I used to be super grumpy in the morning, but I found out that sleeping on an empty stomach improved the quality of my sleep. I don’t struggle waking up early now. As I went on a diet, I eat lighter or eat earlier for dinner than before. And no snacking before bed. I loved feeling so energized when I wake up☺️

As a third activity I would add make your bed so that you achieve a task straight away to start the day. I learnt this from a motivational speaker of the armed forces. Then if you have a really crappy day when nothing seems to go right you can end the day getting into a bed that is already made. Making my bed seems to kick start me into a positive frame of mind.

When my children were small I got up before them to have a peaceful hour. Now at 58 I wake at 7 have a cup of tea in bed and relax, contemplate or read until 8 or 8.30…it’s the best start to my day! Everyone to their own season. Be careful not to feel less because you don’t get up early, it is not for everyone and it is (in my opinion) overrated…being able to rest is a gift!

I can't agree more. Some people are early risers and some are night hawk. I think at the end of the day, the point is just to be effective and productive in managing your time. We all have 24 hours. It is up to each individual to allocate the time. If someone can find peaceful 3 hours in the evening vs. in the morning, why not?

I am a night person and always have been. It actually works well with my job. Most of my colleagues wake up early, so they don’t want to cover the later work. I like to stay up later, so I cover the later work. I feel like no matter what I will always be a night person. My best friend is also like that. I think some people are just different in that respect, and that’s good because we do need people who are willing to stay up and work late shifts, and we need people who are willing to get up early.

You are correct, people have different sleep patterns based on their genetically determined chronotype. Anthropologist think this may be rooted in the fact that early human tribes would want people who stayed up later, some who woke up early, with the majority awake when the sun is up.

I unwillingly turned into a night person when I became a full-time caregiver for my husband who suffered from dementia and other serious illnesses. He did not sleep at night and neither did I. After he passed away, it was hard for me to go back to my old routine of being an early riser like I was during my working years when I was up at 5am. After my husband’s passing, for the longest time I could not wake up before 12 PM. My sleep cycle was so messed up. However, slowly as the years went by, it got better and I was waking up earlier. Also, I noticed that there was something psychological preventing me from waking up early. I was facing a cold, empty house without the presence of my dear husband especially during the early hours of the mornings. Nowadays, I go to bed at 2AM and wake up at 8 AM but I’m trying to break that cycle. Sometimes I think I should get up at 6 AM but then again I get that dreaded feeling of facing the empty house. Some would say, “get a pet” but at 70 years old I don’t have the energy to care for any pet. For right now, I’m working on getting to bed a few hours earlier because I’ve noticed I fall asleep on the couch during the day. So yes, I guess I’m a night person too.

There was a Harvard study in 2014 (Evening use of light-emitting e-readers...you can look it up on the PNAS website (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences)...it found that looking at screens at night (blue light screens) makes it harder for you to go to sleep. You’ll take longer to fall asleep, even though your body may desperately need the sleep. Your circadian clock will get messed up and affect your health in a multitude of negative ways. You’ll sleep less deeply, wake less refreshed and it may take hours for you to properly wake up the next day. Reading an actual physical book, on the other hand, does the opposite. Yay! I love books :)

Excellent video. Quiet time, even if it’s just twenty mins, is such a help to start the day off right. If you make sure your nightly routine includes washing the dishes and tidying a bit, that makes getting up early even better! No walking into a messy kitchen and a sink full of dirty dishes.

Thank you so much for bringing this massage in such a clear simple manner. Your teaching is very valuable to me. Like you, I always wanted to be an early riser and having a husband who loves to wake up very early made me doubt myself and blame myself for not being as efficient as he is...love to sleep! After this video, I decided to try it. I connected to the simple massage and decided to copy paste everything you did. Today was my second morning of waking up at 06:15 (for me it's huge). Feet on the ground eye out through the window, is massive. The next great advice was to do something I enjoy. So I write in my gratitude journal, I do a tapping meditation and I exercise. I must say I am waiting for tomorrow 06:15... never thought I would say that. Besides the battle to leave bed, my fear was that I'll be tired and then impatient through out the day and I hate that, but I'm facing this limited belief and challenging it. So far so good. I am inventing myself!!! Blessings to all

I love your ethos of living intentionally it really helps when making changes knowing that you are intentionally choosing this because you want to for whatever reason that benefits you - No matter how hard the experiment we all have a choice, to work hard at it or be lacksadaisacal, the more we do something and build consistency the more we automate the new behaviour, making it routine and what we do mostly Getting up earlier doesn't come naturally for me but I also really wanted to make it that I get up early most days because I feel so much better mentally when I do & I enjoy the time in the early hours - I get up at 0545 most days now and the time flies - it is hard work to train yourself to do it but it is so worth it - I set two alarms & I use to put a post-it note on my mirror in bathroom with note of my plan for the day to help drive myself to stay up and not go back to bed - Thinking of things as an experiment is something my psychologist taught me & it really helps because it helps you to break it down and reflect on it and learn in a similar way to doing a science experiment like you may have done in school 😀 Thanks for another good clip

I did what you said and to my delight I have found I've way more energy from having less sleep! So unexpected! I think I had been oversleeping all my life. 7 hours is all I need. I used to love when I could get 10. So now no matter the day of the week I wake up at the same time without an alarm. I attack my morning with productivity. I literally have more hours in the day. What you described is how I have been implementing my new year resolutions for the last 15 years. In September, I pick one goal-habit and practice it until December. Come the new year, I make some adjustments if necessary and follow for 12 months. On the following year, I decide if I want to continue for another year or abandon. Some examples: no coffee for 5 years, eat more vegetables, follow new recipes, declutter, etc.. 1 simple goal per year and over time, I am closer to a certain ideal..still in progress! 😇 As for getting up early, it was already easy for me. I wake up naturally at 6am, no alarm clock but in bed no later than 9pm. That was an easy one for me.

1. Only 30 days (as an experiment) to begin with. 2. Feet on the ground, eyes out the windows. 3. Going to bed when tired. (Not at a certain (random) time.) 4. Find a motivation for the day (decluttering, painting, reading.. whatever you like). 5. Awake is awake! That's "enough" to begin with. 6. After 30 days: Adjust.

Great practical, sensible suggestions. Thank you, Joshua. I liked your quote from the poet John Dryden. As you spoke I was thinking of the poet Sylvia Plath who wrote some of her most famous poems early in the morning. I don't recall her exact words but Sylvia Plath mentioned "..the still, blue hour..." and something about the arrival of the milkman and before the children wake up. I'm at a stage in life in which I sleep (badly) on and off and don't feel rested in the morning. Arthritis makes getting out of bed painful. The rare times I feel rested are after a nap during the day, sometimes just after a small breakfast. HOWEVER...since I'm often awake at around 4:00 in the morning I use that time now to pray for others and I consider it be time well spent on some of the most important work of the day. Bible reading is before I'm officially out of bed. Maybe someone else in the comments remembers Elizabeth Ashley and George Peppard in the movie "The Carpetbaggers": "Jonas, we need to talk". "I don't have time". "Then you make time".

What you’re doing is referred to (now) as “Swedish Death Cleaning”. Anyone who has had to clean out a house after someone has died (especially if they were a packrat or, god forbid, hoarder), experiences that “no way am I leaving my loved ones to resent me leaving them a mess” feeling. When my dad (part pack rat, part hoarder) died, I literally had to go into therapy to understand and get over my anger at him.

How did you know to make this video now? I'm a night owl and have been for as long as I can remember. My new job is a morning job and I have to adjust to morning wake ups. One morning last week I stepped outside, the weather was mild, the sun was shining and it was glorious. I told my husband that I wished I were a morning person because the day was so clean and new. I need to try this method. At 60, I'm hoping I can learn new ways. Thank you for this.

This might sound silly, but I trained myself to be an early riser by buying "morning treats" I'd look forward to eating as soon as my alarm went off. For me, that was gummy worm flavored pre-workout powder and cookie butter on waffles (lol), but it could be anything. It was enough to get me out of bed and going at literally any hour, and eventually I realized I had it in me the whole time, and now I don't need to buy those things anymore to get myself up and at em'.

This was a great video. Thank you for sharing it! I wish I was trained early in life the value of getting started early. I encourage parents with children at home, train your children to rise early and accomplish some things. Now in my fifties, my body will no longer let me sleep late.

I never had a problem getting up early, my motivation was to get to work by 7:00. Now that I'm retired, I'm finding it hard to keep getting up early-- need to find my motivation for doing it, I guess!

Thank you!! I have always wanted to be an early riser. You are motivating me to give it a try! My 2 favourite takeaways are it's only 30 days and not permanent (feels more doable), and getting up doesn't mean I have to be cheerful (because I definitely won't be, at least not at first). Oops one more takeaway - just 2 things, feet on the ground, eyes out the window. 🙂

As someone who begins work at 7 nearly every day, I have to wake up by 5:30 to give myself a chance to get up and ready, chill out for a while, and to travel to work. On the days I work in the afternoon or am off, I woke up between 8 and 9am. I've been waking up between 7 and 8am the last few days, and I've felt great. I enjoy being up early and having that time and space to myself to do as I please. I've started to listen to my body and mind when it's telling me it's tired rather than forcing myself to stay awake till silly hours. I'm going to continue this newfound habit and hope for the best. Next habit: Stop wasting the free hours online or on my phone, begin using it for reading etc., that I enjoyed until I was sucked up into the online/ social media world as a teenager.

For me it all started with me getting to know about how to get more energy in life.... That by moving my body created more dopamine that increase my energy level....So for for years my morning motto have been " Get up, Get dressed, Get out" and it works... I get up Between 5.30 - 6 am, 7 days a week I am out walking around one hour. Doesn't matter if the sun isn't up, if the rain is pouring down or if the wind is cold..... I sm just doing it anyway. Today It's even more important to me because today I have the knowledge of being a person that is gifted with INATTENTIVE ADD (got diagnosed in September 2020, at the age of 55).... And because of that I do need to move my body a lot more than a "neurotypical" person, due to my very low dopamine level.... It is so much lower than others and need to be filled up, every other hour, so I can stay focused and energised during a whole day!🤗💖

I am and always have been a night person, but now that I have 1.5 year-old I’m finding it very difficult to change my lifestyle; she always wakes up at around 6.30, so I really need to become a morning person, because now I’m just the grumpiest of grumps. 😓

I tried it for two weeks but failed. I tried to get up at 2 AM and maintain that. After two weeks it became too hard to maintain that. Now I'm back to getting up at 6 AM. I may not be getting up early, but I still have a social life and I don't come home from work so exhausted that I sometimes conk out in my work clothes. Being an early riser wasn't all bad, I had a few hours of "me" time to work on art and other creative projects. I normally have about six hours per week of true "me" time (two on Saturday, two to three on Sunday, and a half hour here and there through the week). But it cut my time with friends in half. I kept having to cancel plans with friends that didn't take place on Saturday morning or afternoon and I missed it so much that I began asking to hang out on Sundays (which I'd normally reserved for cleaning, paying the bills, and getting other projects done and just relaxing) and shifting some of my adulting time to Saturday. For the first three days I was tired and miserable, for the next four days I felt great and I loved it, for the second week I was increasingly miserable and by the end I was too sad to work on my art projects. So I'm back to being lazy and sleeping until 6 AM. I might try it again in the future but with a far more reasonable time like 4 AM, that way I have morning time to myself but I'm not too exhausted to have a social life, at least not on Fridays and Saturdays. I'm 27 so we're not out super late anyway, I'd just be cutting away from an hour or two at the end. I really like to sleep in during my vacation week at the beach every summer. Usually until 7 AM, sometimes 7:30 or even 8 AM.

Going to bed when you're tired is sound and healthy advice - but the exact same thing applies in the morning. Let your body tell you when it's done sleeping, waking up with the use of an alarm clock is disruptive and unhealthy. Simple logic you would think.

The trick for me was to let go of the expectation to be productive first thing so I adjusted it to my only plan is to get up and drink my cup of hot chocolate and turn on the bright lights. I left the option that i could go back to bed if I wanted. The only goal was to get out of bed early. Once I get the lights on i usually wake up all the way and get pretty pumped for the day and end up being productive.

Since transitioning my life dietarily, I now beat my alarm clock up most of the time! In the past, I'd get mad if I woke up with like 5 or 10 minutes, but now, I'm like HA! I beat my clock! It's a great feeling!

Can i ask what diet you follow?
@thomashughes4859
@thomashughes4859 2 жыл бұрын
@@thatswhatisaid8908 Sure. I removed all sugar, grains, "veggie" oils, and refined foods. So, I eat only one-ingredient foods (meats, veggies, a fruit here and there, and nothing out of a box, ever). Since I eat all that I want of those foods each sitting till I am full, I rarely eat more than once per day. I know it sounds weird, but that's how it went for me. I lost 55 pounds since May 15, 2021 - and without exercise - truth! I hope that helps.

Is it necessary to do this 7 days a week for the 30 day experiment before you decide what days of the week you want to keep this routine? I really want to commit to 30 days minus Sundays! But I don't know if that wrecks the analysis? TIA
