quick question how does making the spring less compressed make the ride height lower? if the spring was tighter and therefore smaller top to bottom wouldn't that make the car lower?

The reason is because the spring will only compress so much with just the cars weight sitting on it, so when you try to compress it more it will raise the height of the car. Hope that makes sense, not the best explanation.

Because it is not about spring compressing. You just move down the point where the spring is sitting so it's sitting closer to the wheel. Another effect of this is decompressed spring when the car is in the air but it doesn't affect spring while the car is on the ground. Spring always gets more compressed by the car weight so its compression in the air doesn't matter.

For rear same principle, on roadster I use to unbolt suspension at lower point and lift he car to adjust them

iv just bought a car it looks good but the ride is extremely stiff over bumps would raising the coilivers slightly make things a little better in situations like this

Maybe you already have lowered springs, if you do, cheaper option will be to replace with stock. Cheapest coilovers are 700€ (Bilstein B14) and yes you can rise the car but comfort will be as stock car.

Not these. These (B14s) are not true coilovers. It’s more like a threaded strut and spring assembly. To lower or raise the car, follow the instructions. However when changing ride height, you are compressing or decompressing the spring which effects ride quality. I find max low provides the best ride, likely because the spring has less preload and more room to travel. My 19s are more comfortable than stock 17s. The springs are very aggressive and unforgiving. May want to swap the springs. True coilovers have an additional spindle which allows you to spin the assembly to lower and raise the car. true coilovers also allow for spring tension/preload adjustment as seen in this video.

@@bigshooTer39 car weight on the ground ompress spring more than changing ride height while the car is in the air so it doesn't affect ride quality as you said. This what can change it is less or more damper travel

Rear is little bit tricky because it is separated from suspension. However you have to lift the car, I found it easiest to remove the wheel, disconnect lower part of suspension and then adjust it.
