As a law student, I think this is very idealistic and not reflective of many law student's experiences 1. I use a laptop and take notes for 3 hours straight from class. Lecture notes have been the most valuable tool which I have been able to summarise again and again to make it more succinct. Notes on paper are not transferable and become a series of incomplete sentences and messy handwriting trying to keep up with the lecturer (yes that is while trying to summarise whats been said instead of taking it verbatim) 2. Lecturers should assign practical assessments to apply the material. Practice hypotheticals are a great way to cement the knowledge. 3. Teaching others? In the time it takes for me to even understand the material enough so that I could then at least teach it on a basic level to then receive the advanced understanding its basically exam period. 4. Failing low stake tests is a great way to learn? Every law unit I study is worth 1.5K. My aim is to accumulate as many marks as possible to I have as safe a margin as possible on the exam at the end so in the event (hasnt happened yet in my 4 years studying law) that I fail the exam, I have enough marks to pass the unit. Failure is unfortunately a luxury I cannot afford. Plus, with the emphasis on getting those high grades and having a high GPA in order to get a job by the end of the degree, the system does not allow room for failure. 5. Adopt a uni professor? These guys dont even know their students and you just move on.

John Smith We are probably studying under different circumstances, but I disagree on your note-taking point. Most students use laptops. They are trying to suck in all information they can gather on one subject and whilst writing, they lose focus. I can recommend you something, though. Just keep your laptop and notebook in your bag. Sit down, LISTEN to the lecture. Just concentrate and listen to the professor. After the lecture, take out your notebook and summarize. This technique is used by very few students as far as I could tell, but it works wonders. You do not need a laptop to take sufficient notes in lectures.

@@TheGamerozi I have thrived throughout my time in law school doing exactly what I do. Because of this, I think it is unwise to take a one size fits all approach when it is really more about finding the learning technique that works for you. In saying that though, I think your approach is problematic for a couple of reasons. The first reason why I find your approach problematic is the fact that it is impractical to just sit idle and listen to someone talk for three hours and try to take in everything they are saying. Studies have shown that your attention span and ability to concentrate drops significantly by around 20-30 mins from the time you sit down and start listening in a lecture. When you are typing notes on the other hand, you are performing an activity which keeps you more alert and provides you with the resources at the end that you can then use to synthesise your understanding when it comes to preparing for exams and other assessments. I find that you do not do the majority of your learning during lectures because it takes time for your brain to process the information and understand it. That's where going over your notes and repetition and application of the content plays a vital role. But to be able to do this, you need a record of the information your lecturer is providing in their speech, as well as a general feel for what the topic is about in broad terms so you have some context for what you are trying to learn. The second reason why I find your approach problematic is because your approach has a huge reliance on memory since you are gathering information that you have yet to synthesise (the difference between remembering and understanding). Studies have shown time and time again that you will only remember around 10% of what you have heard when you come out of a lecture (probably less the longer the duration of the lecture is). So what you are really suggesting is that you walk out of that lecture and write notes on 10% of the material you actually remember. That's a lot of time wasted and benefit from the lecture lost altogether. And unfortunately, you essentially have incomplete notes on the topic to work off which now leaves you having to do a lot more groundwork to gather the information you should have just taken down when it was being offered to you.

In high school, I experimented with a typed only math study guide and scored a high B cramming literally the night/morning of my final exam. In undergrad, I read before the semester starts and type a study guide. I FLOAT through the beginning and receive extremely high As doing this method. Going to class simply reinforces what was read and subsequently typed. Typed notes aren’t for everyone, but can be beneficial when done correctly.

I'm not in law school but plans to study the law and aiming for law school. I personally find it difficult to take notes from law jurisprudence works. I read these books because again I'm not in law school yet. On top of that I have learning disability but I try my best to make notes.

"B bombing" at Harvard is the equivalent of being the top student at every other law school that is not Tier 1. Since most federal judges went to top schools, just going to a top school increases your likelihood to make the best connections despite how skilled you actually are. Name brand bias at work.

I decided to do it because nearly three years ago I developed a business preparing executive clemencies for incarcerated individuals, and, because I have so many requests from wrongfully incarcerated persons whose cases ultimately need to be in court, I knew I wanted to be able to represent such persons rather than referring them elsewhere. Maybe you can convince your classmates that it worth the shot for your investment. And if they don't play along, by seeing you thrive, they might reconsider. I lived in that and was stuck with starting school at almost 8 yrs old because I did not reach 7 yet in September, the starting of the year, but was born in November. Even though I could have taken 2 yrs in one in America, in that society where I grew up, there was nothing like the concept of "competition" to the point of having one child above the average of his age/ education. Help those who are walking along but if they don't want to catch up, keep going forward.

I'm sitting here crying because I want to go to law school so badly but I dont believe have the confidence yet. I have a BS and worked for Child Protection and now work for a Mass Tort firm. Im a fast learner and love it but want more...I am just what she said, old school i guess. I recently took out books from he library and bought books from savers about law. This is nonsense! The key to success in lawschool: (1) Cancel lecture (turn it into a study hall); (2) Read the damn textbook; (3) More quizzes to show mastery of the material; (4) More feedback on student writing and analysis using IRAC and CRAC.
