Thank you so much for this. I had a radiator that always seemed cooler than the rest but bleeding didn't seem to make any difference. This advice helped me solve the issue and I'm now sitting in a lovely warm living room.

Excellent! Thank you. That last point about the extra rad added somewhere at the end of the line is exactly my problem. I think having a replacement rad in the living roomthat is half the length of the old one is maybe somehow making things worse (maybe it easier for water to head through the smaller on so it 'stealing' the water from the utility room extra rad that is stone cold unless I turn the living room pair off. Thanks very much for advice.

We have this exact problem with a new heating install. The rad in one room upstairs doesn’t come on. Will try this out as the rads upstairs have self bleeding air things (don’t know what they are called). Do I need to turn the heating system off to do what you mention in video?

wow my sons rad was always only getting half warm his room was as you say at the extremity of the system the room always seemed cold .Have just carried out your recommendations and within half an hour it is lovely and warm >many thanks for the advice .Chuffed to bits .

This has helped out greatly thanks, although I never seemed to have this issue when I had the old boiler, all rads were fine with 1 and 1/4 turn on their locksheilds, I wonder if the rads not heating properly now is down to modern boilers modulating down a lot more as the return temperature increases so it's not giving out as much heat as older boilers did perhaps because older boilers had a fixed output regardless of return temperature? Anyway my system is working again like it did before following this video so I'm happy!

James, Would your reverse the process if for example, your boiler was downstairs instead of upstairs? Or does it make no difference?

With regards to balancing a system with TRVs fitted, do I need to leave the TRVs fully on in future of can they be used to adjust individual room temp after balancing? Thanks in advance.

If balanced correctly - the TRV's will now be able to be adjusted for individual room settings.

Sorry I'm unclear on which side your adjusting. The side with the hot water is coming in from or the side its flowing out from. What level side each be at?. Should the hot side be open full and the out flow adjusted to a half turn?.
@benwilkins53353 жыл бұрын
The out-flow is the lockshield side, should be the cooler of the two pipes when the heating is on
@aran59463 жыл бұрын
@@benwilkins5335 okay cheers. I have two lockshield values so was confused. But should the flow-in be fully open considering any water in is only effected by how much water out or should the hot side be adjusted down a few turns too.
@benwilkins53353 жыл бұрын
@@aran5946 I believe the flow in should be fully open & the restriction only happen on the return. A TRV, when fitted, would usually limit flow in when up to temperature, so when not fitted the flow limit is only controlled by the lockshield. I'm not a plumber, but from the reading I've done I believe that to be correct.

no difference just make sure you don't bleed air from the system (radiators) while it is under pressure ...when the heating is ON in other words

Some rads will need the lock shield valve open more than others on the same floor. The only successful way to balance rads is to use a clip on or magnetic thermometer and have a difference of 12 degrees centigrade between Lock Shield & wheel head valves, with the wheel head fully open.

Balancing radiators, I have seen so many you tube videos on this subject that are wrong so thought I would correct. This applies to combi boiler systems Why have a boiler and radiators in the first place, it is to heat every rooms air that has a radiator to a desired temperature to make it comfortable to live in, modern radiator have a (TRV) Thermostatic Radiator Valves which allows the air temperature to be set. The valve at the other end of the radiator needs to be fully open to allow TRV full control. The combi boiler has two pipes connected to the rad circuit, flow and return. When working the boiler heats the flow water to the temperature set by the rad temp control on the boiler. At the same time it monitors the return temp, as the return temp nears the flow temp the flame is reduced, when nearly the same the flame is turn off only turning on again when over certain difference is monitored. Always monitor air temp in a room not radiator temp because that is what we feel. If the room is too cold turn up the TRV, if too hot turn down. The TRV should control to this setting. If you think radiators are getting too hot there may be a cold draft entering the room needing more heat to be used to heat to your temp. If the room air is not hot enough and you have the TRV fully open there maybe not enough water flowing in the rad i.e. a blockage or simply the boiler is set too low. I know there are many and various more faults but this is the basics.
@Game0verFool3 жыл бұрын
I want my radiators to all heat up at the same rate to my desired temperature. Your way would lead to sequential heating up of the radiators. The furthest away radiators getting no flow until the closest ones have heated up fully and the TRV has turned down the flow.

Oh well, not really !! So for anyone watching this, please just adjust thermostatic valve flow it is located on the thermostatic valve under the valve control thermostat handle. If you don't have thermostatic valves on your radiator, it is time to install them. that investment will pay for itself many times over. Good luck.
