Hey fella, great job and god only knows why some of the comments seem overly critical. There are a few ways to carry that type of job off and I totally appreciate your approach. My dad is in his 60 ' and was a saw doctor then a joiner/builder all his days and that's the kind of challenge that I would watch him tackle and the precision and attention to detail he put in blew me away. Allthough he is now retired, he still project manages me whenever I'm doing work to my home and the tricks he knows on how to manipulate wood has been great to learn. There's not a straight wall in my old house to take any references from but everything is bang plumb on the eye and im proud to say it was my old man that done it and I'd be happy to have you in on any work I needed. Peace out.

Some People don't realize how much additional work you have to put in until you can upload the finished video. And you did a very good job on that too. (Have seen so much crap already) So thumbs up !

+Geek Street I would agree people are way too negative over this… But I think the main reason is because it's a (how-to video) which Intel's you're showing people how to do it properly. It's not bad work, but I wouldn't let it pass if I was paying you for it. The top profile isn't even, and the flat face on the bottom is choppy you can see where the kerf cuts are.

great job! sure there really are pros who can do the 3 piece aka the right way.lol but most of these people obviously are not in the field nor come across and handle thousands of these. I deal with these Dailey, and rarly do I see one done really nice. they cover mistakes with caulk n paint and beak a lot. Also i feel these way is easier for a less skilled carpenter. it's a little choppy but I would actually take this over most I see. I would maybe do it in shorter segments tho if possible. Either way, thank 2. awesome idea appreciate your time and sharing. don't listen to the negative people, they will always hate. it's not for them anyway. again thanks from all those who do appreciate you teaching a different technique

Who the fk said to put mdf into water to bend it? Never put mdf near water. Like the determination this guy has and its clear to see he isn't a Carpenter Joiner. Be careful with that saw, if you get kickback as the saw isn't fixed to a bench it will jump and you'll get a sore one. Anyway, good luck on the DIY, you do it your way and others do it their way.

People are complaining about how you filled and sanded the cuts, but that area looks fine to my eyes, except, I would have gone over the border between the wall and the board where it curves around the corner, maybe with a fine saw blade, to get it back to the 90 degree angle you can see on the straight areas. Also, where the bent section meets the other sections, I'd be inclined to do something (biscuits, dowels, finger-joint or just opposite 45 degree cuts) to align them better. Would a solvent-based filler have been better for the long run? Maybe, only time will tell, but I don't see any signs that the MDF is warping or falling apart. But I doubt cutting it up into little triangular pieces and gluing them would have produced better results than this without even more sanding, or very exacting (ie. expensive) work, the bends in the flat area of the board wold have been much more pronounced that way than they are here.
@pcno2832
@pcno2832 9 жыл бұрын
+No Name One other thing that might have cut the amount of filling and sanding needed would have been a blade with triangular or arrow-shaped (rather than rectangular teeth), though I don't know if they make one for a chop saw.

A couple of points, some have been covered. The word should be kerf as kef means "a state of drowsy contentment, especially from the use of a narcotic." As has been mentioned a smooth push to the back is the better way to use the saw and would have left a smoother finish. Also if you added a sacrificial peace to the fence you could have gone all the way through in one pass and not had to turn the skirting round The chop move chop leaves some parts with more material and makes the unevenness more pronounced

You only need to mark the outer boundaries, the rest is a waste of time. The tighter you need to bend, the closer together you make the relief cuts, not wider cuts. then you wont end up with the ugly creases on the front of the facing. Also, that radial miter saw you are using, Extend it towards yourself, lower down then slide to the back in one even cut instead of chopping into the piece over and over. Its easier on you and the equipment, saving loads of time and giving a nice even clean relief

That's a lot of work for a subpar outcome. You guys don't have rubber products? Another sure fire method it to split the angles... 1/2 of 45 degrees is 22.5 half that.is 11.1/4. Then keep halving the angle untill you get approximately 3 degrees. At that point you start putting the pieces together and end up with a perfect radius in a lot less time and effort. I appreciate the old school method and the time you took to make the video and I mean no disrespect, but there are two types of folks watching this video.... The pro, which knows not to waste time on this method,and the DYI homeowner that has little idea what's going on, and will spend a half a day installing and another half day prepping... And still not get rid of the square look on the bottom of the base..you basically took a 5 minute project and turned it into a full day nightmare. Just order a piece of rubber baseboard that will match your existing base. A box with a 12 foot roll cost about 20 dollars. Promise you won't regret..... Sorry for the run-on paragraph, keyboard is having issues.

In the UK we don't tend to use synthetic products as all our buildings are very old so we match into the existing. A lot of our buildings are protected by a governing body called "heritage". Where we can not alter its original state/look. I know what you're saying though, in the sates/North America you use a lot of composite and "fake" products for speed and longevity. Unfortunately, that's not possible here as we add/restore to things built 100's of years before america was even a country.

nice video, but your description is missing an "R", it is actually a "Kerf Cut". Kerf referring to the width of the teeth on the blade. Also if you use a thinner blade, smaller "kerf", it will allow you to make more cuts in closer proximity and providing you don't make those cuts too deep, like you did here, you will get a smoother more rounded bend. And with a thinner blade and more cuts, and cut the right way, the slots will actually close up when you bend the stock eliminating the need for excess filler. If done properly no filler will be needed at all. And the entire board should be stuck down, especially the fingers at the top. It is also mentioned somewhere below, but it is always good practice to miter the ends of the board where it will be joined to another. I'm not judging what you are doing here, but this is more for other people watching that this technique can be done to greater effect.

The lines don't match up on the floor or on the top. And the whole thing is not smooth...even the wall portion that you put the filler on. And you used a water based drywall mud for the filler. Water + MDF is a truly bad idea. Not to mention the strength of that corner is questionable. One good hit from moving furniture or a kick will pop a seam. I appreciate the effort and the video. But come on mate, you can't be happy with this. I came here to see if there was an easier way than what I was about to do. My way is to cut small pieces and fit them in one at a time with brad nails and top with wood filler. It is more work than your method; however, the finish is flawless.

Your mitre saw is a sliding miter saw... so you didn't need to turn the board or use a tablesaw as you suggested was the reason for needing to turn. The reason I point this out is for anyone reading I believe that is an indicator that this isn't the most experienced tutorial. I appreciate the effort but that finished product doesn't look professional there are some hard straight lines vertically where the bends are and I am certain most people would have a problem with it. I don't want to keep going on, my recommendation is to look elsewhere for kerf cut examples.

bro that angle is a 22.5 it should have a little insert on the corner of the wall. meaning right where the wall starts curving. so for the wrap around there are 3 pieces of baseboard. this is a 22.5 angle s

No offense, but buying wood trim and boiling it moments before bending to the curved corner would give much better results.There are obvious lines where then cuts were made that can never be sanded out with this method.

...... or just use flex mould which is available by the foot affordably, can be installed in a mere fraction of the time, and looks 100 times better. I've never seen anyone try to do it this way, it's insanity. Also - always mitre splices. If it's going to be painted you shouldn't see joints at all after.

If you are going to use filler, then you should have sacrificed the upper section of the moulding totally, leaving just the bottom sectioned removed all the MDF backing to almost the plasticiser front face. Then you could have it bend cleanly around the corner. Make a reverse template of a piece of the moulding with car body filler, and a wipe of vaseline to enable it to detach, and you can then use this to form the user section, but you need something a little better and finer than ordinary filler - probably plaster of paris or similar fine particle filler. Looking at the property, it strikes me as a project where finish is important. If somebody has gone to the trouble and extra expense of curved walls, then curved skirting should at least match.

good effort but I think your recesses were slightly to deep hence the flat spotting around the face .

If you came to my house and tried to charge me for that work, I'd ask you politely to leave my house. I'd then immediately tell you that had best do it in the next 10 seconds or you'd be staring at the barrel end of an 18 gauge. And then I'd start counting. Hashtag, justsayin

To all you guys leaving negative comments. I knew he wasn't a carpenter as soon as I saw the tape measure and the drop saw .and it's obvious he is not a good painter either ...A good painter could have made that look good . He should have : mitred both ends a longer piece of skirting not mark at the centre every 6mm instead of 10mm. Not a poor as some might think ( assuming it's not his trade ) they'd murder you where I work though.

Hmmm. Not a great job I'm afraid. Also straight butt joints for the following boards really not a good idea....should mitred in. You've got the gear to do it properly!

I do KERF some bends but this is not a situation for kerfing. Its too tight of a bend and you had breakage occur. For all that time spent and the finished look being unprofessional looking I would have went a different route. Why not just glue and tape up 20 small, lightly mitered pieces together? No giant holes to fill, no bondo, and clean looking lines. Flex mold would be ideal.
