Very interesting. I had never heard the term cabinet card. I have quite a few that I inherited. Some of them fold out, with picture in the middle. Any idea what years those were done?

I did not realized it but I think several of the funeral cards I have are actually cabinet cards, based on the material they are 'printed' on.

That's a really good question, and I'm not quite sure!

One suggested explanation is that these photographs were the first ones large enough to be displayed in a home, perhaps on a shelf or piece of furniture, such as a cabinet. I am not sure I am persuaded by this theory, but I have not found a better answer!

Cabinet cards are named for their ability to be displayed on the shelves of Victorian cabinets or sideboards
