I have only just discovered your channel. I would like to say that you are a wonderful teacher. You make everything simple to understand. Thank you so much. I have only watched a few of your videos so far, yet I have learnt so much already. Things that I used to find confusing have been broken down and made very understandable. 👍 I wish my French teachers at school many years ago had come to you for lessons in how to teach your beautiful language!

I managed to gloss "qu'est-ce que c'est?" The word structure is very similar to "what is it that this is?" This is in reference to the fact that "que" tends to mean "what" in other Romance languages, with which French shares a history.

@ 1:31- "Do not try to translate it word-for-word. It will not work." I don't agree. The question ("Qu'est-ce que c'est?") translates word-for-word to "What is-it that it is?" Is that wrong? What's impossible with that? Many 2nd language learners (and 3rd, 4th, 5th...) approach language initially from an academic perspective, from the perspective of their own language, and need to know what each individual word means, whether they are utterly straightforward together, or not.

Hello Virginie! Great video but i have a question: In the example number 5, you said " ou sont mes cles de voiture". In this case the correct question wouldn't be "ou sont mes cles DE LA voiture"? Thank you.
@FrenchTrulyTV
@FrenchTrulyTV 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching the video :-) the correct sentence is definitely Où sont mes clés de voiture, that's how you say car keys. I guess it could have been singular though: Où est ma clé de voiture?
@bryanu1737
@bryanu1737 5 жыл бұрын
De la voiture mean "key of the car" and just de is (par exemple: cle de voiture) just Car keys

Generally we learn that one can only invert with a pronoun; we can ask "Vient-il?" but not "Vient Gérard?" But I don't kow how to explain your example "Combien coûte le manteau?" Or "Combien gagne Philippe?", or "Avec qui sort Lucie?", or "Comment vont les enfants?" (Doesn't seem to work with "Pourquoi" though.)
