I recently took a few days off and travelled down to Lynmouth on the Devon Coast. Lately I've been thinking a lot about what it means to be authentically yourself in your photography, or filmmaking, or whatever your creative pursuits, so on top of taking photographs I decided to make a film with some of these thoughts.
I hope it challenges you to be brave enough to be yourself in your own work.

I am sure you will keep making these videos Sean, but if it helps, these are the ones that really make a difference to people long term. They inspire and provoke the thoughts needed to improve or keep on creating work regardless of the reception from others etc. I appreciate the words and thoughts you provide in these passionate videos, I think it covers a lot of what I think myself regarding photography. Thanks Andy

Why this channel doesn't have millions of subscribers is beyond me. It certainly deserves it. The content is honest, straight from the heart, based on a huge amount of experience and skill and I just click with this guy every single time. The problem I've got is these videos are constantly making me evaluate myself as a person and a photographer and more often than not, sowing the seeds of self doubt. I'm a club photographer and club photography involves entering lots of competitions to get some feedback and maybe a little acclaim for my work on occasions. I therefore find myself studying what judges are looking for and tailoring my entries to give them a good chance of what I think would catch the judges eye. If truth be told, I'm not really being true to myself by doing this because a lot of work that wins competitions is based more on photographic art than straight record shots skilfully made. Take a look at PAGB exhibitions and you will probably see that over 80% of images are photographic art, and I'm trying to compete with this but it's just not my style. I'm wondering whether entering club competitions and exhibitions is having a really damaging effect on the authenticity of my personal style of work. I really want to do my own thing but it just seems to dissolve into an effort to get acclaim for competition results, which I do on occasions. The trouble is that it doesn't make me happy. I feel that my work is contrived...... Sean, you've got me snookered again mate..lol

And that "what's up" that Peter does, has been done by others before. My son has done thast on his channel for over 3 years now. There's a fine line between copying and being influenced by. But finding your voice through a myriad of influences is generally tolerated. It's the flat out copies I can't handle. Just be you. And the you, that you are can have splashes here and there from what influenced you, creating an overall new creation; yet you are still true to yourself.

Sean, keep doing what you need to do to remain authentic. It is so easy to spend your life trying to be what you think others expect you to be and in so doing lose sight of your own true self, even to the point that you no longer recognise what that true self looks like. As Spike Milligan once said 'will the real me please stand up'.

Thanks for sharing your story. I just started my own KZbin channel named Kudziology about a month ago. I have found myself judging my content thinking it's not good enough to be on this platform. Your words were very uplifting and inspiring. Even though I am feeling down right now I know it won't last forever. Being authentic and true to yourself is the best advice a person can give. Thanks again for sharing :)

Thank you so much for the inspiring words. I got started in photography later than most and I feel like I've become stagnate. Lost some where between my passion and where I want to take it professionally. This definitely helps.

"All art completes its cycle when it's appreciated by someone else." Thank you. Thank you! That succinctly put into words a the tension of what REALLY motivates my creativity/art. I also appreciate your caution not to pay too much attention, but put that need in its "appropriate box."

Just like a great image, the recognition of your work will be recognised by those who appreciate what we are looking at. Great images aren't engineered and I have to believe my work should flow from my creative side and never to be scripted, or worse, copied from another. I have to believe that if my work is seen and liked then it's for the the reasons I make this content and not because it sells well or because it's commercially viable. I have only just discovered your channel and I think your videos are brilliant.

Thanks for making these "inspirational" videos, as opposed to the more popular Tips ones. Being an introvert obviously contributes a great deal to the patent authenticity of your videos. Relating past memories such as on this one, or internal critiques, are the reason I find your videos so refreshing. Keep going.

man i thought you were one of those youtuber or photographer online that trying to help other people to level up their skills. but honestly saying now, i think youre more like an artist to me. forgive me as an opportunist cuz i might do the thing that you described to get money. but i encourage you keeping your own way and creating your own style because i think thats what makes you unique. and after all, i do enjoy watching your videos.

I believe that people can never be themselves because there was nothing original to begin with. We are all copies of each other. That's how humanity evolves, we take something that already exist and make something new out of it. And who are you? You are everything collectively that is inside of your brain. As soon as you "copy" somebody else you do own that shit. And don't let anybody else tell you otherwise. But the point of the game is not to copy, the point is to make it 1000 times better! That's why the worst advice you can give to anybody is to "be yourself".Good Artists Copy; Great Artists Steal - Pablo Picasso .. And I recommend you to watch everything is a remix everythingisaremix.info/watch-the-series/ .. So the best advice I can give is "Don't give a fUUUCK", do whatever you like. Even if you like copying others, but if you do then you have to be the best copyist in the world.

The phrase "What does it profit a man/woman to sell their soul to gain the world" springs to my mind. An earlier comment made here was that its impossible to be original. However if we at least try to be ourselves as much as we can isn't that enough? I would argue that our life experiences shine through in our works which are unique. Maybe we try and overthink that issue and we should just try and get on with it. Top work as always Sean. Keeping it going Bro

I agree with Peter that the videos are precious but I don’t subscribe to his view that you are ‘trying out this format’. He completely misunderstands the message you are putting out there. Thank you Sean, for having the courage and for taking the time to communicate and nourish in such a lucid and compelling way.
