a knob or other dogs jaws which can cause severe injuries or death.

Why do people like these cloth martingales? They don't work as well as the traditional martingale with a small chain. The main reason is your dog gets no audible warning. Pretty stupid if you're trying to communicate with your pet. I would only use a cloth martingale after my dog was successfully trained on a chain martingale.
