Every like and comment tells KZbin to show this to more people, so please jump in. If you really, really like this content and want to support me you can donate at Kofi. I have just set it up at: ko-fi.com/lizchadertonartist
Urban sketching is incredibly popular. It's all about connecting with the place you are in. But how do you get started? I thought I would share my process in this film. It's all about trying to capture lots of information quickly in case it rains, you freeze to death or someone parks a car in the way.
Thanks to my neighbour (Eddie) for letting me sketch their house.
I really enjoy quick sketches and it is just not the same if you work from a photo in the studio. So this is a first for me, I am doing an outside broadcast.
Urban Sketching is reportage - it's drawing or painting on location in the cities, towns, or villages that you live in and travel to. You are capturing a moment in time in a unique way. I saw this lovely quote from Roisin Cure "The essence of an urban sketch is that its primary function is not to be beautiful, but to capture what it feels like to be human. This could be in a man-made building, the hand of man on the landscape, or human beings in action, wherever they are or whatever they are doing."
In this film I thought it would be fun to show you my sketching process on location. It turns out that filming yourself drawing outside is really hard! The trouble is that you cannot check if everything is on camera once you are sitting down. Luckily it was. I did another one and only got half the drawing....
If you want to have a go at this house, I will put a picture on the community tab on this channel. I would love to see what you do.
Don't forget I run a Facebook group which is a great place to meet other artists, get tips and to share your work. You can join here: / watercolourstudiowithl...
If you are interested in learning more about line and wash, I have a really comprehensive course over at www.lizchadertonstudio.co.uk/... and my book Line and Wash Painting is available from The Crowood Press and online book shops worldwide.
Of course you can use whatever materials you like to sketch with, but pen and watercolour are very popular, because of the speed you can work at and also that the kit is light and portable, so that you can do a quick sketch while waiting in the car or sitting drinking a coffee. Give it a go and you will see the world in a different light.
Going out sketching on your own can be intimidating. So maybe sitting in a coffee shop is a good place to start and having your back to a wall so no one can look over your shoulder, also helps! Most people are just impressed you are doing it. If they are a painter, they will be supportive and if they aren't an artist, well they will wish they were. So try not to care what people think! There are urban sketch groups around the world, usually organised through Facebook, so there's safety in numbers and perhaps you could go out with them - just search your local area.

I drew along and realised for the first time, that the elements I need to work on are confidence, patience, and relaxation! I often stop a picture very early on because I feel it's already gone wrong, whereas watching this process unfold, I realised it maybe just needed time. Great demonstration and very helpful!

all sketches and paintings go through a mucky/ ugly phase. It’s worth pushing through. And confidence, relaxation and patience are brilliant. I’d add enjoyment. even if it won’t hang in a gallery, did you enjoy the process?

Made me chuckle when you said "I'm not putting in every brick". About 40 years ago in art class at school i drew the house opposite from where i live. I put in every brick! My art teacher said, somewhat surprised, "you put in every brick!" 😂

This is brilliant! I've always wanted to learn how to do urban sketches as I'm fascinated with the shape of buildings. However, I'm abysmal at drawing, especially perspective. I've decided to just begin to draw and do it badly until I do it better! Your videos are fun, easy to follow, not overwhelming and inspiring!

Honestly drawing is a muscle which needs to be trained. The more you do, the better it gets. And perfection is over rated. Todays film is the other half of this house, but done from a photo.

I like your attitude! One great piece of advice I have to keep bringing to mind is don’t think you’re trying to draw a “flower”, “house”, “eye” or whatever but concentrate on the shape/shadow etc. Even try drawing your reference picture upside down!

Love your work - I’m just getting into urban sketching. This is going to be so helpful❤ As a fellow KZbinr you might appreciate the advice on how to improve your audio - one - you’re going to need a ‘dead cat mic cover’ although it sounds from the lack of wind popping as if you might actually have one of those and two - you might want to take your audio track into something like audacity and actively sample the traffic noise and then remove that. It can really help, with extraneous noise - If you knew all that or it wasn’t helpful please ignore. 😊

Thank you so much for the tips. I did have a fluffy dog thing and was disappointed it didn’t seem to do much. The Audacity removal is possibly beyond my technical competence! I keep it all simple, I film on my iPad and edit on iMovies. I will look into it 😳. The audio on this annoyed me so much, I’ve not done it again!

Oh! That was the charm! Speaking for me, people want to edit out life. I've notice many who do video's apologize for everything. I don't make video's but it makes me sad if viewers are giving the person who is graciously giving a FREE tutorial. I can understand if we couldn't hear you or quality wasn't good but otherwise, personally, I'm just grateful to you for sharing your talent and advice. Thank you again!

It was so inspiring to watch you sketch and paint outdoors that I feel that I want to do the same. However, I was wondering, if there's no suitable place to sit, how shall I hold my sketchbook? I'm unable to hold it steady enough to draw. Any suggestions? I couldn't figure out how you did it in this video.
@LizChadertonArt

You really do need something to rest on! I was sitting and had a larger book on my knee with my A5 sketchbook on top. If I had to stand, I would rest the book on a wall or bollard of something. Holding a book unsupported is not great for anything over a 3 minute sketch. I always recommend a hard back sketch book, for just this reason.

Hi Liz. Thanks for posting this video. A few thoughts from me… I like the style of these paintings. It's something I can aspire to. I see you're still doing that Ian Fenelly thing of making buildings higher at the top than at the bottom, which I like. I've been doing stuff like this on watercolour paper. I've been using hot pressed (smooth) paper as I thought it would be kinder to the pens. If anyone reading this is thinking of doing the same, I'd advise them to think again. The paint just seems to float on top of this paper and not soak in. I get none of the exciting things that watercolour normally does. I'll be switching to cold pressed at some point. I have, what, eight of those pens in the video, including the brush pen. I like to use several pens in my starting drawing. Thicker pens for important lines and closest edges, thinner pens for edges that are further away and for fine details like individual tiles and bricks. And I like to use the brush pen to add some really dark blacks before painting - maybe shadowy bits below roof edges and window sills, just to add a bit of depth. In terms of travelling light, my solution is to leave the paints at home and just take the pens. I tend to do the drawings in batches of three, then head home to paint them. And finally one thing I do that others won't want to follow. I have a set of 22 half pans that never sees any action and that I really need to use at some point. If I just used them for urban sketching, some colours would run out much faster than others. So, to make sure they all get used, I've built a spreadsheet to choose three random colours from that set for each painting. There are a few restrictions in this choices though: colours are sorted into seven groups (red, yellow, blue, orange, violet, green, brown) with a maximum of one colour allowed to be picked from each group and with only certain triads of groups being allowed. I have to be disciplined and accept the computer's choice every time (no redraws!). It adds an element of jeopardy to things and doesn't always work, but when it does it's great. My dash and splashes can be seen here artisticactuary.blogspot.com/search/label/Dash%20%26%20Splash. I'm nowhere near your league yet.

Hi Steve, thanks for the message. I am a huge fan of Ian Fennelly’s work, indeed the idea of using brush pens for tone without adding water is his, for sure. I think I’ve always enjoyed playing with colour and perspective. it brings buildings to life, don’t you think? I find hot press annoying to work on. if you are a detailed ink person, it is good, but paint skids around and takes longer to dry, so it is not for me. Your random colour generator is intriguing! I would usually say limit your palette to 5 or 6 colours in any painting, but that takes it to a new level! I had a look at your blog. what a great collection! what’s your favourite triad so far? keep up the brilliant work!

I’ve only recently discovered Ian Fennelly and love the fun aspect to his work. I have been inspired by him to sketch old rusty trucks and have learnt a lot. I don’t yet have any of the Tombow brush pens but will definitely be getting some as I can see how useful they are for this type of work.

@@elainetyrrell4669 Ian's work is fab and he is so fast!! Tombow's are super for this type of work. If they are a bit expensive check out the WHSmith version (if you are in the UK) - they are a third the price. It's important they are water soluble so they blend with your watercolour rather than being permanent.
