Well I'm 51 and I just celebrated my first year as a web dev for a high tech scanner company. I worked over 30 years as a bar manager/barman in Montreal. Made the switch when covid hit. I cound't see myself working in that field until retirement so the switch was a logical decision. I love computers and I always wanted to be a programmer. And hopefully, I'll be able to work in my new field for many years. Thanks Stephan for being there, it really helped me in my transition.

Lots of wisdom here, Uncle Stef. I enjoyed a 20+ year career in I.T. 'way back during the mainframe era (COBOL, CICS, JCL, MVS TSO, EDI), have retired twice, and at 70 am learning SQL with an eye toward entering the Data Analytics arena. I don't really need the money, but retirement is overrated and I really want to feel productive again. Your videos are terrific and I really appreciate your putting your experience and knowledge out here for us. Keep up the great work!

I'm over 60 and still coding. Now for over 30 years. Its constant learning. If you keep it fun its just another day in Wonderland. Do I like everything I do in coding? No. Today it was trying to get an SVG image to work in React with JSX. Know what though I could just use the SVG previewer I installed in VS Code. Sometimes you just have to walk away or it will torment you. This business is a state of mind and picking your battles.

I'll be 40 in a few months. I spent most of my time in Actuarial office, trying to break into data science/analytics now. Going through a Data Engineering course right now but I would definitely need to work on backend and frontend development for deployment. I love to learn but sometimes it feels like I can never be skilled enough to become interesting to employers, they always demand some skill or software that I haven't done.

what I personally found was that you can easily get stuck on more basic technologies if not careful.. so for example, HTML, CSS... most people will naturally start with that. But, if you really want to be able to use them well enough to be commercial.. I mean, create full responsive website from designs made by professional designers in a webdev firm, that is one really quite challenging task! its fine making a basic web layout.. changing colours.. changing background etc etc.. but when that designer makes some complex designs with elements on top of each other, and things moving around the page specifically at certain screen sizes.. wow, that can be time consuming and difficult. Quite frankly, the problem here is that the skills to achieve that level in such a starter technology are such that it can take a significant amount of time to learn them.. and thus it can in my exp be prudent to just lean the basics.. and move on to more advanced learning like react or css frameworks before that. Because firms just won't pay for css & html boss skills. Thats just what I experienced and the takeaway I found.

I don't know, I feel like it's a no win situation. Make a lot of money, but not be happy, or barely getting by and not be happy. You can't always do what you like, because there isn't always money in it and you need to pay bills, you need to survive. Also you may get to 55 and not be able to enjoy retirement in both situations. Both situations can be miserable. Some people have to work more than 1 job to survive. What fun is that? Not everyone has millions of dollars saved up...to take a cut in pay.

The Creature From Jekyll Island is dying. Once the Banksters are gone in a few years you will make more money than you thought possible. These people won't be taking 80% of your money anymore through various methods like taxes and inflation. Taxes will go way down to a decent level. We have to make it through the next few years first. Hold on tight! Going to be a bumpy ride until we get there.

I know what you mean. With no real retirement fund at 51. Programming was a good option since I'll be able to work pass the typical retirment age and build a better nest. But obviously not everyone has the luxury of walking away from a $250k salary.

I'd imagine these days most of us won't have the luxury of retiring. I'm learning to code in my 50s so I can stay gainfully employed, vital, and useful into old age. That's the plan anyway. I already don't make a lot of money, this is my "retirement" strategy.

@@threecenters4592 same. I’m not in my 40’s. But I went to college for other things. One thing was something that I liked, but no money in it. The other I like but can’t do the shift work that comes with it. Plus it doesn’t pay enough to survive on these days.

I'm currently "graduating" by teaching myself Laravel. In the end, I opted for a udemy course. HTML, CSS etc up to PHP went well, but Laravel is very rigid in its approach as I'm not finding my way in the docs yet. I'm going to take the 4h/day to heart. Went overboard for a bit and now I keep feeling that I'm fried out, no matter how well I sleep. Chunk learning and sending resumes etc might work better but certainly worth the shot.

Then you you will level up your game over the first 3 years seeing your earning level up at the same time. Great thing about coding is that you can do it at almost any age because with experience you will be able to set your schedule ... when, what and how you would like to work.
