Thank you so much Tiff for making this video, My name is Usama Abid, and I'm a professional game developer working with Unity and Unreal Engine. I've had experience on Upwork, but lately, my freelancing journey hasn't been going as well as I'd hoped.

Thank you, Tiff, for another amazing video!! Such a good timing, too! I am starting to freelance as a web developer and getting clients and networking is something that I find most difficult to do because I don't live in a big city and online is the best option while I do better in person. Thank you again and can't wait for your next tech video!

@@TiffInTech Hi Tiff, made me smile :) As a freelancer since 2008, I'd like to add two important points. Kudos to you on understanding it so early in the game: communication and responsiveness is the key, as you have mentioned. Actually it is more important that the actual technical skills. In 9 of 10 cases the client will prefer to keep/re-hire a freelancer who is transparent and responsive vs the technical guru who is not replying chats and emails in a timely manner. "Timely manner" is subjective and varies by the company, but the golden rule in my experience is: Chats - within 1h Emails - within 4h. And one more point: The age and the skills. If chosen a freelance career, get ready beefing up the management skills and getting into management roles. I am observing all the time when the client is choosing a freelancer they subconsciously assess the seniority and younger freelancers (

@@TiffInTech Hi Tiff, you've made me smile. Thank you. Not sure why my reply was not posted, so will try again. One comment and one addition from me freelancing since 2008. 1. As you have rightly mentioned and kudos for getting it early in the game: communication and responsiveness if far more important than tech skills. There are a lot of consultants out there, but only few make effort to make the client feeling comfortable and in control. 9 of 10 times the one who replies on Teams will be extended rather than the one who can code better and faster. We are not usually building complicated stuff, so hardcore skills are not really required. It should be just "enough". My personal golden rules after almost 18 years of freelancing is: Replying chats: within 1 hour Replying emails: within 4 hours, but always on the day. 2. Roles in relation to age Sadly, but not many people want to hire a 45 years old developer. As a developer, I'm not sure why, but I guess it is mostly related with subconscious fear of manager someone more senior that yourself and fear that the developer has stuck with older technologies and is not up to date. So I personally started feeling issues finding hands-on work at around 33. Clients were gladly inviting me for team lead interviews, but not for developer roles. By the time I was like 35, not a single decent hands-on job offer came. From around 35, I was expected doing only architect and lead roles. From around 40 only project and programme management. Which is sad as I hate it, but this is what the market is dictating. I'm 42 now and I unfortunately haven't had a single hands-on contract job offer for the last 7 years. So my advise to all would be: accept it and get into leading roles naturally during your assignments, by doing a bit more than the rest, sending clear status reports and minutes and offer to coordinate. You will find those coordination and leadership points in your CV very useful when you are 30+. The only good thing that it pays better, not always, but in majority of the cases.
