Incredibly helpful video! I recently went through a house fire and much of the clothing I currently own was donated by vey kind souls trying to help me get back on my feet but a lot of pants don’t fit because they are either just a little too big or too small. It also didn’t help that I lost weight post fire so a lot of the clothes I purchased as replacements no longer fit either. This will help me alter the ones I’d very much like to keep! Thank you and keep up the good work!

Batter to sew, try on, THEN cut. Also, fit the waist and hips, THEN hem as the pants will fall differently and you risk making them too short. Your way is very brave!

Many comments here are noting that these are not professional alterations. I agree, they are not. However! These techniques would be great for when you are in a pinch, strapped for time, or are just beginning sewing and need a method that matches your current skills. I am a professional seamstress, and while I would not use these methods in a work/client setting, I can definitely see myself using them in an “at home” setting.

I so agree. I never understood why people have to complain for everything. Is free, no one is forcing you to watch it. Why take more of your time to complain or criticize in a non constructive way. I know how to sew well too, and I find this useful.

Yup. Who cares how these alterations are done if the results are the same or at least adequate looking (which these are) and functional. As long as the new seams give the fit you're after and have been serged to prevent fraying, what's the problem? It's the same with DIY haircutting videos. Some professionals just get butthurt because laypeople steal their thunder.

people would wear basically what looked like a dress on each leg... then back pockets that start at back of the knees. I had a more subtle, refined approach with my jncos but people got nutty. would be kinda cool to take a pair of huge kick wear or jncos and make them into skinny or slim fit jeans with the big embroidery still in tact.

It is better to put the pants on inside out so you can just sew them after pinning them and then cut the extra off after you get the right fit.

Hiya Liane, thank you for an intriguing tutorial with important methods to alter as necessary comfortably to clothing. Can you recommend another method for sealing the altered seams? I do not have an overlocker and truly cannot justify the expense of one. Appreciate your sharing your knowledge. Blessings.
@_LianaHardy
@_LianaHardy 4 жыл бұрын
That's a good question actually, there's other techniques such as a french seam, or sewing in a way in which can hide the raw edges. Another way could be to add bias binding to the edge and conceal using a fold over of it? But this in turn, can potentially create a bulky thick seam and be uncomfortable to wear... So I would highly recommend an overlocker machine if you don't like the bulky seam? You can find some sweet deals at Lincraft which are reasonable price and even at some thrift shops

Hiya Liana, thank you for replying so quickly. I will try your suggestions. As I was sorting out my waldrobe came across a pair jeand and tried on, but have increased in the seating area. Hehehe! So thanks to you will take the seams out along the legs, etc, then add fabric, same weight as jeans, then sew along with your tutorial. Ah! Suddenly realised could ask in the patchwork group I belong to if anyone has an "overlocker". Thank you very much, again, for sharing your knowledge. Blessings.

I have a pair of softshell pants which are super nice and warm fabric but the typical Chinese style with the front and back rise the same. That does not work for me and the front is very uncomfortable. How do you alter this ? Only the front rise so it will not come up much higher than in the back .. the back rise is perfect, hip width is perfect .. the waist is with elastic sewn together ..Would I need to cut below the elastic band and make the alterations there.. the bottom rise probably will not work because it will change the rest of the fit?

@_LianaHardy
@_LianaHardy 3 жыл бұрын
A possible way to approach the sewing to adjust the waist is to pin the side seams to the desired fit, otherwise you can also adjust/ reduce the centre back seam... As for the crotch, you may have to deconstruct/ unpick the centre crotch seam and back if it is too loose and re-cut- then sew the new crotch line

How do you deal with pants that have side pockets when altering from big to fit? Especially jeans? Thank you.
@_LianaHardy
@_LianaHardy 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Great question :) you may have to cut the side seam so this will also deduct the sides of the of the pocket- if you don't want to decrease the size of the pocket, leave it as it is and just make sure the sides of it match up to the new side seams of the pants in which you plan to reduce to make it fit you- and then sew them together. The thing with denim is that it can often get quite thick when sewing side seams together (what I've learnt from past exp) so be careful when you get to sewing this stage! Overclocking is also easier on denim which isn't too thick, otherwise another alternative to sealing off raw edges is to possibly do a French seam or bias bind the raw edges.... All the best, and I hope I was able to help you with your question

I bought some jogging pants (polyester/cotton mixed material) from a Gucci store last week. The waist is too big and the length is too long. The store manager said they can alter the pants for me for free. Should I trust them to do it? I’m worried the altering will damage the pants and make them not look original anymore. I don’t people to be able to tell that they’ve been altered either.

@@_LianaHardy I noticed you used a bunch of pins before you started cutting the pants with scissors. Do these pins damage the pants? Will you be able to notice small holes in the pants from the pins?
@_LianaHardy

The pins can leave marks depending on the fabric...it's not on all fabrics. But this is not always the case, also they're used as markers so quite often it'll mostly be covered by the sewing seams- this will hide any holes.

Supplies are sewing machine, overlocker, fabric scissors, clippers, and even buy some trims such as webbing to be added to the side seam.

Hello! Would the first tutorial work on a jeans jumpsuits also? But just for the legs
@_LianaHardy
@_LianaHardy 4 жыл бұрын
It might be able to work, but just be aware that some denim has stretch so it might not be able to take off as much excess as other denim. I personally also find the crotch area of jumpsuits quite fiddly as they often have excess space if sizing is big, so just be careful of this too! Hope it works out for you!!

Doing a flat felled seam on jeans will make them feel better on the inside, i.e., no seam allowance flapping against the skin.

Cool video. No disrespect but I have a question.... So for the jeans too big example, you removed the strong flat felled seams in the seat area it's needed and added a weak faux flat felled seam? That won't hold long at all. Curious why not pin the area, unpick the flat felled seam and remove what's needed while leaving enough for another flat felled seam and redoing the flat felled? You'd just strike your line from where you'd pin. Unpicking flat felled seam, measuring 1/2" from your lines and trimming, then re- flat felling properly. Just a little pressing and some pinning and some matched topstitching and you have a seam that'll last For woman's jeans that's the one area you don't want a weak seam.... Imaging that gave way in public.... For what you're doing and having people be able to do a true flat felled seam isn't too bad with some washable school glue to baste the seam before stitching.... It's a godsend for denim flat felled seams. Or some wonder tape or something.

@@_LianaHardy omg yes is a compliment. I'm sorry, I wasn't thinking that it could sound like an insult. It was genuinely a compliment. Size 8 isnt big, just saying that to me you look so skinny. More like a 2 or max. 4. Anyways you look good!

If you cut the leg off lengthwise where your pin is. You will cut through two layers of fabrics since you folded your pant leg upwards. Also it will be too short. That technique is wrong. Cutting along the pins through front and back is wrong too. Sorry but this leads to horrible mistakes and uneven legs that maybe also have turned seams because the fabric has been pulled forward while pinning.

question: on the zipper pants where you put elastic around the hemline, you cut right at where you want the desired length to be, don't you leave some room like 1/2 cm? And the cutted extra fabric, does it take part in creating the elastic gathered feature? or does it get thrown away?
@_LianaHardy
@_LianaHardy 4 жыл бұрын
It is optional up to personal preference, the extra 1/2cm can be seam allowance as well as additional length can also be for the folding up of the elastic gathered feature

I am making pants, below my butt, the leg is too baggy. How do I alter the pattern? thanks
@_LianaHardy
@_LianaHardy 5 жыл бұрын
If the leg is too baggy, my suggestion would be to take in the seam allowance on both left and right side seams of each leg... That way it makes it slimmer and more fitting. An example of this is shown in my techniques of this video here, feel free to watch my video to get some ideas on how to go about it. I hope you've found my advice helpful! :) All the best with your alterations!

I want to remove my back pockets on my Jean's.. make them smaller all around and then re-sew them back on for a more flattering butt. Because back butt pockets are always too big looking for my frame. What are your opinions of this and is it possible for you to try this and do a video of it? I'd like to do that with a white pair of stretch Jean's and a light green color because the pockets under are not darker.. although I may need to fade them out a little around the original pocket outline for a more natural look.

Hi Eva, I would reccomend following the steps I did with the blue flared jeans in my video, deducting excess space from the centre or if not, then deducting excess space from the side seams. And then after this, you may have to re size your back pocket patterns to be smaller to your desired size and then sewing it on top of the back jeans for attachment. I hope this made sense?

How to fix extra denim in the crotch area?
@_LianaHardy
@_LianaHardy 4 жыл бұрын
I would reccomended putting pins in place of where you want the cutting in the excess of the pants to fit to your crotch area. From there you can gauge the seam allowance and where to cut, and then sew accordingly... This would be my personal approach if I had excess fabric in the crotch area! Hope this helped!

So how do I fix a pair where the crotch is too big?
@_LianaHardy
@_LianaHardy 4 жыл бұрын
You may have to reshape and recut around the crotch curve .... First unpick and then reduce to the curve point in which feels comfortable fit to you. I'd reccomend wearing it first and placing a pin in place at where you want to alter to... Hope this helps! All the best
