Love these alternatives!! Another alternative I like for 'very poor' is 'penniless' and I think it's quite an easy one to remember, i.e. someone without even a penny to spend.

Hello there Ma'am! I'm an English teacher by profession and I really like to pump up my speaking skills and vocabulary and always encourage my students to do the same.. I think you're a great teacher yourself, and I could just go on listening to you, without getting bored! I totally agree with you that "very" good English isn't good English at all... Thank you for the vast array of colourful words you've made use of to replace "very" , a redundant word which actually doesn't help. Thanks so much really, I enjoyed hearing you explain these things so lucidly, in a fun way. Hope to see and hear more from you.
