the one thing that held me back from becoming a full time creator sooner was the comfort zone. Working a 9-5 and a steady income kept me content with life. It wasn't until i was overlooked for numerous promotions and raises that i knew i was in the wrong place. I had the opportunity to get paid and travel for a luxury client and was still second guessing losing my job. I definitely think one thing that stopped was just my own self-doubs. People loved my work that I was doing initially here and there, but I always just felt like it wasn't enough. And what it took was some real self reflection to be like you know, I got an eye for this, people appreciate my work, and I need to believe in myself and push forward with this. My first camera was also the Canon t2i, I bought it at a veteran bar at 2 in the morning and I'll never regret that decision because it pushed me into a creative art therapy after the military.

I can't relate to not being enough but when you think even deeper, why even compare your work to anyone else. You are your own cloth, not a cut from a different cloth. When working with people, you then nit the clothes together. Peace to you. Thank you for your service no matter your MOS.

@@Hx4DNegus much respect! I don't think I insecure in terms of comparing my work to others. I think I just struggled seeing the worth in my own work and if people would like it. 2020 actually served as this profound year for me where it allowed me to be introspective and truly appreciate my own work for its value. This is me bro, people say I got an eye for photo/video hell I was making mixtape covers back in high school as well. and even did a small stint of college for graphic design degree which I eventually drop out of but years down the line after dropping the camera habit I picked it back up and it's better competition in my area than me so I always compare my work to theirs. So seeing that I am not at their level yet I have that self doubt but it's something I had to get over and I still fight it now, cause I'm not the biggest or best but I at least try and stay consist and get better with every project.

I’ve heard so many times that I’m a good photographer. But what holds me back from quitting my day job to be a full time photographer is not having that sense of financial security and having to learn new skill sets, knowing that they may take so much more time to learn. LOVED this video. Not many videos out there speak to what I’m thinking about 🤙🏼

Maaan... this must be a sign... thanks for this man! Sidenote: what I feel is stopping me but also pushes me.. is my career. I’ve been a post producer for about 10 years now.. and the more I moved up.. the less freedom and creativity you have.. which pushed me to youtube. I started an animation channel.. and that was fun.. but has I got more responsibilities.. my time became more limited.. at the same time I also have a secret channel that pulls in a decent amount of passive income... I then realized that I could use all my skills working in tv, and the animation channel thought me so much about youtube.. so still wanting to create but having my career still taking up a big chunk of my time.. I got into I realized that I can drop a 14k subscriber channel and start over and really make this happen. And it’s because.. my career pushes me to do it and I need a creative outlet. Thank you for the video man! It really helps a lot.

Fear of failure is a big one. I just turned 27 and I started my journey of becoming a videographer/photographer in the middle of 2019. I had only done a few video jobs when I partnered up with a friend of mine who was also passionate about filmmaking and started a production company. However we haven’t had enough client work to sustain us so unfortunately I have a full time job to pay for my bills/camera gear. I felt discouraged during the pandemic because times were so uncertain and my job and paycheck was the only certain thing I had (I was one of the lucky ones who kept their job). However I realize that my fear of failure is holding me back. Holding me back on actively looking for clients and actually trying to make this work. Thanks for making this video. I definitely cut back on my financial responsibilities by moving back home. Now I have zero excuse. Pushing myself to make this my full time gig by the end of 2021/start of 2022. Let’s go!

I’m working past a lot of what you mentioned in your “Just start” video, just getting past the over-worked feelings in my head, wanting to be motivated at all times, but not showing up for myself and doing the work every day. Also, not really sure who my target clientele is just yet. That’s been my toughest challenge, figuring that out.

Thanks for making this video I't will help a lot of creatives out there see their worth and hopefully follow their dreams.

Student Loans + Learning Curve. I went to school for mechanical engineering, and found out after quitting my first job out of college that I never wanted to work for someone at a "traditional job" ever again. I also realized that I liked engineering school because of the freedom to learn, explore, create. I made a few videos with my phone in school for extracurricular groups I was in, but thought nothing of it, only that it was kind of fun. 2 years later, I picked up a camera and I haven't stopped learning or chasing the dream. Actually quitting my current job TODAY to become a full time filmmaker! I've been driving the same car for nearly 6 years, and rarely go out to eat. I spend most of my waking moments filming, editing, meeting with clients, and lifting/running - I'm a simple man with a dream I am 100% committed to realizing - "I think, therefore I am".

I have a chance to follow my filmmaking dreams full time, there's gear & everything and at the same time am looking at my education and thinking, should I keep applying for engineering jobs? Am a recent graduate by the way and what has kept me in doubt is the fact that I know creative field takes some reputation (time) to pay well. Would I have thrown away my chance at getting experience in engineering field and possibly a chance at future jobs! Ofcourse I am and always will be a film maker, even while studying. I was doing photography and videography.

I’m still working the 9-5 (been at CP Rail for 10 years now). The thing with me is that I’m comfortable right now. It’s nice having consistent income. But I’m not necessarily happy because photography/filmmaking is where my heart is. I have a car payment and a mortgage payment, which actually isn’t too high, but it’s definitely weighing me down. I have been fortunate enough to save enough money that I can live comfortably for 1-4 years without working. I have also been in a huge creative rut, so that’s not helping either haha. I’m patient, though. I’ll know when it’ll be the right time. 🙂

I started my fulltime journey January 2020 right before Covid hit hard in the states. I'm a music creator. It's definitely tough starting off, but I quickly got online and went to various networking events (pre covid... which was about two months) and was able to gage what the people in my area had needs for creatively. Music wasn't a HUGE priority unfortunately here in MN lol However that didn't stop me. I'm a fulltime father and husband as well and we have all the bills that you spoke of in the video, so I had to figure it out. One HUGE thing I did was hopped on Linkedin. I now have a secure monthly income through Storyblocks providing them with royalty free music for their content creators. I also do things in the Sync Licensing world for Tv/Film. Selling beats online is also another avenue as well as youtube. I'm also passionate about creating photography and video as well. I study a TON of your vids as well as Creative Ryan and various others. Things are slowly building up for me, so i'm extremely grateful for the experience and thankful for my wife for trusting me and allowing the opportunity to do what I really love. Blessing ya'll

One thing i would say is being a full time creative doesn't need to mean you have to go full time freelance at the start. You can learn your trade in an environment that gives you an annual salary. Two years out of uni and I have been working for a media and marketing production company, shooting small ads. My 9-5 is mostly editing, some shooting and writing and i get to work in a team and learn from and with people. Not always dream projects but it's a consistent pay cheque. Then i pursue script writing and my own projects on the side. Maybe for you that persona project is building a youtube channel, shooting short films etc.

It's been a journey but I'm still pushing through. My mom passed away a couple of weeks ago and I had to cancel on two clients but again it's part of the journey. Anyone who is a believer and good at what you do fucking do it. If you got bills and such save up for 6 months worth of rent ON TOP of doing clients. It's possible but you HAVE to out yourself in uncomfortable situations like going out and cold calling, emailing, eating canned foods, telling "friends" you're saving up for more life and so on. Regardless i wanna give all my content creation friends a big a shout out especially YC who's been %100.

Even though I left my job years ago, I've been making it this far but, I want to drive more into the creator space in multiple multiple avenues. Finding clients that want to pay was the hardest thing for me as a photographer. Just as you mentioned, I fell in love with video when I chose to take on that challenge. #oneframeatatime

The only thing stopping me from going full time is my current job. I made over six figures last year because of the pandemic (tons of overtime). However, I've just been investing in gear and trying to network. I've had a few sets where people just stop and watch or I'll get mad love from people in the community. That to me is crazy because I'm rarely working with clients except for the people I know. Anyway your vid's are always helpful and I'd love to have a little more freedom and flexibility as a creator. Thanks again

I'm not yet a full-time creator because I am still in high school. I have started to pick up a lot more jobs recently, but with university coming, I feel I will not have as much time to work towards my goal of becoming a full-time creator. So I would say the main thing holding me back is school, if you have any tips for me, I would love to hear them!
