I like the "respond with curiosity." "That's interesting, why would you say that? That's interesting, why would you do that?" Could you possibly flesh out this into a story about a narcissist? Can you turn this into a story, or a short film with someone playing the role of the narcissist? I would like to see how the narcissist acts, and then how you are responding. It's good advice, but it would be great to see it in action, in the form of a short film/video. It helps to see the whole context. Thanks so much.

I would say argue from emotion is the most common. Premis, premis, conclusion If they disagree with it on a basis of emotion things can only go downhill from there. If you know the person, back off and wait for a situation and explain why your conclusion is logic in nature, not emotional. I cant argue with my family, example: - 5+5=10 Counter argument: *angry mumbling while walking away* If i have done something wrong I WILL HEAR IT from others If i tell others they have done something wrong I just: *need to stop being petty and forgive others*?

You know, to do something like this, be an "outsider" in this situation, when the narcissist is your parent or close family is almost impossible. I have grown up with 2 narc parents and they basically poisoned me with every words they've said. Now, I broke all contact with my mother, when I was 20 but not with my father, it took more time for me to realize, he is a covert narcissist. He used to ridicule me a lot even in front of me or behind my back and I've got some confidence back, when I moved away from him but now I'm in a situation, where I have to stay in his house and he sucks all of the energy from me. I drew my line, so now he is worse than ever and always lying about me for everybody, who is willing to listen him. In this case I realized, I have to be cool and emotionless but still he pulls me to arguments sometimes and I always feel weak and powerless against him. He is very illogical but never listen to facts and I feel like, there is no way to defend myself either from him or from other family members, who trust him.

I had a similar experience with my family. The only way to stop getting pulled in is to truly stop caring what they think of you and what they say about you. This is NOT easy. They want to control your self-esteem along with everything else. But at the heart of it they want to keep you feeling bad about yourself. This feeds their superiority complex/narcissism. Every way you can start to love yourself, care about yourself, put you first and realize they have no idea who you are and your worth as a person. They say they do, but they don't. They don't even know their own worth as a human being, even though they act and pretend like they know best. Truly they don't know crap lol and are lost souls. Don't let lost souls tell you who you are. This is what I wish I could tell my younger self. It's been about 10 years since I finally got out of their emotional/mental grasp. Their guilt trips don't work anymore. Their judgments don't work. After a while they stopped all their games because when they tried to guilt me I would literally chuckle and walk away. Be careful though, that could be dangerous with someone who is a highly malignant narcissist. Maybe keep the chuckle inside your mind. Because that is what occurs when you see that they are nothing more than their mental games. It's called Emotional Blackmail. There's a book on it. I l also want to get Slay the Narc book because honestly these people are everywhere in our society and we need to up our game, especially when we had parents who groomed us to be compliant. Good luck to you.

And by the way, the biggest thing that reeled me back into fights with them is that they would point out a weakness in me or something I was still building inside myself. And you'll see that and think they are right. You'll want to defend yourself because it hurts. The thing is many of your so called weaknesses come from their bad parenting and narcissism that you endured. This is not to put blame on them, but just to recognize some of the truth in that so you don't blame yourself or take on any more shame than you already have. The shame cycle keeps us paralyzed in life too often. Or having trouble concentrating and other things from growing up in an unsupportive, actively shaming household. So don't absorb those insults and hopefully don't get stuck in blaming them either because that could slow you down as well. Just recognize the reality of the whole situation and then do your best to heal. Sorry for the long comment. I just saw your story and it hit me hard because it's sounds just like mine.

don't engage in those arguments, let him say what he wants to say. You know the truth. Then later vent to your friends. Spend as much time as you can away from home and be there only when you need to be. Use the "you know dad, I'm tired we can talk about this later" technique.

I think it is more like a cunning manipulative strategy designed to confuse you and making them having the upper hand. Like they are validating them. Instead focus on their needs and wants. For example the purpose of them talking illogical is to get everything on their side, just state that is what you desire the most.

Hi Rebecca, could you address a situation where the Narcissist communicates only through text and asks only rigid yes or no questions? Attempts to initiate or shift the conversation outside of these narrow parameters (ie: ask questions/ask for clarification/explore other options etc) results in the narc aggressively stonewalling or firing back with toxic ultimatums. Any thoughts?

Good thing I don't have a boss. I mediated my own custody hearing without an issue. Anyone so illogical as to have me shut down on them, has no self control at all. No one is worth that amount of conflict. It's like trying to reason with Tommy Shelby while he is screaming and attacking people. There is so much damage to others, due to their lack of self-possession. I don't respect irrational people. Damaging others out of a personal vendetta, shows exactly how untrustworthy a person is. There's no winning with people like that. Particularly when they make inappropriate comments on people you are dating, including getting into their home security cameras and watching them masturbating. This is sick. I've cut all contact and this adult sized child is still committing dv.

FYI, cognitive “logic” and “emotional logic” have very different rules. They work nothing alike. And also calling either logic is also wrong as it’s mainly rationalization and if you feel negative you have negative cognitions, if you feel positive and safe you have open and broader cognitions. It’s the emotions that dictate the logic as what has a bigger effect on our cognition is the parts of the brain that evolved first
