It is not the resume. It is when you have a Zoom interview, and the person who is interviewing you is between the ages of 26 to 40 years old and looks at you as if they have seen a ghost or deer in the headlights. It can be very discouraging.

I'm so sorry you're going through that :( I know this might seem unfair, but the way we present ourselves physically can sometimes alleviate those reactions a bit.

Yes, at my former job, they very intentionally created a toxic environment to age people out. Treated specific people horribly to get us to leave. Passive aggression, lies, gaslighting, poor annual reviews (more lies), added very unrealistic expectations. I loved my job and my co-workers, so I stuck it out in misery for WAY TOO LONG, but eventually, I had to save myself from an abusive employer and start over when I was officially in the ageism bracket. Part of the challenge with starting over now is that I was there for 20 years. If I don't get a new job soon and/or it doesn't work out, it will be hard to hide that 20-year experience max on my resume. What do I do then?

I've been experiencing ageism for 15 years. I went back mto college in my 40's and got a medical degree; I had great references from physicians I had worked with prior to my going back to college and letters of recommendation from instructors. I've left dates of previous jobs out of my resume and cover letters, but the reality is the applications ask your date of birth and want job dates.

I removed age on resume and got the interview and the first thing they asked me was when I graduated. I didn't get the job of course.

Thanks for making this video. I definitely fall into the older adult. I have faced ageism in my experience. I now feel I have some foundation info to help my job search.

I’m trying to get a job as an account executive. My sales experience was 25-30 years ago. I am currently a self employed handyman. How can I use that experience or should I just avoid bringing it up.

Perhaps under an “Interests” section, yoga, vegetarian, etc could be included on resume.

It definitely is hard to know. Hopefully this video helped though. What kinds of reactions have you seen that make you feel like that?

Yes, I believe I have experienced ageism. Of course, they can never give THAT as the reason. I have used all your tips in my resume and cover letter and am getting interviews. I dye my beard before interviews now because I am self-conscious about the 'salt and pepper' look on camera. Perhaps I need to go clean-shaven. 🤔

May require more sick/personal leave May be out of touch with trends May not connect with younger colleagues These are horrible stereotypes. What can be done to eradicate them from the job search process?
@DigitalBrooke4 ай бұрын
I know we need to get rid of experience that’s over 20 years old, but what if that information still applies today. For example, I was the digital Director at a major TV corporation and a lot of my changes and techniques and strategies still apply today even though the digital world has changed so much. as a quick example, SEO And the scientific studies done on eye scanning, and headline writing, and I have significant quantifiable metrics to support these. So still leave it off?

It all boils down to just that one person that is doing the interviewing. If that interviewer looks at older people with preconceived notions, than that's it. It's a done deal. This needs to end now. The way to end ageism in the work place is to do what Affirmative Action did for African Americans - to prove the number of older people that are working for each company. This needs to happen now! When the world starts seeing the statistics with their own eyes, they'll see just how ageist we all are. We need to start proving ageism with cold hard facts, so that they have no choice but to hire us if we are qualified.

Sorry, I cannot just get rid of valid experience just because it’s “old”. However! I can place it in the “additional” category or categories. Cheers.

Yes, most certainly. And also racism and, in a couple instances, open racism when the hiring manager came out and says because I am of the wrong nationality, they could not hire me for a Canadian government job. Is it still expected that only 20% of the jobs ever get posted and that most jobs are still unadvertised and gotten through a network, or who do you know? Vegetarians aren't healthy; in fact, in 1930, doctors knew that Carbohydrate consumption would lead to diabetes and heart disease. It was just a matter of when. So, hiring would be more interesting if a person was a carnivore because this was humanity's diet for 2.5 million years and resulted in the most outstanding advancements in technology of our time.
