6 weeks into my first ID role, I just rewatched this video, that kicked off my journey from K-12 educator to ID. I can say that I followed all the steps Devlin suggests with great success. It was a lot of work including 5 am mornings practicing Storyline before work or listening to videos while running and it was all worth it. There is still content I have not touched to date (Adobe XD or Mayer's principles), however most everything Devlin refers to has come my way in the last 6 months. And now, having settled into my first ID job, I am reengaging with the channel to continue learning and feed my excitement about ID. Thanks Devlin, for all you do.

Hi Susann Schecker! Thank you for posting this comment, it is very inspiring. I am currently in education (elem. SPED) and the burnout is very real. I am so glad to read your comment. I am just starting to think about ID and making my action plan to take steps to learn and transition to a new career. Did you remain in education until you were offered a position? I will have to go corporate or government, as I carry my children on my insurance. Thanks! Amy

I've been teaching scuba diving, EMS, CPR, First Aid, AED for 13 years in my business. My primary career has been in the clinical medical field and I've worked from home for 5 years (pre-COVID WFH generation!) I can't believe it took so long to discover instructional design and the huuuuge need for it across all sectors. Coupled with CV-19 and how it was instrumental in the way content is now primarily delivered, this is a huge breakout opportunity. I'm now starting my 2nd masters degree in ID next month and watching everything you've got which has been incredibly informative, really helped me to plan out my goals, next steps, etc. Your content is excellent. Thank you very much for providing so much (and for free!)

I'm almost 60. I've been a professional working teacher for 30 years, but I've been teaching in one form or another since I was 16. I've also been on the other side as a student taking professional development courses online, so I (as do many others) have an understanding of both sides of the coin. I'm planning on making this my last year in the classroom. The students are great, but it's getting harder - especially with my commute. I've wanted to work from home for a few years while being able to continue to contribute to education. ID seems to be a perfect fit. I'm very grateful to you for making these materials available to give us a head start.

@@DevlinPeckYT Appreciate the reply and encouragement. I've started watching your videos in order - starting with this one. I watched the first 3 so far. A lot of this is very familiar. I've joined Slack, but not a whole lot to say there yet. Since we are getting updated/new materials this year, my idea is to use having to upgrade my courses as a way to practice using the methods/techniques in the videos and build a beginning portfolio. I'm also known in school as the one who finds new programs and hacks for doing things better. Tbh I just stumble across most of this stuff, but I have a few go to channels that I check regularly. I come to ID in the same way I have come to most of my "topside gigs". I am a musician, playing many popular styles with a degree in Theory and Composition. Given the income variances in music, I have always had a foot in my day job. Starting as a grant writer (B.A. in Eng Lit- another great career move), I started doing client interface design for a software program on a grant that I wrote and was funded. Eventually, I became the program expert and wrote many training pieces in Adobe Captivate. I found the process very rewarding, but didn't know there was a field related to it. Then something came into my email of a job interest looking for an ID. After looking at what the company wanted, I knew that I could do the job, but my skills were dated and being self=taught, full of gaps. I can't tell you how much your video has impacted my world. Thank you, thank you, thank you. - Butch

I was an Instructional Designer in San Francisco back in 2000 when it was new and nobody knew what it was. Then there was 911 and the attendance of the school I was working for dropped, and they let most the designers go in order to save money, and ended up getting a plug and play platform (Prometheus then eCollege). The next year (2002) the designers were scaled back again and I was also laid off. Instead of seeking further employment in the field I decided to travel. Maybe not the best career move, but I had an interesting life as a result. Every now and then I'd apply for an instructional design job, but as there is more formal training now and I didn't have a degree in it, I was eliminated in the first or second round of interviews. Your video was my first good look at what it is going to require to get back in the game. The salary it seems, adjusting for inflation, hasn't changed much. Since I haven't paid off the loan for my initial Master's in education I'm not going to get a second Master's in it. Not at that salary level anyway. It was good to hear that you don't really have to. After Covid I think the field will grow, but I also think that with the plethora of tools available now a lot of people, schools, and companies are just going to do it alone without a team of Instructional Designers like back in the day. Maybe I'm wrong but either way I hope to get enough understanding of what is happening now to re-enter as an independent consultant and help schools and businesses with their online learning implementation or their RFP rather than as an Instructional Designer per se. But your video has given me a road map to follow to update my skill set and understanding of what it means now to be an Instructional Designer. So thanks.

I love a list with bullet points and action items, thank you! I'm 2 months into self-teaching all about ID and eLearning. About 50% of my time spent on videos, podcasts, books, etc. is a combination of other field experts, authors, podcasters, etc and 50% is now by way of Devlin Peck. As I take notes, I mark a page or something I jot down "(DP)", so I can recall the source.

I’m so glad to find this video! I had no idea what to call ID but I knew I was interested in it. Former classroom teacher, currently working as faculty in higher ed. I’ve been challenging myself to make my online content more interactive. Now to figure out how to apply those skills into ID as a side gig and then maybe even full time? The flexible of working fully remote without a teaching load for more money is very tempting!
@DevlinPeckYT3 жыл бұрын
I’m glad that you found it, too! It does sound like ID is exactly what you’re going for. And yes, there are plenty of teachers who are tempted by the fully remote job, better work-life balance (by a lot), and higher salaries 😃. Instructional design is a great career for all of the above!

@@kristinmoney7321 There are plenty of remote instructional design jobs that are high-paying, but you will need a portfolio that shows off the in-demand skills. This is excellent. I think I've watched some of these a few times and usually forget to like. The lessons and the references have taken a lot of confusion out of a lot of different scatterbrained interests. Just seeing the stuff that Articulate put together was nice...to see it organized in one place. The lessons so far are the lessons that I am interested in. Good guess.
