Yeah, figuring that I've caught myself on those before, it should work even better on a rodent. I've heard of attaching a bunch of trebles on car stereos to make a thief pay in blood for their troubles.

Already knew the treble hook snare . Have never had to use it but it’s part of the kit . Also have nails for spikes on a windlass trap . Very good job pointing out the contamination of the canteen .. when it comes down to real survival there are no rules and regulations to follow .. it’s simply survive or perish , this mindset must be the motivational drive to keep you alive .

Finally I’ve found another channel with someone that is actually teaching practical applications when sharing their knowledge. And then I see you’ve also completed the advanced course at the pathfinder school too!?! I’ve watched Sean Kelly for years and seeing another whose mastered the skill that provides different perspectives on the same skills and how they’re applied is simply amazing. Soo happy, gained a sub and views for sure because I love seeing different methods and then applying them myself. Keep them coming when you’re able to, saw you’re still active duty but I’ll watch them when you do post em whenever it is.

Great stuff! Obviously you have your methods pretty scienced-out over time but the main area we seem to diverge on is water. I'm a big fan of having a much larger metal container in my kits. The first is a stainless steel 5 L milk pail with a lid. It's a bit heavy but not really huge, it fits into all but the smallest packs I own. And it's the perfect size to stuff my Helikon-Tex Swagman roll into! That gives me a very potent shelter system and the ability to easily move, sanitize and store over a gallon water at a time. And when that's too heavy or bulky I have a titanium 2900 ml pot with lid & bail. This fits in pretty much every pack I own and being Ti it weighs practically nothing. IMO it's an absolute game-changer to be able to water a few liters at at time! In fact it makes things so much easier that the TV show "Alone" limits contestants to pots of 2 L or less (at least they used to, haven't seen the show in a few seasons).

You accomplish a lot in 15 minutes. I went and bought some of those 1 walled metal bottles so water can be stored and be heated over the fire. No sense using plastic, not as durable or as usable. Both can store things from getting wet too. Cant beat wool blankets, good for year round use and kept in the vehicle for the emergency. Thank you Andrew, always look forward to your videos. God bless you When out in the field, what do you do to keep your axe and knives sharpened? Somehow my kits always seem to include the kitchen sink, meaning i add so much to it that its very heavy. Seems like everything is essential to me, but a guy of knowledge like you knows how to do without the extras.

Hi Andrew. Filament trick is great though most flashlights nowadays are mostly LED based. Wondering if you can recreate d same effect using LED.... Regarding your flahlight fire methods, any idea if we can use 2 AAs or Cs sizes or is it critical that a D size b used? Either way, we get a 3V voltage. Or am thinking combining 3 AAs or Cs sizes to get 4.5v instead + lead wires?

I’ve seen the treble hook trap before. It is very unethical and illegal if caught. At least, that’s what a Game Warden in MS told me. However, in a real life or death survival scenario, gotta get the food somehow. I prefer handhold traps with nails around a hole. Or snare setups. But, this was a good tool for those that may have never seen it. The lightbulb trick was a new one to me. I never would have thought to sacrifice a bulb like that. Very slick. Only other thing I’d have done, fill the bottle and the cup with water. No point in wasting empty space during your trip back from the old waterhole. Good video. I’d love to see more detail on setting up the pack and how to load it up securely. Oh, and where the heck can I get a belt like that?!?! That was friggin’ cool!

A question about your shelter. How much of a downpour can those leaves resist? I figured a great use for any garbage bag or those cheap space blanket would be to line the roof of the inside of the shelter to hold off any drips that might make it through all the layers of leaves.

Ethical shmethical. Food is needed for survival. Hypothetically, if I were having to survive I would probably be poaching to beat the band. Hypothetically. You guys, and you know of whom I am referring, are a veritable plethora of survival knowledge and skills. One question was answered with the canteen. I was wondering, after the water was gathered in the canteen, could it be heat sterilized and returned to the canteen thereby sterilizing any residual moisture in the canteen? The limitation is how much water the cup holds which is roughly half the canteen. So boil, cool, consume, repeat. Thank you, Major. Appreciate all your hard work.

Allow me to add my accolades and appreciation to the heap, Sir. If at all possible, could you do more indepth tutorial on preparing ration packs? I know there has to be more to it than grabbing some beef jerky and an energy bar. What would be the appropriate contents and approach for a self prepped MRE of sorts? Should there be adjustments for summer vs. winter packs? I know, that's several questions, but sincere inquiries from a civilian perspective. Thank you, Sir.

That hook technique also works on birds. Works better, really, because they gulp. It is also a great reason to have wire leaders, or a reason to sacrifice 4" or so of snare wire per hook set. As for the water gathering, a couple of produce bags or an oven bag folded at the bottom of the canteen/bottle carrier adds functionally no mass and no volume, it's like having a couple of playing cards down there. And it simplifies that question.

I like to build my bedding first and then build my Structure around it. It is much easier. Pile a ton of leaves and/or boughs for bedding before you build the walls. Otherwise you have to try to place your bedding into the small cracks and crevasses while on your knees and bent over. Hope this helps someone.

G'day Andrew, mighty fine stuff once again mate. Its been said; (and rightly so), there's a 1001 uses for a shamag; a bow saw blade handle makes that 1002 I reckon. Thought you were gonna say what do you need more, a fire or the torch, (flashlight), but off course you have a spare globe hidden away, lol. Can't do that with LEDs, not instantly anyway lol. Like the trap too, a very straightforward method without much kit or complexity, perhaps not the most humane, though hey man, what really is ? ...... and if it means not starving............. Oh yeah, mad if you dont have some sort of high Kj/Calorie pack, I like a well balanced trail mix as a go to but more variety even better and probably last longer too, depending on one's discilpine. Cheers Duke.

Add a a couple of gallon freezer bags or a turkey roasting bag for unsafe water collection. Take back to camp and process/use as needed. I like those little Lipton soup packs, 2 in a box for a buck. Also bullion cubes bring flavor to a fresh game stew or can be sipped on cold nites. Sugar, salt and pepper packs .Also if your not apposed to cooking , check out the small packet of premixed cupcake ,cornbread . and gravy mixes. It is amazing how just a few calories of warm food can boost morale. Even plain hot water can warm your internal core, rehydrate you and save energy reserves. Great production Major ! Water safety question - presuming you've got no Sawyer, Grail, or chemicals, after collecting dirty water in your plastic canteen or another found plastic container, how would you go about making the canteen/plastic container clean enough to safely carry clean/safe water ? Don't want to put safe water in a dirty container... If it's a metal canteen/container, boiling would do it. But plastic ? Thanks !
@backwoodsbrooksknives4625
@backwoodsbrooksknives4625 2 жыл бұрын
You can pour boiling water into a canteen. The plastic used in at least nalgeen products is a lexan polycarbonate and has a melting point of about 600ish degrees. The plastic in a military canteen is high density polyethylene and has a melting point of about 400ish degrees. So long as they are not exposed to open flame you can pour the disinfected water back in and then swish it around to kill anything left in the bottle. Be careful with the cap and threads though. This is also a useful feature for winter excursions. Fill two 32oz nalgeen with near boiling water and slide them into some spare socks placing one in the foot of your sleeping bag a keep the other one by your core.

That was a question I had. I figured the canteen could take the heat but the canteen cup volume is your limitation. To fill the canteen you would then have to get a 2nd cup full of water from the source , boil it then top off the canteen.

@@backwoodsbrooksknives4625 According to the CDC, heating water to a roiling boil for one minute at sea level has “high effectiveness in killing” protozoa such as Giardia and cryptosporidium (which is resistant even to bleach), bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella, and others. Water temperatures above 160° F will kill pathogens within 30 minutes and at 185 degrees, just a few minutes. Keeping the water boiling for a full minute isn't possible, but in an emergency situation, it should be fairly good.

Most plastic or even glass bottes can be used to boil over a fire. Often, its a 1-time use thing, but you can sometimes get more. Obviously, its not a "good" idea, and there are plenty of downsides (such as possibly getting cancer from boiling water in a plastic container) but if its a true survival situation, you gotta do what you gotta do. Generally, you want to suspend it as high over the fire (ideally just a coal bed) as possible while still allowing it to heat the water inside to boiling. This ONLY works if there sufficient water inside your container. Also... there are water bags that are safe and stury enough to boil water inside. Id recommend keeping one or two of those onhand if you dont intend of carrying another way to boil the water.

Never thought about using fish hooks to catch land animals. Interesting idea....I would have just used rat traps.

Great tips, Andrew, as always. I also love the energy. Some people talk so slowly they look like they're about to fall asleep. Your excitement and eagerness to teach are much appreciated and I am glad to see your channel growing. Keep it up and thank you.

your hook snare is used quite often here for troutlineing turkeys.. it is illegal as hell but they still do it... but you need a steel leader and bank line for the turkey.. fishing line will snap
