I just tried both the new cold brew method and the hot water method side-by-side, and I have to agree with you. Although I must say, I was very surprised at the lovely floral, sweet and subtle undertones of the cold brew in such a short time. A perfectly delicious cup! The hot water method yielded a bolder first impression, which I enjoy immensely, and while I could detect those undertones, it took quite a while to get past that initial boldness to taste those subtleties. I will use both methods! How wonderful to know that I can use water straight out of my canteen to make a delicious cup of coffee without heating up water when hiking. Thank you so much for this video.

Well ... I tried it out. I used 15g of Ethiopia Haru Suke (Yirgacheffe) from Yume Coffee, and 60g of water, grind size is 6 on the Wilfa Uniform. It produced a decent iced coffee, and this would work great if you don't have access to hot water. But if you do have access to hot water, I'd pick the hot Aeropress over ice as well. Thanks guys.

Thank you!! I feel vindicated from my coffee buddies who rolled their eyes at my "quick" Aeropress cold brew recipe. Now I can tell them Alan Adler agrees. ;-) I must admit I was very skeptical when I first came across this idea a year ago, because everyone was saying a long brew time was an absolute must. I gave your recipe a try (espresso grind for 2 min). but my results were a bit cloudy/murky from what I had been getting in my Aeropress cold brew. The recipe I've been using the past year is similar but creates a cleaner cup (in my experience). I use a slightly courser grind ... more like a "fine" Aeropress grind. The max. amount I can make at one time in the Aeropress is 25g coffee w/ 150g water (approx. 1:6 ratio). I say "maximum" quantity because any more will be very difficult to press through the paper filter. This ratio (1:6) makes a concentrate because I prefer to dilute my cold brew with tonic and ice. On occasion I may include a subtle accent of ground cardamom in the brew or served with a rosemary sprig, etc.. :-) Nice! To compensate for the "slightly" courser grind from your recipe, I extend stir time (1-2 min.) and extend the total extraction time to 10 min. (includes stir time). I love the cleaner results and 10 min. is still an acceptable wait time for me. ;-) This makes enough concentrate for two good sized glasses of cold brew+tonic w/ice.

@illustratedWORD2 жыл бұрын
@@adityagondalia7285 Correct. Because it's room temperature water and not hot, the coffee extraction will be very slooow to where extending the time is very "forgiving" and will have no noticeable effect on the brew. I've let it go for 15-20+ min. (forgot to set a reminder alarm ;-) and did not notice a difference. For example, a popular way to make cold brew at home is to use a french press and let it sit overnight in the fridge.

I've tried this recipe but with 28°C water and let steep over an hour. For most medium roast Colombian coffees, two minutes fall short. Ethiopian coffees tend to produce lots of fines, so this may actually help with extraction but with other coffees I'd suggest going really really fine (Turkish) and stirr longer, steep longer. Otherwise under extraction is almost guaranteed!
@Aiki00055 жыл бұрын
I tried this before using multiple methods like putting the coffee and water into a shaker, shake it and fill it into the Aeropress or Alan Adlers method with water at 20°C. At this temperature you need more pressure than the paper filter can handle and it will burst. I also broke my Haroon server using this method. I'd go with 30-35°C water next time and use a sturdy glass.

i tried this recently, i had a fine espresso grind coffee, and i know it extracts fast, so, i wanted to try a fast cold brew, so i stirred for a while, although i didn't time it, i didn't think it was crucial, but likely for over a minute and under 2 min, under 3 for sure. the result was as i expected, still strong and fully brewed taste, but less bitterness. now i see here a similar method but with a precise timing, to which i think your mileage may vary, dark roasts, lighter roasts, very fine or coarse espresso grind will require some adjustments i reckon, but i was pleasantly surprised by how quick i was able to extract the coffee with room temp water. i did another cold brew experiment with the aeropress just leaving it in there for a longer period of time, without stirring, fine ground again, which would give a bitter nasty cold brew taste when done the traditional cold brew way, so i think i left it in there for 30-45 min and tried, came out good too, but the stir method was stronger and better overall.

I tried this method and it came out a little on the weak side, but absolutely delicious. So, on the second try, I stirred for 2 minutes and it came out stronger, and has a deeper flavor. My favorite method for brewing regular coffee is actually to use regular drip grind, 3oz water per tbs grounds. Then, I stir in boiling water. I put on the plunger to let it steep 3 minutes total including pressing time and it is a perfect black cup of coffee for me. This method with half the water over ice works great for your Japanese style cold brew where you just chill it immediately like the guy said here in the video.

I do cold brew with the Aeropress but I don't press it at all, I just let it drip through slowly. Use a small amount of water and when it's all dripped out, add more water. Adding the water in batches instead of all at once improves the extraction. It takes a couple of hours. Two minutes for cold brew is nuts, it simply isn't long enough for cold water to extract the flavours.

Why is it when you put the filter and water in, none of it drips into the cup, but when i do it, half of the water is in the cup by the time im even able to get a scoop of coffee grinds? The water just flows right through. Same happens even if I add the grinds first (they are fine as well)
@guitashamilele3 жыл бұрын
You always put the coffee in first, right? I have this problem of water dripping through usually. My advice is a) make sure the coffee evenly covers the filter so there are no gaps b) if using the regular hot water method, put the plunger into the top *immediately* after you pour in water to create a seal. Leave for 3 minutes. Then don't stir, just swirl the whole machine, then press down -- that's James Hoffman's recommended method. Haven't tried this with the cold brew method yet, but my guess is I'll need to do a), plus start stirring immediately. You could try the inverted method, although this is pretty dangerous with hot water.
@beardofnursing86022 жыл бұрын
I know this is old, but if you haven't tried the inverted method, it works a lot better. I have this problem of everything just leaking through before it brews, and the inverted method solves that. If you have a flat surface, have a good kettle that doesn't pour too fast, and are somewhat careful, it's really not dangerous. The only time I've gotten a little burned is from being an idiot and trying to pour hot water from a pot (didn't have a kettle) into the aeropress.

The reason why Mr Alan uses Ethiopian coffees for this recipe is because of the high amount of fines these coffee produce. But you could also compensate for this by combining grind sizes. For example you could try using 50/50 so that 50% of the coffee is grinded a couple clicks finer. Don't worry about over extraction: that's something hard to achieve with cold water and such short ratio. That being said, I tried using much cooler water but still hotter than ambient. I tried 60°C and stirred for a minute, inverted. At one minute I plunge down applying enough force to increase the pressure as much as possible to push the extraction a bit more. At the end just add up some hot bypass and tastes sweet!

When you insert the plunger, there is a little back pressure that keeps the coffee/liquid in the main chamber until your press. Give it a try!

What manual grinder are you using?
@EuropeanCoffeeTrip5 жыл бұрын
It is Comandante grinder, it is probably the best hand grinder you can get on the market at the moment. We were to the factory last month so expect a video soon!:)

I still prefer my method. Regular Aeropress inverted for two minutes using normal 95C water, then pressed over ice. Add water to taste.

You're using a paper filter for this recipe right?
@EuropeanCoffeeTrip5 жыл бұрын
Yes, a regular paper filter. I think you can use also metal filter but you may need to adjust the grind size. Not sure about that.

I just tried this. It seems to lack basic flavour that 24 hour cold has. But, in a pinch if you just want non acidic cold coffee quickly, it’s pretty good. Totally will try the inverted method next time though, it might make it stronger.

But what about with its caffeine content?
@SuperRand133 жыл бұрын
Not perfect, but i'll take this over waiting hours any day!

I’ve tried this method multiple times and it still tastes watery, even without diluting,nothing like the cold brew done the typical way . I’ve used ethiopian coffee, hand ground to fine, etc and nothing makes a difference. The hot brew method is delicious but the cold does not work

Brewing it with 80C water and pressing over ice isn't cold brew, but iced coffee.
@EuropeanCoffeeTrip5 ай бұрын
That’s right but that’s not the described recipe. We used it only in the second part of the video as a comparison 😉

Unfiltered water? How barbaric! :D I love 20g of Guatemala coffee, ground on setting #4 for porlex mini, inverted method, 30g 80°C water for blooming, another 30-70g water (depending on mood) at 30 second mark with 2-3 stirs, at 60 second mark I turn the aeropress upside down and finished product goes to the shaker with two small ice cubes for quick shake and you end up with a great foamy cold coffee. Not coldbrew, but cold one nonetheless.

yes i have a very similar method - spoon the instant Nescafe into a mug and pour boiling water on it.......

@@RuseMediaVideo ok, it doesn't sound like a similar method!!:)

Cold brew is so underestimated.... Really well brewed cold brew must be way way better than this method. But very interesting, I'll reach for my local cafe to see if they could try it
@EuropeanCoffeeTrip5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it can be true. This is not a perfect method and taste is in our opinion different that what you get in a more traditional setup.
@coffeewithbill78645 жыл бұрын
I think traditional steeping at room temp to cold chill at 12 to 24 hours is the best but I am interested in giving this method a try. I feel it may leave the cold brew under developed in taste and smoothness though.

I do not like cold coffee so will pass. For some odd reason I do like the cold brew nitro from my local coffee shop, Iron Coffee Co, Will stick with my inverted method which I just finished up about 10 minutes ago. The movie was great and was glad to be a sponsor!! Where do you go now with it??
@EuropeanCoffeeTrip5 жыл бұрын
We don’t like it very much either but this way of brewing is surprisingly good. That’s great you like the film! Thanks for the support. We had over 100 screenings around the world and still working and getting it to more people. We want to organize more screenings in the US and the UK.

I've just made one. It's good, but not terrific. I'll stick with my usual iced coffee recipe.

I'm a fan of traditional steeping of cold brew at room temp for 12 to 24 hours. The brew is so smooth. 2 minute cold brew seems like it would be under developed but I'm going to give this a try for sure!
@TheRareMusicArchiveCollection4 жыл бұрын
For me, it did not work. The water went through too quick to stir for 1 minute
@EuropeanCoffeeTrip4 жыл бұрын
If you can, grind it finer. That should help!
