Hi Luke, I had another question where I am a bit unclear. Is the ACSM CEP exam valid in Canada? Any comments on which one you found more thorough and robust? Isn't it that the ACSM version doesn't have a practical viva, whereas CSEP-CEP does? In my previous conversation with you, I had requested you, if possible, to give a few video examples of how a typical practical test day scenario and built of exam is. Would appreciate your inputs, thanks in advance.

Hi Luke, could you please comment on this? I assume you are on a long weekend?
@lukemacmillan_2 жыл бұрын
Hi Parag! Apologies on the delay. ACSM CEP would prove valid for most organizations in Canada in my experience. However, not all. Yes, you are right. There is a practical component to the CSEP testing, which would make me agree with you in regards to it being more thorough. I dont want to dive into too much detail on exams, but all of the information you need is listed on the certifying organization's website! Maybe I can break down the practical components in future videos! Thanks! 💪

Thanks a lot for this great explanation! I am a PE student and I want to work in a metabolic institute as a CEP. I have two questions that I will be grateful if you could answer. First: do you advise me to get ASCA certification or any other strength and conditioning certification and how it can be helpful? Second: is my bachelor's degree in PE in addition to ACSM CEP certification are enough or should I get a master degree in CEP?
@lukemacmillan_3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ihsan! Thanks for the comment and great questions. 1) I would go after a strength and conditioning certification personally only because I recognize the benefit that these certifications can have while working with chronic disease and injuries. Having a greater understanding of S&C will do you well throughout your career in my opinion. I would suggest CSCS by NSCA. 2) I would take a look at potential job opportunities in your area and study the requirements of some of the positions you see posted. Often times a CEP certification will be enough, but there will be certain positions that require a Masters in addition to that credential. Cheers!

Double checking wouldn’t hurt though. You could bring in the recommended course map to your academic advisor to get them to help with course selection if you wanted! Cheers.

@@TheKoroSensei Hi Terance! I was in your exact situation just about a year ago. My advice would be to take all of the courses that have to do with exercise and cardiovascular physiology, especially ECG if it is offered. If it isn't, that is totally fine! Exercise programming is definitely a course I recommend taking before you start, which is most likely a required course. I had a really great experience. I really love working with older adults and enjoy learning about the effects exercise has on the cardiovascular system, so it made sense for me to intern at a rehab center. Some things I definitely recommend is reaching out to the person who is in charge of the program (your site supervisor) at least 3 months in advance to see what is required. For me it was vaccines that you most likely have when you are a baby, as well as a hepatis B titer test, TB test, flu shot, background test covid vaccine, and a drug screen. I also was told to wear scrubs and bring my own stethoscope. (I got my scrubs for about 20 dollars at walmart and a $20 stethoscope from amazon that works great!). When I first started my internship, the first few days they just had me shadow the exercise physiologist. They showed me how their computer system worked, etc. I also started to take the patient's blood pressures, and gradually started to give them workouts to do. I also educated the patients on why exercise is so important for their condition, etc. Don't worry! People won't except you to know what you are doing since you are an intern. All of the nurses were also super helpful and even asked me for exercise suggestions! This summer, I am starting an M.S. program in clinical exercise physiology which will take a year to complete. If this is a career that you plan on going down, I definitely would look into these types of programs as well! Hope this helps!!

Hi Luke, thank you for posting this video. This came across as I was browsing through videos for CEP. Would you specifically be able to comment on whether the pattern of MCQs is similar in CSEP-CEP compared to ACSM'S CEP? Also, would you recommend the metabolic equations handbook of ACSM? I understand that you won't be able to comment on the content of the examination. However, if you could shed some light (thru a video) on the pattern of the practical exam and duration etc..that'd be great. Thanks.
@lukemacmillan_3 жыл бұрын
Hi Parag, thanks for reaching out! MCQs should be similar in terms of formatting across the board. The Metabolic Equations handbook of ACSM could definitely prove as a useful resource. These types of questions WILL come up on testing, and you need to be able to critically think about what formulas to use when answering the questions. If you have previous schooling that taught you about metabolic equations, and answering those types of questions, you could also refer back to old notes or brush up on the content via free study resources.. like youtube haha. However, if you have the funds available, the book may be a good idea in addition to your main study resources. Good idea - I will look into getting up a video that reviews details on practical examination, as well as the theory testing. Appreciate your support.

Thanks for the comment! As a CEP we are required to understand ECG assessments (heart), administer spirometry testing (lungs), and use pulse oximeters if for example the individual has COPD.
