Do athletes have to pay their agent with their pocket money first?

No, agents are normally paid on commission. That means they only get paid when the athlete earns money. For example, when an agent negotiates a contract with a sportswear manufacturer, they get 3-20% (depends on the sport) of the athlete’s earnings from that deal.
