Oral communication is CSU only, not UC. I mean you can take it and it should transfer UC, but it not one of those core requirements for UC.

You know what, I think you're right! I must have said that by accident. Oral communication does count to fulfill the "Other areas" that are also need for transfer though :) But you don't have to specifically fulfill it with that class.

Take Ws instead of Cs and lower. I got into all the UCs I applied to the first year I applied for transfer (UCLA, UCB, UCSD, Etc) with 6Ws. Long story short, I couldn't attend or defer admissions. I then reapplied to these same schools, and was readmitted to all of them. You need to have a reasonable reason why you have the Ws though. Ws aren't that bad at all. Like the video says don’t try to get too much. However, If anything they'll look more at grades. When these schools release their student profiles they release average GPAs for upcoming classes, not average Ws and etc. I transferred with a 3.9 though. Also, don’t worry to much about the Ws for grad school, as long as this isn’t repeated when you’re at the 4-year institution. I got into every grad school I applied to.

@@tyrellefrazier16 A lot of schools are not looking at SAT scores this year, plus no, if you got low scores in the SAT, that does not mean you are not smart... These tests need skills (you also have to pay for practice tests and keep practicing as much as you can). But I understand if you have a different passion then ok. All I am trying to say is Don't Give Up, because these test scores are not you. UCLA is not the only college in the USA, there are a lot of good colleges Tyrelle. Good Luck with whatever you chose.

For the engineer majors and natural science majors stressing about taking ALL of the IGETC classes plus the other requirements, it not necessary to actually take those classes if you are applying for an engineering major or natural sciences because the prerequisites are a very long and difficult list of classes so all you have to do is take the prereqs and two English classes and you're set.
@lesweetpea
@lesweetpea 7 жыл бұрын
You should have started that with 'if you're an engineering major'. But in general, I highly recommend finishing IGETC before a person transfers to a UC, 1. Because it's the classes are most likely going to be easier at your CC/other university 2. It costs more money to take them at a UC vs CC/you will have to spend more time at the UC trying to finish your GE's 3. Similar to the one before, some of my friends (esp STEM majors) that didn't finish IGETC might have spend an extra quarter here after graduation because of time spent finishing up GE's here..... Yes, it's not necessary, but it makes it sooo much easier to have them finished up before you get here. Then you can just focus on your major courses and upper division electives. And even if you're an engineering major, you still have to make sure you fulfill a lot of the GE requirements... especially if they accept you as undeclared or as an alternate major.
@akid8051
@akid8051 7 жыл бұрын
LeSweetpea Oh yeah, I forgot that classes are more expensive at UCLA than a CC, and they probably are easier at CCs as well. I guess I was just trying to calm the people worried about having to get so many good grades in so many difficult classes because they do give you wiggle room, at a higher price and more time.

LeSweetpea Thanks for replying btw! I was hoping I could ask you how an introverted person should apply to UCLA. I know they really want leaders and go getters, but I'd be lying if I say in my personal statement that I'm have that type of energy. I was going to say that a non academic reason I'm desperately hoping to get into UCLA is that being in a city environment will help me come out of my shell since I grew up in a very desolate area, at least of kids my age. Plus my parents were very strict on where or with who I can go places, so I was always a rather shy kid. Big thank you if you reply!
@lesweetpea
@lesweetpea 7 жыл бұрын
I'm studying right now, but I wanted to answer this in the best way that I can right now since I know it's time to apply right now (not sure if you're applying this season or not). In my personal statement I talked about being an only child and playing video games/being on the internet all time, among other things, but I said that to say that it taught me to be independent, stay productive, and taught me critical thinking. Then I went on to relate it to Japanese and Communications (my majors).Even if you're an introvert, if you want to talk about that, do that, and find the positive things about being an introvert. The most important thing, is not to be a go-getter necessarily, but to be memorable and evoke positive emotions from the reader. One of my friends said specifically, "Make it mushy" lol as in they'll feel like they know you or they'll feel emotion. They read so many essays and I'm sure it can be super boring to read similar things over and over. So make it personal and make it you. I was scared to talk about vlogging and video games, but that's me. Along with that, talk about yourself but also relate it to your major. And obviously, correct grammar errors, use decently good vocabulary, and have 2-5 people read it and give you corrections feedback. I think people's "problem" with personal statements, is that they don't make them personal. It needs to be personal. It shouldn't sound like a newpaper article or a novel. It should sound like a super well-written diary about your life. Also, yeah UCLA is in a city environment but there's hundreds of other school in California/US that are as well. So yeah it's in Los Angeles, but it's not that unique that it's in a city!~ It's just in a really cool city! Haha You will have fun where ever you end up! :) Good luck Lastly, look up videos about writing personal statements! And try to find ones from admissions officers about what they want to hear!

This video is so helpful thank you! When you were at your cc were you in the academic honors program, or TAP, or TAG? Also, do you think getting your AA made your chances of getting into ucla higher?
@lesweetpea
@lesweetpea 7 жыл бұрын
I was not in the academic honors program, although I was qualified to be (I just didn't have enough time to take enough honors classes to be considered to be in the program). However, I was in the honor society at my school (Alpha Gamma Sigma) which I heard was a really good organization for universities since it has a lot to do with volunteering. (Universities like to see that you are diverse) I was not able to do TAP, I think I missed the application date. And for TAG I believe they didn't do UCLA or Berkeley, so I wasn't too interested in it/probably missed the deadline/don't remember. I don't know if an AA really does anything. There are a number of things that go into the application process, but it can only be looked at as a positive thing. So yeah!

On an average base how long does it take to transfer ? How come it took you 3yers?
@lesweetpea
@lesweetpea 7 жыл бұрын
Because I changed my major. And because I wanted to get better grades rather than take 4 classes at a time. Cause I do better when I take less classes at a time. Also, I wanted summer breaks so I didn't take summer classes. On average it takes 2-4 years and up to 6 years to transfer I don't know the exact stats but most people don't transfer in 2 years because they didn't plan it in a way that allowed them to finish it 2 years. It's up to the person.

I'm thinking about transfering to UCLA my junior year but I also learned that you can appeal a decision? I heard appealing a decision is not good on my record? is that true? should I appeal my UCLA decision or just go to UCSD and transfer later? UCLA is my dream school because it is the only UC that has a legitimate and the best film school.

I have a question I'm about to enter a community college, in high school I dealt with medical issues so my high school GPA is not really good, so when applying to a UC more specifically UCSB how much do they look at your high school transcript or do they look at it at all. btw I'm attending a NYC community college so I will hopefully be transferring from out of state how much of a different will that make

Tomas Amador They don't look at high school GPA at all! Once you start taking college classes you're considered a college student so they don't look at high school! So you took 3 classes at a time? Isn’t it frowned on by the universities to be under full time 12 units?
@lesweetpea
@lesweetpea 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. (to your first question.) I occasionally did 4 classes, but normally I took 3 at a time. There’s no rule book that says “You MUST be full time,” and no one frowned at me, lol. It’s a personal choice. I had a job and commuted 1+ hour to school one way, so taking 4 classes would have been difficult for my schedule. In the eyes of UCLA, Berkeley etc. it’s definitely more important to have a higher GPA, then to try to rush through all of your classes (if that matters at all). No counselor, transfer-education faculty member, etc. has ever given advice that taking 3 classes vs. 4. classes would affect me in a negative way or at all in terms of transferring to a 4-year university. In general, from my experience at UCLA, I had transfer friends that spent 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, and even other combinations such as taking a 2-year gap year after high school and then taking 3 years in CC and entered UCLA at 24-30 years old depending on their situation. So I honestly think it’s more of a myth. I’ve never heard any official person or counselor tell me I needed to take 4 classes at a time in order to ~~~ idk? I’m not sure what that would have accomplished aside from stressing me out & lowering my GPA. So in short - what’s most important is your GPA and having a valid reason for why it took however long it did to transfer. Whether it’s working, self-discovery, family issues, exploring different majors etc. The people who read and evaluate our applications are real people. They can understand if you were working a part-time job or had to help out at home for a year, had a child etc. and decided to do 2 classes or 3 classes a quarter. What’s important is explaining the years post-high school that lead up to your application and having a high GPA among other things that going into having a good application. Hope this answers your question! Another thing, at UCLA 3 classes is full-time and taking under 3 classes would effect more things such as financial aid and your graduation plan at a 4-year university, so I’m only talking about community colleges in my answer above. 😊

@@lesweetpea Thanks so much for your insight into this. I appreciate it. My daughter graduated high school 2 years early...end of 10th grade and went right to a ca community college. She is in her 3rd year now. She actually applied to USC last year ( only USC) with a 4.0 gpa, working 35 hours a week, and all their particular GE requirements met , and they rejected her specifically for being under full time for 2 of her 4 semesters .....9 units ( 3 classes) ....instead They list it in their FAQs as an issue.....for them. My daughter didn't have the 60 units at that time to transfer to the UC's and CSU schools ( USC doesn't require 60 units) which is why she only applied to USC. So she has just continued on at her community college and is technically finished as of last month . AA degree and IGETC and major prereqs all completed fall semester. But felt nervous due to USCs stand on the "under full time" thing so to be safe is taking 4 classes now for spring. Still has a 4.0 and is hoping to be accepted to UCLA or Berkeley. Fingers crossed. But she is annoyed taking 4 classes she doesn't need just to " be full time" with 12 units. Although since you can take 70 units with you when you transfer and she has 64 currently.....2 of the classes aren't a waste since the units will transfer and she will go in with 70. The remaining 6 units won't be able to transferred since it would put her at 76. She would have liked to have traveled this semester or done a full time internship perhaps but isn't going to .....just going to do the classes. I do actually think you are correct and the UCs don't care and as long as you let them know what you are doing with your time its all good. My daughter just doesn't want to risk it due to her USC experience. Thanks again....your channel is great!

I see your situation! Yeah, it seems like USC has different rules since they are a private. They can make up any rules they want. I can only speak from my experience getting accepted to the 4 UC’s I applied to and the 3 CSU’s. On the UC/CSU she should be fine! Impacted majors are what make it difficult sometimes though. Good luck!

Hi!! I was just wondering if you had to be at a certain level of Japanese to be able to transfer as a Japanese major?
@lesweetpea
@lesweetpea 7 жыл бұрын
Grace Lee I think you need to at least be able to score into Japanese 4 at UCLA. If you scored lower, it'd be a hassle/rush to finish all of your language courses and you'd have to take some summer classes to catch up. It just depends where you score, but I'm sure a counselor could help you figure it out~ you just might have to take more classes

LeSweetPea I am in a little pickle about my current college situation. So I am a senior right now (graduating this year) in high school and I applied to a bunch of schools. I got into UCLA, UC Berkeley, UChicago, etc. But the little ambitious senior in me applied ED to the University of Chicago so that is where I will be attending in the fall of 2017. However, after some thinking I kind of regret not being able to go to UCLA this fall, so I think I might try to transfer next year. Did you say that we apply during the regular application dates? Also, is the transfer application different than the normal application? Last question, will me already being accepted to UCLA hurt my chances of getting in again? will my chances be better? Thank you. lol sorry for such a long comment.
@lesweetpea
@lesweetpea 7 жыл бұрын
If I were you, I'd try to get out of the ED and say that I can't afford UChicago... or something.. ED's are apparently really binding... but yeah I'd try to get out of it Hmm transferring from another university is tricky after your first year.. typically you have to transfer after your 2nd year and come in as a 3rd year... unless you have enough credits/units to be a 3rd year after your 1st year.. Transfers & freshman apply at the same time and it's pretty much the same application.. you just check the box for transfer. And I don't think already being accepted would hurt your chances, but I'm not an admissions officer so I don't know if it will be better, worse or neutral. You should check out all three of the schools and tell UChicago that they didn't give you enough financial aid or something if you end up not wanting to go there... I'm not sure what they can actually do if you don't attend

Anetta Matushevich its not just you even in the east coast in America we don't call it units its weird man I know whats she talking about credit's but that the first time I heard someone call it units.
@lesweetpea
@lesweetpea 8 жыл бұрын
+Anetta Matushevich A unit is how much a class is worth! So one class at a community college or any school that's on the semester system is typically worth 3 units! And you need 60 units to finish at a community college so that tells you that you need to take around 20 classes to transfer to a UC(UCLA)! Because 3 units x 20 classes = 60 units. For a 4 year university you need 120 to graduate At UCLA, we are on the quarter system(which is a little different) so each class is typically worth 4 units and we need 180 units to graduate! I hope this makes sense!

I personally have seen many international students do this so that they can get accepted to UCLA or Berkeley. Many international students went to Santa Monica Community College. I'd suggest you apply to UCLA during your senior in high school, and if you do not get accepted then go to Santa Monica College. Community College is also a LOT cheaper so it's definitely a great option that many people chose to do. I was in Community College for 3 years, but it's definitely possible to finish in 2 years!
