3 years late....but the reason tapping/flicking your cheek for the raindrop sound works is a little bit of the extra air pressure you mentioned being displaced, but more so it's the vibration of the impact on your cheek resonating in the naturally acoustic environment of the mouth and being directed through the whistle formed lips. It sounds even better if you knock the top of your head with your knuckles or slap your forehead and use the same lip form/tongue movement.

you don't need your tongue, if you're using the one without lungs then you can suck in and push out air using a combination of lip pressure and jaw muscles, and the normal breathing water drop is even easier, just a semi-hollow whistle leading into a normal pitch one quickly
