How to bag and ship corals like Chaos

Much of the fun in our hobby is trading corals between hobbyists. With the surge in aquaculture, this has led to more and more people wondering how they can bag and ship their corals safely. In this video, we show you our method for shipping. Over 90% of our business is done online and we ship dozens of packages of coral weekly. This, of course, is not the only way of doing it, but we have a better than 99% survival rate, even with postal delays. Ice packs are little bags of just regular ice you put together? Or did you buy these somewhere with gel in them?

Great video, just a few questions. You recommend "just" picking a cooler box, but where do you recommend getting these? Also do you use 4mil bags for both layers or a 3mil inside and the second bag is 4mil?

How would you suggest I carry corals with me to the Middle East ? I Work for the airlines and often buy from WWC/TSA when I am on a trip. From shop to home is normally around 36 hours. I currently use a polystyrene box, as you show, and wrap the coral water ‘pills’ in small towels in the box. I currently dont use any temperature control. The ambient temperature the box is in is around 73F throughout the whole journey. I have a good success rate with LPS but not so with SPS, so it can be expensive to loose a few frags :( Also would you suggest adding any carbon the the coral bags? Thanks for any tips

Sounds to me like you are doing everything correctly. I have never attempted to ship with carbon in the bags, so can't speak for the effectiveness in doing that. All I can suggest is more water if at all possible for the SPS. Several companies make TSA approved coral carriers. Maybe use one of those, but don't fill it completely with frags so there is more water?

Chaos Aquaculture Thanks for the info. I will try with more water. It’s not a problem for me carrying the frags on the plane, TSA have no problem with it. Frustrating when you loose a really nice SPS frag that has cost a small fortune

Building an obsession makes a thermos carrier for frags and it works great and they even print the tsa rules for traveling with pets so you can bring it through security since water is greater than 4oz
