Nice clear video, no wasted time! So let's say you back up the registry, make a change or two, but mess it up. Can you usually boot into safe mode and restore the registry there, or is that a hit or miss proposition? If so, is there a reliable method of restoring the registry once you've messed it up?

Yes you can restore the registry if for example you're computer won't boot into Windows. You would need the registry backed up to an external drive. There are tons of tutorials online to do this.

Wonderful Brett. This was wonderful Brrett. Unlike many others I buy machines to use them functionally not dabbling under the hood to adjust the settings. This was something I could have probably used long ago thus saving me the time used when reinstalling the entire OS due to corruption. Hurry with the next one. Thank you.

Good luck trying to fully restore the registry. I've never been able to fully restore it as an error always occurs and the PC becomes unusable. What I'm saying can be recreated with a virtual machine. One of the error said: Cannot import: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes, or you have insufficient privileges to perform this operation. It's better to back up the entire system partition with some program than to back up just the registry. System Restore is even better than creating a just a .reg file.

In my more than 20 years working on PC's I've never had any issues restoring the registry using a backup file. A system restore will also work but it's overkill and will override other changes made not having anything to do with the registry.

@@BrettInTech Yes, I've also been working with computers for over 20 years. And that's the weird thing, thanks to Microsoft, two people who know what they're talking about can have different experiences with their products.

I have to admit have been doing this for over 25 years as well and I too have not had an issue with creating a backup of the registry. But I have damaged my share of registries and could not use the backup, at least not by the method shown in this video lol. I usually create a windows backup if I am doing anything just in case lol. Nice video anyway, wish I took a bit more time with mine. Have a nice night!

My complete registry backup .reg file was 433MB. Compressed using 7zip into .7z format it's only 16MB.

Do you recommend using registry cleaners?
@BrettInTech2 ай бұрын
In the past yes. Now I don't. There's been too many instances where these cleaners can cause more harm than good.
