wow that valve compressing tool you made is pretty ingenious George. That's called necessity is the mother of invention. Great work George and thank you for the video.

I don't have a clue about how to adjust the valves on a flathead, but I need to do so on Dad's old John Deere tractor. This video is just what I needed to see. Thanks George.

That's why I made it, for better or for worse, since I couldn't find anything specifically for the opposed twin engines online. Hopefully this will help. Thanks Richard.

That is the same temps we had but didn't get the snow, just a little sleet. Nice job on the valve adjustment. Try to stay warm George.

Thanks Lloyd. Warmer weather is coming!

Great diagnosis George! That engine will run like a top now. You folks received more snow than we did in northwestern Ohio, we were a bit colder, but not by much. Stay warm!

Well my low here was -10° the night before last and sadly the snow is still on the ground. It will be gone early in the next week as we push all the way up to 63° next Wednesday. Thanks for stopping by Ken.

Iam working on a 12 hp Briggs and it is rough shape mechanically,, water,gas in the oil as well as rust now. I’ve just started the process of get ting it back to running. So far I’ve done the oil x2,removed head and replace head gasket and have notice the valves are seating that well,, so your video has been a big help in the confidence to get it done .Thankyou

Glad to be of help. I have double checked my valve adjustments. I am looking forward to getting to drive this Goofy Cart again, pretty soon! Thanks for stopping by.

Haven’t done this in 5 years now, not many left and being used 😮😮😮. But was a pretty good engine overall 😊

It runs pretty well. Thanks for taking a look.

That will cause it for sure George. We got about 8" here at our house close to the airport. Got down to at the house last night or this morning. We haven't had this much snow in several years. Hope this solves the problems with the engine and don't find anymore!

Thanks Bob. I hope this makes it run much better too.

Thats what my Briggs and Stratton is supposed to do, for easy starting lowering the compression, on the camshaft is a centrifugal weight that lets the exhaust valve close completely once its running about 1500rpm and upwards. I usually end up removing this device on the older engines with a lot of hours and lower compression anyways. Sometimes they stick from lack of oil changes, and will keep the exhaust valve open slightly, at higher rpm than it should.
@TheShadeTreeFixitMan10 ай бұрын
I'm not sure that that is what is going on here, because of what was happening after it was running? Either way, it will be done away with. Thanks for the information.

great video thankyou.. silly question when you are checking the clearances near the end after grinding i noitice you dont have the outer crank cover on , so crank and cam wont be central and clearances wrong ?????
@TheShadeTreeFixitMan2 ай бұрын
The gears can't change place on either crank or camshaft since the bearing on the crankshaft is press fit in place and prevents either of those gears from being pulled out. Good observation that no one else seemed to catch. Thanks for the question. The only silly question is the one you don't ask.
@MissouriOldTimer10 ай бұрын
yes, it's way too cold for me out in the shop,, it's been about -7 here for a night or so and not a lot better during the day,, you got a lot more snow than we did, I doubt we got 2 inches all together.
@TheShadeTreeFixitMan10 ай бұрын
At least we can look forward to warmer weather. We are supposed to be hitting the 60s again by next week and rain on Thursday with highs into the middle 30s, so our snow should be gone by the end of the week! Thanks for stopping by Vernon.
@simonallan994110 ай бұрын
If you remove the camshaft and check to see if it has one of those centrifugal decompression devices installed on this model, if so its easy to remove it, incase its spring is stuck on starting position.
@TheShadeTreeFixitMan10 ай бұрын
I would like to do that, but it is blocked by the crankshaft bearing that is pressed on. If I knew of a way to remove that bearing without damaging it I would. I already have the cover off, because I wanted to double check the timing, but that is hard to do for the same reason. More investigation for sure. Thanks for stopping by and for the great suggestions!

You're absolutely welcome and I really appreciate such an ingenious use of a classic design engine, wish I could be of help with your project and thank you kindly for sharing great photography with clear description. Kind regards from Rotoma Auto Repair, our lake came up 4 meters above normal and workshop floor is 1.2 meters below water table 😅
That's always a good idea! Thanks for stopping into the shop today.

Thank you Greg. We've been down to -10° in the last day or so at night. Not the usual temps for this part of Tennessee. Warmer weather next week! Up into the 60s.

Just a question George. Could worn bearings on the cam cause the valves to stay open?
@TheShadeTreeFixitMan10 ай бұрын
I'm not sure about that, though I have never heard of that being an issue. I will investigate that possibility. Thanks for the great question. It's always worth checking these things. I haven't worked on this particular style of engine before, so I am not aware of their peculiar issues, but I'm learning. One thing I have discovered is that there doesn't seem to be a compression release on this engine, which had been a concern originally.

I don't know why this showed up 3 days Late ,but I'm sure you've solved the problems by now and don't need suggestions. I want to Ask if you've heard of this method to check valve clearance.>Use strips of Solder in the valve seat and let it close to crush in 2 places, and then measure the thickness at the dents so you know the minimum to grind? Thanks George, and friends.
