This Video will Show You How to Fix Backlash on Mill Down Feed Movement (Z Axis) - Adjusting Backlash on a Smithy Machine.
Backlash is the result of a gap between the handle and the Z Axis feed screw on a mill. This "slop" causes a lag in the movement of the spindle when you turn the handle to engage Y Axis movement of the spindle.
Tightening backlash is one of the first adjustments that you must make when you set up a new machine. It is important, also for you to understand what is happening so you can achieve accurate results.
Dave shows you how to properly tighten the Z axis feed screw, nuts, and slides to minimize backlash in a new machine. This adjustment is also something to always keep adjusted for tightness.
