Just a clarification, if you want to become a neuropsychologist, usually after a Psy.D/Ph.D. program, a one-year internship is needed in neuropsychology and then depending on the state requirements 1-2 years of a postdoc in a neuropsychology clinical site. After that, it's licensure and becoming board-certified to solidify being a neuropsychologist. Hope that helps!

@@t.wagner8385 great question! It's more like to be a neuropsychologist you become a clinical psychologist first. This is the type of training in the U.S. It might be different in other countries. For example, med students have to become general medical doctors before specializing in family medicine or neurology or psychiatry, etc. So in order to become a neuropsychologist, the basic training is clinical psychology and then specializing in neuropsychology

Thanks so much. I'm glad you enjoy the channel! That's a good question. Honestly, most doctoral schools are more concerned about having research or some type of clinical experience. Most of the students in my cohort majored in other fields, as did I but had either extensive research experience or clinical skill, whether in healthcare or in the mental health field. Some schools may have prerequisite psychology classes that must be fulfilled before applying, but most schools don't require a major in psychology. So as long as you meet the prerequisite requirement for taking basic psychology courses, having a different major other than psychology should be ok for most schools.

Typically in the U.S. the masters is included in the doctorate since being a licensed independent neuropsychologist requires a doctorate and not a masters. If looking for just a masters in neuropsych I think there are programs in the U.K. and also in U.S. that do that as well but students will have to work under the license of a neuropsychologist who has a doctorate and license in clinical psychology here in U.S.. Google search should present some options for masters programs, I think it's more important to go after the research and clinical interests that you want and make sure that there is reputable accreditation in the school. Hi, thanks for the video! Do you think someone with neurobiology/neuroscience bachelors and master degrees can become a neuropsychologist? Or you have to be a psychologist from the beginning?
@philsguidetopsyd Жыл бұрын
Good questions! Just like becoming a Medical Doctor MD before specializing in internal medicine or neurology or even psychiatry, typically in the U.S., clinical psychology training programs teach students to become psychologists first, with some opportunity for neuropsychology cases and clinical practicums, but afterwards students would need further specialization and experience like in internships, post-docs, fellowships, and certification to become a qualified neuropsychologist after clinical psychology training. So yes someone with a neurobiology/neuroscience bachelors and maters degree can become a neuropsychologist they would just have to apply into clinical psychology phd/psyd programs with a neuropsych track embedded within the program and then after getting licensed as a psychologist they can get further training in neuropsychology.

Hello! Can you go to a clinical neuropsychology PhD in another state and then complete your one-two year post doc internship in another state? For example, if I study in Texas but do my post doc internships in Chicago, will I be prepared as a Chicago Licensed Neuropsychologist? Is it a bad idea to study in a state that is different from where you want to work?
@philsguidetopsyd3 жыл бұрын
Hi Angabin, great question! Yes, you could go to another state, complete your Ph.D. and do a 1-2 year post-doc internship in another state. Essentially you would just apply for licensure in that state and submit all your therapy/clinical hours that you did from your previous school and take that particular state's licensure exam. The tricky thing is that each state has different rules and regulations. For example, some states require 1500 clinical hours while others require 3000 clinical hours. So while some people could get licensed right away after finishing their internship, others will need that 1-2 year postdoc to get all their clinical hours and apply for licensure. So no matter where you move, as long as you have all your clinical hours approved from the school you graduated from, you can apply for licensure and take that state's licensure exam to become licensed. (degree in Texas but then get licensed in Chicago). The only thing that is tricky about studying in a state that is different from where you want to work is when you move to that state, you need to understand that state's requirements on licensure and make sure that the clinical hours that you did for your current state will also apply to that state or you will have to do more clinical work when moving to that state to apply for licensure.

@@philsguidetopsyd Okay great information thank you. Is the licensing exam the exam you take around your 3rd year in your PsyD and PhD? I think its called the competency exam or clinical qualifying examination. Or is this a different exam that you take after completion of the whole doctorate?

Comprehensive exams are the exams taken usually after the second year of graduate school, then clinical qualifying exams or professional qualifying exams are the exams taken during the 3rd year for most schools. Hi Phil! I just graduated with a Bachelor's degree and am looking into graduate school programs. Is it possible to get a Ph.D. in Neuroscience in replacement of a Psy.D./Ph.D. in clinical psychology and then complete the remaining training (internship, fellowship, licensing) to become a neuropsychologist? Or is it also possible to become a neuropsychologist with just a Master's in psychology?
@philsguidetopsyd3 жыл бұрын
Hi Karen! Congrats on graduating! These are great questions! For your first question, getting a Ph.D. in Neuroscience will usually lead people to become neuroscientists. Neuroscience programs are built differently than PsyD/Ph.D programs in that they lack the therapy/psychological assessment courses. This means that most neuroscience programs will prepare students to mostly work in academia or research, maybe even as medical scientists in a clinical setting. Still, they won't be able to do therapy, and they won't be able to do psychological or neuropsychological assessments because they won't receive that type of education in a Ph.D. Neuroscience program. Also, most Clinical Psychology internships and fellowships will require applicants to have the necessary experience of therapy courses and psychological assessment courses from clinical psychology programs to become a licensed psychologist or a neuropsychologist. This means that the path towards Neuroscience will be a different career path than a PsyD/Ph.D. in clinical psychology. Also, to become a licensed psychologist or a licensed neuropsychologist who can practice without supervision, a doctorate in clinical psychology or a doctorate in neuropsychology is required. The licensure requirements will not allow a Master's in psychology to practice neuropsychology or clinical psychology without supervision or label themselves as clinical psychologists/neuropsychologists. Hope that helps. Great questions!

@@philsguidetopsyd That was extremely helpful!! Thank you so much for answer my questions!! I'm quickly seeing that job qualifications for neuropsychologists can require either a Psy.D. in clinical psychology or a degree from specifically a neuropsychology school. I'm wondering whether becoming a private practice counseling therapist is still an additional career option with a degree from a neuropsychology school? Your answers have been super comprehensive and valuable to my understanding of this field. Thanks again so much! :))
@philsguidetopsyd3 жыл бұрын
Hi, of course, glad it helped! I hope I'm understanding your next question correctly. Usually those that come out of a neuropsychology school will not practice therapy. The set up of that degree will teach therapy, but neuropsychologists will be learning about neurological disorders (epilepsy, seizures, traumatic brain injuries), diagnosing these disorders, doing assessments and making treatment plans for patients that involve cognitive rehabilitation. I believe that it's possible to become a counseling therapist, but not common. What a lot of people like to do, is become clinical psychologists. Then they can do as much therapy with patients as they like and still also do a bit of neuropsychology. There's also a lot of great masters programs that you can get a masters in counseling or a masters in social work to become a private practice counseling therapist. Many charge just as much as a psychologist and have less schooling/less student loans compared to a doctoral student so that's also another great benefit!

Hi great question! That question is a little tricky to clear up. There are a lot of clinical psychology programs but few may have specific tracks for neuropsychology. What a lot of students end up doing is, choosing a school that has opportunities for their students to get neuropsychology experience through clinical rotations and practicum sites once they are accepted into a clinical psychology program. Most neuropsychologists actually become neuropsychologists by going through general clinical psychology programs, then getting experience in clinical rotations that specialize in neuropscyh programs, then apply to neuropsych internships, and go on for board certification. You might ask schools if they have opportunities for students to get those outside experiences through practicum and externship positions through grad school or if their graduates have gone on to become licensed neuropsychologists. To become certified I believe graduating from a PsyD program and doing a neuro internship are the main requirements to being board certified.
