Thanks for your videos, they are super helpful! I already have two masters (from the US) so I'm not very keen on starting from M1 (especially bc I don't test well), but in case it comes to that, how hard is it to go from M2 to a PhD? Is it reserved only for those with the top grades? Also have you heard of just PhD students taking over 3 years to complete their degree?
@beststudenttips2 жыл бұрын
Hello, thank you for your question. To answer your first question, it depends on where you want to apply. They should accept the equivalent of the M2 degree from the USA , if you have it. I guess you would need to check that with the administration of the university you would be affiliated with. Then, when it comes to grades, it is not common to need super high grades, as long as you could compensate lower GPA, by having some research experience in the field etc. If they have a threshold for grades, they should state it. So it depends mostly on how your profile fits the proposed project. Another way to get information about the grades, is you could get in touch with PhD students from the same program/lab and ask them if they needed certain GPA to get accepted. The second question, When it comes to doing it for more than 3 years, yes it is possible in two ways. You might get an extension that is one year long (as long as there are fundings for an extra year) or you might start working as an engineer/research assistant in the lab prior to officially starting the PhD. In that way you would already get some work done on the project, some results and so on, even before you start the 3-year long PhD. Hope this was useful 😊

@@beststudenttips thank you for the response! I found a project that sounds really interesting by going to the doctoral school website like you suggested in one of your videos. How much expectation is there as a first year PhD student (especially given your experience doing a PhD in a field slightly different from your master's)? I have an applied math MS but I want to apply to a physics PhD project (with an application in biology lol). In the small chance that I'm accepted, would they be expecting you to understand papers right away and to publish your own papers in your first year, or do group members and your advisor guide you with small projects and readings?
@beststudenttips2 жыл бұрын
@@mathieumaticien Great that you found an interesting project. From my experience, writing papers takes some time, it is very rare that someone has a paper already in the first year. If they do, they could have been working on the same project before, such as during their master studies/as a research assistant and continued for the PhD. And some doctoral schools, like mine, do not even ask you to publish papers in order to graduate. When it comes to being unfamiliar with the field of research, personally I believe if they accept you, it means you have enough background to handle the project. Now it depends on the supervisor, how much they would help or how fast they would expect you to start getting results.

@@beststudenttips thanks again for your comment, that puts me more at ease, and I think it would be a good idea to reach out to some of the grad students in the group as well. I did e-mail a bunch of professors whose website said to reach out about PhD projects, but I'm not getting any response from any of them :/ hopefully at least one of them replies at some point... Academia is such a rejection filled sport 😓
@beststudenttips2 жыл бұрын
@@mathieumaticien I’m glad to hear that. From my experience , sometimes they might reach out to you later if they don’t have a project to offer at the moment( I got some responses after few months). You can always resend an email if you’re in a hurry.

Thanks for the video. I checked how to apply for a PHD in france and the first website I get is campus france which lists different programs and doctorals schools. Or should I just google myself the universities and contact their doctoral schools directly on their university website? The application is more confusing than I thought. Also, on campus france they are saying that we need to apply for thesis subjects that have been published by French researchers, and not the other way around by writing our own phd research.
@beststudenttips Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question. For the first question, you can do both. The second question: yes , you first find a professor who would hire you and then you write a research proposal together. The most common way is the second meaning finding a professor first and then applying to a doctoral school. Note that I offer consultations for 1-1 help in finding a PhD.

I have a Masters degree in Law precisely law from a French speaking country. Can I get a direct admission to study PhD or I have to retake a masters program? And what procedure should I take to look for a university and apply ? Thank you

The best thing would be to email the student office. They should be able to confirm which master diplomas they accept! Good luck

Depends on the situation. I would advise to always contact directly. Except if the application is through the campus France
