With bow drill I'm with you, you can bear down on it & burn through the burnishing but for hand I still like to add some dirt or sand. You don't have the mechanical advantage with just your hands 😄👍

When I have hand drill glazing, I start over with a new divot.

I'm currently drying out a 30 inch mullen stalk to use as my hand starter spindle and I have a very old, dry, ceder clapboad for it's base...in N.H. bee have Mullen Stalk has hard exterior, and like a punk wood interior..I used a friend's yrs ago..nice video..

Too much friction at bearing block not enough at fire board. See the tutorials in my bow drill playlist.
