When I qualified as an ACCA in 1970 when I was 24 there were 4 parts to the examinations Parts 1 & 2 had 4 papers each and Parts 3 & 4 each had 5 papers all of 3 hours duration. The thing was you had to pass all of the papers at one sitting, if you failed one paper then you had to take all of the papers again. It was quite brutal, I remember one year Part 3 when the pass rate was 13%. They then changed the rule so that you could be reffered in one subject if you failed only one, however you were given one chance to take that paper again and you had to pass at a higher grade than normal. If you failed you had to take all of the papers again in that part. I knew a number of students that instead of resitting one paper would take them all again in case they failed,. It was a tough life in those days.
