How to be a boss
This isn't just "how to be a boss", but how to be a "good" boss. I'm not saying I know anything, just my short experience of managing people and being managed by people. What worked and some what didn't.
The 2 key ingredients to me were autonomy and respect. From both parties. A business is a group of smaller operations that need to occur. Whoever is responsible for the operation is in effect the "business owner" of that particular operation. The person, whether they are the actual boss or not, should treat their area as their business and be responsible for it. This means that the "boss" needs to let them feel ownership of this area. Tell them how you want the work done and why they want it done that way. Then let them get on with it. If they want to change the way they perform the task, they need to clear it with you (the boss) first.
The end result should be, in a large organisation, 1000 little businesses within 1 big businesses, all reporting up to a "boss" and eventually to a big boss. It sounds simple but so many companies fail due to a handful of acidic reasons:
Ego
Micro managing
"I'm your boss" syndrome
Irrelevant tasks
If you act like a boss and need to ever tell anyone that you are their boss, you have failed as a boss.
If you micro manage someone and don't give them autonomy, you either need to get rid of them or get rid of yourself.
Giving someone pointless tasks just because you can is the quickest way to either get fired or lose the respect of your staff.
So many people let a title go to their head. The type that introduces themselves as "I'm a VP at JPMorgan" and not the correct introduction of "I work at JPMorgan". If you need to sling a title, you're a complete failure.
Don't forget to give constant feedback, don't save it for the "annual review", drop the annual review and give constant encouragement and guidance, much stronger.
If you are a boss, you can not socialise with staff. It's simple. There is a huge line that must be drawn. Why? Because some day you will need every inch of that degree of separation. Either pay related, HR related. You can be acquaintances but not friends.
