How did you like the Tiffen Axis System? I saw you were in the video. Do you think it is a good system to start out with. I‘m all new to this but i don’t want to buy a low quality system i‘d have to replace too soon. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and approach. This is so helpful

I definitely recommend the axis system as a starter rig. It's actually a higher quality model compared to other starter rigs in my opinion.

at 13:00 why do you connect a monitor to a film camera, and how?, as you have a viewfinder, and the film space, thats it, its not like a digital sensor, which you can route the signal from.

I’ve only worked on projects shot on digital cinema cameras. Shooting on film can you feel the weight distribution shift as the film goes from one side to the other? How does that affect the balance?

Taylor gives an overview of this at 13:30, but a more detailed explanation is that with a Steadicam mag specific to a given camera the displacement of the load is top to bottom within the mag, which is a relatively small change to the center of gravity of the camera's overall mass and won't affect the Steadicam balance significantly. For cameras that do not offer Steadicam-specific mags and have side to side displacement such as an Arri BL, SR1/2/3 and 416, the operator will indeed experience a shift in side to side balance throughout the take which, as you can guess, was not fun and required the operator to have to "muscle" the rig back to level. This was significantly worse with 35mm vs 16mm as the load displaces further in a shorter period of time, and weighs more. Before Steadicam mags became common, various operators designed motorized worm gear assemblies to compensate the displacement, and the Master Series gimbal handle had motorized controls that would do the same.

Hi, I would suggest, Go to your local camera rental house and get familiar with the equipment. Ask the prep techs can they recommend you steadicam operators. Build relationships and get onset as much as possible.
