Hands on skills you don't get from a book. Look not at his sandals or lack of gloves, but what he can do with basic fixtures and bar stock. And yes, 5/8 bar stock can be easily bent in small angular increments with a simple lever.

Very true - when I went to welding school (1972), I was taught that a welder was a welding machine, while a person that welded was a weldor. At one point, I applied for a job at a sawmill, and wrote weldor as the desired position - the person taking my application changed it to "welder", so he assumed I was a dummie. I would have corrected him, but I really needed the job. Unfortunately, misspelled words and misused terminology (such as "could care less" instead of "couldn't care less") have become accepted, and we just have to grit our teeth and deal with it.

Pipe being hollow, may collapse...for that you would need a conduit/guide arrangement.

It depends on the type of steel the bar is made from...obviously if he was bending 4340...it would be a no go, but very mild steel 1018 or 1020 it can be done, like what re-bar is made from.........we have a basic bar bender here at the school I teach at and it is possible...depends on how the bender is anchored..and how you grab the bar. Why are you so hard on this guy?
