HOW PHOTOGRAPHY CAN MAKE YOU HAPPY //
Flow is a mental state we can get into that acts as a form of pure focus and happiness.
It was named by Hungarian-American psychologist, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in the 1970s.
Flow is about being completely present in the moment. It gives us a form of mental freedom. Risk-taking vastly increases, creativity vastly increases. All our focus is directed at the task at hand, and that means that our anxieties become diminished, as they are formed from bad things that have happened in the past and the possibility of what bad things may happen in the future. Our mind in drawn completely into the now.
On top of that, scientists have discovered that Flow also vastly increases our productivity and our ability to learn and remember.

My mom died on March 10th and since then I have noticed that my behavior has changed. Before I didn't usually go out to shoot that much but recently I have really enjoyed going out to take photos. It helps me get my mind off that and since it's also spring it's really pleasant when the air doesn't hurt my face. Getting good photos makes me feel better and like I've accomplished something. Really great video that has true meaning.

This is really what it's all about, isn't it? Besides being a photographer/artist, I’m a hypnotherapist and I nudge people into this same happy state through trance. If I can get them and keep them there they can solve almost any of their issues. The "fire" that's needed for excellence in any form is the same whether it be photography or dance or writing or musicianship. Once you find the fire you can apply this same sensibility to anything. My compliments on your video editing and graphic design skills, by the way.

Being a life long artist I’ve been lucky enough to know exactly the state, your, speaking of. I was in the middle of completing an oil painting of both my parents. I would paint til early hours of the morning..I found a groove and almost zen state of mind. Almost out of body with no real measure of time or even concern what day it was. I’m close to retirement and with my love of the art of photography I’m hoping to get back to that state. Thanks for bringing this to light. I’ve also purchased Darren Brown book and am enjoying it. Keep up the inspiring videos.

Absolutely sound, realistic and enduring advice. Many believe spending $$ on the latest and greatest equipment will suddenly propel them from mediocre to excellent only discover they are just paying alot more to get the same mediocre results. Photography is in the eye to a much greater extent than it is in the camera bag.

I expect making of these videos is an example of flow, of Jamie in the moment, with the right skills, with a definite goal to create a work of art, even if it takes longer, and getting the high from the process and the end result. As a person on the other end, watching and absorbing the end result, that energy, passion and skill shows and is appreciated. It is good to see something so though-provoking, well-crafted and executed, it brings joy to the audience. I much prefer waiting weeks or longer to watch something so well-thought out and professional, than something with nothing new to say, however passionately they do it, pumped out twice a week for the ad revenue and done in 30 mins in someone’s ‘KZbin’ corner with a few basic cuts of the Ums and Ahs that see their head bopping about like a bubblehead.

Another great one. One's ability to do a lot of good work is based on one's ability to enter flow as soon as possible when working. Too often we seek external motivation, thinking that that will do the trick. Better yet, to race into flow and let motivation take care of itself once there. .

Nicely done explanation of a very important topic. One quibble: an increase of 5% productivity providing a week’s worth of additional productive time actually undersells the value. Over the course of a year-say 50 weeks of work-1.05 x 50 works out to 52.5 weeks, or an additional two and a half weeks of work. I track therapist productivity for mental health clinic and that’s how I consider it. This holds if you average 40 hours a week of work or 4.

Great video. For me ‘flow’ is getting into the zone, whether its at work or creative hobbies (for me photography). I enjoy doing it and the tools at hand don’t want to distract or take me out the zone while doing it. This means not having a buggy, slow laptop and not having a camera that’s fiddly and fights you while trying to get the shot. As a result I’m not as productive at work as I could be (company provided crappy mid spec laptop) but have worked up to Nikon pro cameras that I’ve learnt and now can use blindfold. My creativity can ‘flow’. Life is full of instant gratification and now now now distractions. It’s good to switch off from that and be creative.

This is amazing! I didn't know that it was scientifically called "flow" but I've experienced this feeling so often: When I completely loose any sense of time, forget to eat, forget everything around me and just WORK. It's true, this is probably one of the happiest states I've ever been in. It almost feels like I'm not really there anymore, in a positive way. When - for whatever reason - I drop out of the flow it sometimes can even feel like a crash against a brick wall. Or like waking up. I need some time to completely re-adjust my senses and my mind. I never really talked to anybody about this feeling, I guess I don't want to be seen as a workaholic. But then watching this video touched me so deeply. With every new sentence on the definition of "flow" I though: Yes, that's it! That's exactly it! I felt SO understood.

Thank you Jamie, it is nice to hear about oriental philosophy once in a while. If I´m not wrong, Cartier-Bresson describes this kind of mind state when he was taking photos, as something like forgetting about himself and just focusing on the moment; take the photo more like an instinct than a reflective action. Keep up the good work Jamie, love from Spain.

Always asked myself how it’s so easy to go trough days of working 12+ hrs on set and can’t duplicate the same productivity in other aspects of life. It would be interesting to learn how to induce “flow” in acts where it doesn’t occur naturally. Great video! Thanks.
