Decided that my “midlife crisis” is to go backpacking (with my husband) next year when I turn 40! I’ve always loved hiking and camping… just never tried backpacking. Starting with a local, state park trail that’s just 5 miles in, camp, 6 miles back. Baby steps!! 😅 thanks for the tips!

My husband and I have watched several of your reviews and found this particular video helpful. We fall into the category of; done a lot of camping, a lot of hiking, and a lot of Mtb biking but never backpacked or bike packed. After much research, We have stated purchasing the gear. My biggest fear is weather / nature related. How to be prepared for the unexpected. How to determine when to shelter or when to keep moving.

Eric, a big shout out, thank you for your vids. I admire the way you break things down making it easier to understand, what I do and or don't really need, and pointing out how to make things happen with what you already have versus just pedaling the name brand items, and to just get things started don't go overboard and burn out.

hi eric🌷 I “LIKED” on this vid when I 1st watched it, many, many, etc.. U & Dan we’re right here in my backpack on the Centennial trail, SD. I live right near the Northern terminus Bear Butte Mountain ⛰ I live almost downtown Sturgis, & they moved us in the middle of the 75th Motorcycle 🏍 Rally !, Buddy wasn’t real happy about it! I watch you all the time!, I like ur demeanor! Helping the beginners. I been an outside person my whole life, been camping since I was a baby, took my kids too! Camping was the only thing I cud really afford, once u have ur basic gear ! Idk how ?, but I didn’t know backpacking even existed in my world, Finally, now that I’m old, broke, & VERY Broken!!! I’m gonna be backpacking in Yellowstone & Grand Tetons backcountry w/my little service dog Buddy 🐾 had him the day he turned 8wks., he’ll be 13 yrs on July 4th, which he HATES ! ( no boom-booms!!) We , He led us on centennial trail 3days last fall. Last spring we went on our 1st bikepacking trip! From past Custer to home in Sturgis, 76mi., absolutely beautiful! But I wudnt do it again! No route for no bicycle!!!! Scary coming round blind mountains w/trucks & NO SHOULDER! I wudda felt safer on the friggin Interstate !!! 🛣 Buddy was cool w/it but I think I prefer more rail trail or singletrack! Buddy’s gonna Race w/me! I wear him in front like a baby front facing backpack. But during Covid I saved up & acquired a lot of neat backpacking gear! So Also we got thrown around groomers and even tipped!, they did not do all their job!!!, & did Not Say! So when I took him to the Vet , I was told 1yr TOPS!? 😢 Buddy has a mass/growth on one of his anal glands! I’m praying he stays w/me longer ! w/o being in any pain or discomfort!!!! He seems to be doing very well! So we’re going on our bucket list trip together!, we’re gonna Do 25KLOOP MTB Race in West Yellowstone, then 3 CGs , Yell, Gran Tet, Gros Ventre CG, front country, ⛰ 🦌 THEN 2 diff BP Overnight hikes in Grand Tetons back, backcountry, I Never did this before so its hard to do something, you don’t know how to do!? I tried to acquire the proper maps for my specific trails being done. I found both on my all trails map app , but didn’t get sent the right ones from amazon, decent general maps of trail in yell, G.T. , but not the ones I was looking for! So I have little to no experience with the planning part cuz I have no friggin clue what I’m doing!! Ranger Nicolas from G.T., was very helpful !, but I still feel I need to know More. I tore out the back seats of my car and made a mini car camper! 🚙 goes right thru to the trunk so I can sleep INSIDE the car @ CG’s ! People so careless w/food , then crawl up in their $250,000 hard shell camper! I’m praying 🙏 that Old Car holds out for us cuz IF the car 🚙 DIES ON ME/US it Then becomes a bikepacking trip! 🐻🐺🦊🧸🚴🏼‍♂️🏕🎒 So I gotta be REALLY PREPARED! I already got my resupply boxes 📦 pre-addressed to 1st & 3rd CG’s, send backpacking gear to Jenny Lake visitors center & when Done ✅ Stuff Bike in box, put box & Buddy on 🚎 bus home. 🏡 PLAN B - Bikepacking, then 2 diff Backpacking trips , then RUN HOME TO CATCH BUS 🚎 BACK TO S FALLS for DR.Appt. ! Wow 😯 🥾🧢🕶🧤🌂🍹 If you can help me more I wud Greatly appreciate your time and patience. You look pretty busy busy 🐝 too!!! I’m here if u have the time to help me!? ~ ~thx 💕 ps. Buddy is too cute!, too Smart, & too Good, rides the bus 🚎 w/me once/mo., EVERY MO., & you’ld NEVER KNOW HE’s THERE !!! If you get back to me I’ll send a pic! Absolutely adorable and DEFINITELY IRREPLACEABLE!!!! Argh...😢. So SAD!!! He’s a Great little backpacker , too little for his own! He brought me a tiny empty water bottle, like he wanted more , for me to FIX IT, when Daddy knew better & cameled up our coffee and dinner next day! HE KNOWS BETTER NOW! ? Knumbnutts wudnt listen, musta wanted to learn the hard way!?? ( our water supply !💦 ) Anyway SO EXCITED!!! I’m praying 🙏 BUDDY keeps doing well!! We R getting HAMMERED rt now!!! 🥶BAD IN SD!!! It’s Sat nite, my bus on mon, dr appt tue, 400mi away & looks like Rapid city will still b ICED/SNOWED BLOCKED IN!!!!!! Looks like gonna Storm thru Sunday , & city under ice, snow ❄️ & my ride is on mon morning???? Idk 😐bout that!? Ttyl ~kind regards Cheryl & Buddy 😊🐾

I went on a 2 day hike in Maine (baxter state park) and did approx 11 miles a day with 4300ft of elevation. it was hell and almost put me off of hiking completely, but it was so life changing, i never knew that hiking was something I loved(even though it was a living hel). That’s exactly where I’m at now. My family and I just recently moved to South Dakota where hiking options are far more that we had before… but I’m new to this and don’t know anyone in this scene yet. I have most of what I need, my only hold up is lack of present help.

It is definitely more fun, at times, going with others, but I've come to learn the fulfilling joy of going it alone. I can go at my own pace, stop where I want, and just really let my mind be free. I also am from South Dakota and am really looking forward to my first overnight trip. Up to now just day hikes. I'm envious of everyone that has places to do this our their backdoor. Unfortunately I have to travel quite a way to get into these areas. Still, I'm looking forward to hopefully having a couple of longer weekends this fall to do this before I attempt my first thru hike next year.

I have been camping, hiking, and backpacking since childhood, and I'm 63 now. Because wild camping is illegal in most of England, where I currently live, and I am a law-abiding person, I restrict my adventures these days to less ambitious outings like day hikes. Hello! I went on my first backpacking trip this past spring and LOVED IT! It was a simple 1 nighter, roughly 15-mile round trip in South Florida. Now I really I want to do a trip in the mountains next spring! My problem is that I am not yet comfortable to go on my own and it is challenging to get my few backpacking friends to go for a long road trip due to their obligations. Do you know of any affordable guided backpacking trips? Or a backpacking group? I know REI offers some, but $1000+ in addition to travel costs is a bit out of the budget. Thank you!

A general rule of thumb is to not carry more than 20% of your body weight. But other factors are how many miles you hiking, at what elevation, and how much elevation gain and loss are you doing. Don't try to do too many miles at first. See how your body reacts and add more miles in later.

Tiny additions: 1. Don’t just tell someone where you’ll be hiking. Tell them the exact trail route you’re planning to do. 2. Consider a loop hike for the first hike. It means you can drive to the trailhead and leave from that trailhead. Logistics one less thing to worry about.

I understand the reason why you should let others know where you are planning on going to hike and for how long, but to me it defeats the purpose of being outdoors. I want to disappear from society each time I go on a trip and having people know my location, even though they are family, makes me feel too limited. I want the freedom to diverge from my "planned" route by miles and days at a whim and I don't want my family to know so that way they never even need to be worried when I don't call them because I haven't had reception in over 2 weeks. Besides I'd rather die in nature than live in cities.

I'm planning on hiking part of the Appalachian Trail starting in Harpers Ferry and going south on the AT for at least 5 days altogether 10 days and this will be my first time hiking that long alone but I can't wait I think it's going to be absolutely fun because I love the outdoors 🏕⛰

@@thomasfinley7754 I actually was on the Appalachian trail a year and a half I go but I ended up having to leave it early because I ended up getting sick and found out that my appendix was infected inside of me and had it removed but I'm planning on going back to the Appalachian trail next year hopefully and going to start hiking south on the Appalachian trail like I said in my last comment that I posted two year ago but to answer your other question if I am close by to Harpers ferry area I am in Ohio so no I'm not too close about 6 hours drive

great beginner bag that you can get cheap and will be solid is the US surplus ALICE ruck. Got mine at a garage sale for like 30 bucks and has served me well. The common medium pack you'll see is about 40 L which is fine for weekend trips.

When I travel to Thailand I usually rent I place for an entire month. If I want to go from city to city should I book All the accommodations before leaving home or book the first place and wing it from there?

I am heading out on my first one nighter this weekend. Biggest fear is getting over taste of filtered water. I tested my sawyer this past weekend on some river water (I live in SE Texas) and the taste wasn't terrible but made me gag lol. I bought some mio lemonade to mask the taste but I am still paranoid that it will make me feel sick.

The taste of the water shouldn't be that bad! It probably means the source water isn't great to start with. Mio or Chrystal light is great at masking bad tasting water.

If possible, use smaller water sources, ideally well-flowing, rather than stagnant. The smaller the water source, usually the closer to the original source, whereas a river will often have road runoff, agricultural runoff, and whatever else has made its way there. I used to take Koolaid on the trail back in the 90s because of flavor. Using a water bottle over a bladder for flavoring is usually a good idea, since bladder will pick up whatever flavor you've added.

I have been camping, hiking, and backpacking since childhood, and I'm 63 now. Because wild camping is illegal in most of England, where I currently live, and I am a law-abiding person, I restrict my adventures these days to less ambitious outings like day hikes. I loved your advice about calling ahead and getting a heads up on local regulations. Good to see yo on Dan Becker's channel, too.

This is a very good point. Especially about car camping (or trying it out with lower risk). As for cotton, I agree with you. But this is directed at people who want to use cotton underwear/socks/hoodies/ etc who just wear clothing they have that feels warm and cozy around the house and don't know better.

Eric, a big shout out, thank you for your vids. I admire the way you break things down making it easier to understand, what I do and or don't really need, and pointing out how to make things happen with what you already have versus just pedaling the name brand items, and to just get things started don't go overboard and burn out.
