It's interesting how subjecting yourself to an experience that our bodies and minds weren't evolved to deal with creates a disconnect from reality. And I personally think that's where a lot of BASE jumping get's it's magic.

I been watching your videos question how do you open your parachute

Hey! You have a little round parachute called a pilot chute at the bottom of your backpack in a little sleeve that is grabbed, pulled out of the sleeve, and tossed strongly out to your side. This little parachute is attached to your larger rectangular parachute by a long cord with two pins sewn to it which keep your larger parachute contained under very little force. When you grab and toss the little round parachute, it will catch the wind that is rushing by as you are free falling, extend behind you until it pulls out the pins keeping your large parachute contained in your backpack, the backpack will open almost like a piece of origami with four folds simultaneously, your little round parachute will reach full extension and then begin to pull out your large rectangular parachute, as you continue to fall, the lines which will suspend you beneath your rectangular parachute (which were coiled in a pocket of your parachute) are now being pulled out to full length. As these lines approach full length your parachute begins to inflate from the rushing air traveling by it from the center, then outward as your parachutes lines are fully extended by your body’s weight. At this point the parachute expands and is ‘flying’ or ‘gliding’, as it is actually a wing traveling forward rather than a toy parachute army soldier simply sinking downward.

From the bridge view it looks like it barely opens in time... From the ground looking up you can better see that it actually opens pretty high

Depth perception is weird. Typically it becomes more difficult for our eyes when we don’t have a reference point or object we frequently see. This is why our ability to tell how high we are above large bodies of water under canopy goes out the window. Some guys will cut away for fun over water and think they’re at 30’ feet when they’re actually 80’.

Going to do a bunch of skydives this spring but have a lot of Paramotor and paraglider experience and he said to chat later and see where I'm at. Just talking with him made me feel really good about that school. Seems extremely experienced and has safety as #1 not just looking to make money

That’s awesome man! Honestly all the guys I know who had paragliding experience before getting into BASE seem to be far better canopy pilots in the BASE environment than others. I’ve heard many courses take paragliding experience in itself as just as valued as skydiving. But many want you to not only have the free-fall and fast paced skills of skydiving, but also the experience of packed->deployed -quick decision transition familiarity you’re introduced to in skydiving, which only becomes more intense and vital in BASE. There’s so many parallels between skydiving and BASE that it only makes sense to get that experience and not skip over it if you’re really serious about safety. I’ll completely second that SRBA is probably last on the list for courses that have making money as their main priority and treat their students as just another number. Tom genuinely cares about the sport and it’s participants, and actually does his best to convince you not to participate, against his best interest, to be sure you know what you’re getting yourself into. After seeing the jumpers who have come out of SRBA, I can’t personally recommend them enough.

Apex are the bomb. The death note should be universal, too. I've got a video on my phone that tells the people all they need to know. It's a real fucking skillet to the face. Edit: 8:34 is almost text book. Don't beat yourself up on the little things and roll with the punches.

They really are man, Todd’s attitude alone sold me on their gear and what they stand for. I think you’re right about the note. As jumpers we probably live in an area of ignorance to realities more often than we realize. Something as simple as a video, as hard as it may be like you said, is so much more important than I think a lot of us realize. Appreciate that man, a little over a hundred jumps later and my exits seem to be improving a bit believe it or not lol. But every now and then, without fail, nerves creep in to override habit when you least expect it.

This may be a bit difficult for me to answer, and I feel it’s different for everyone. But I had an image in my head of what it was, or what it would be like for nearly half my life, but the complexities of the experience and surreal nature of the act together make it beyond what I could have imagined. The crippling fear and existential thoughts when making my first few dozen jumps were beyond what I thought I would be confronted with. There’s a sense of magic, like you’re breaking a portion of reality you once knew to be true that runs deeper than I think a lot of jumpers realize starting out. I think this leads into a spiritual connection on some level for everyone whether they realize it or not. There is both an incredible intensity in every jump, as well as a comforting peace. I think the balance between these two polarizing states of mind are something you quickly come to terms with understanding and controlling as you’re learning. So in this way it isn’t simply “jump -> adrenaline rush -> deployment -> comfort” but something more vibrant and complex than can be put into words. There’s elements akin to flying with a bouquet of emotions you wouldn’t expect.
