Magic eraser tip is helpful!

Someone recently suggested cleaning the Flux with baking soda and Dawn dish soap then adding a pinch of salt to the patina...I was playing around in a piece I'm not in love with so I figured I'd give it a try.... omg! It really comes out almost like a line of black paint! So beautiful!

Awesome!! I'll have to try that method sometime too!
@4Brandy46 ай бұрын
I saw a video where ArtyRv did that. It looked like his came out more of an aged patina. I’ll have to try it on something I’m not in love with too.

That is the best looking black patina I have ever seen! It really turned out great!

Your foiling is perfect and so follows your solder lines! Do you use a foiler to help or do you foil with just your hands? Thank you for your tutorials ! I can only aspire to be as good! ❤
@SamanthaAshleyGlass Жыл бұрын
Oh thank you so much! I just foil by hand, making sure to center the foil. I tried using a hand foiler once, but my pieces are usually too small.

I wish my solder runs were as nice as yours. Mine usually look I did them during an earthquake
@SamanthaAshleyGlass2 жыл бұрын
Hey now, maybe the "earthquake" look can be a new trend! Joking aside, thank you for the compliment. I don't know how long you've been soldering - it just takes a lot of practice, but honestly, as long as your piece is strong and sturdy, "perfect" lines aren't a necessity (that's the beauty of black patina - hide any flaws!)

What is the reason for the rinse with distilled water, is there a chemical reaction with normal tap water (which can be hard)?
@SamanthaAshleyGlass9 ай бұрын
SO sometimes we need to experiment with different processes, because some people's tap water has minerals that can affect the chemical reaction of the patina and solder. Most people see issues with their tap water when using copper patina, more than with black patina

What is quick clean? Beautiful work!
@SamanthaAshleyGlass2 жыл бұрын
Kwik clean is a flux neutralizer and patina cleaner that you can use on it's own without rinsing with water. I don't always use it though, sometimes I just rinse off the patina in super cold water.
@Snowisper2 жыл бұрын
This method looks a lot "cleaner" compared to the steel wool and the mess it leaves behind! What was that you sprayed, you said "dawn" as in dawn the antibacterial soap? Did you dilute it with water? I didnt know dawn came in a spray!
@SamanthaAshleyGlass2 жыл бұрын
Yes! My main thing was wanting to find a method that didn't include steel wool. (technically you can just clean your piece and immediately apply patina, but using an abrasive, like magic eraser, before patina gives it a more even application). I used Dawn Powerwash. I saw it at the store and thought "that looks like it'll clean really well." 🤣 I sprayed it on the piece, then scrubbed with a damp magic eraser.

is that cold blue you use too oxidize the solder?

I'm using novacan black patina for solder

Do you prefer this method or the one in the previous video? Which gives the blackest?
@SamanthaAshleyGlass Жыл бұрын
as much as I hate steel wool, I think a fast, light scrubbing yields the blackest/most uniform black patina. Another thing I've started doing since these videos (I'm always looking for ways to improve the patina process) is after steel wool, and before patina, I clean the solder lines once more with either isopropyl alcohol or kwik clean.

Still comes out dark brown!
@SamanthaAshleyGlass9 ай бұрын
You might have to experiment with a couple different cleaning methods. Your water may be causing the brown color. Right before applying patina, try wiping your solder with Kwik clean, or isopropyl alcohol. You can also redo your patina, by steel wooling with 0000 steel wool, and reapplying the patina
