Miles, This method ROCKS. I'm still working on rooting my initial cuttings. I tapped the thumbs up button to feed the algorithm monsters.

Just ran across your channel i just started with fig trees this year im going to try this im in middle tn how long do i need. To leave it before i cut it and how often do you water it
@MilesFig5 ай бұрын
I'm leaving mine for 60 and then checking them and cutting the well rooted ones to take to a big fig gathering In north Carolina. I water them just like any other potted only.slightly less just make sure your medium is well draining

I will adapt your approach. Almost all of my 200+ figs are in 5-gal buckets, the biggest I can handle, as I have to store mine, stacked 3 or more high, in grow tents in my garage all winter, in Zone 6A. Accordingly, I cannot use such large air layering pots, to air layer the low branches. I guess I will use just cut-off 1 liter seltzer water bottles, which should fit inside those 5-gal buckets OK. I have air layered many with those balls, using coco peat medium, but they do not work as well on horizontal, low branches, which I need to remove anyway, in order to maximize stacking of buckets for winter. By the way, most of my "pots" are double-bucket "SIP" set ups, almost entirely using food-grade buckets bought from Walmart bakeries, after they empty the icing from them. Best of luck with your KZbins, too! I just subscribed.😁

Hey fantastic. I remember hearing about using Gallon jugs hanging on grape vine wire trellis, they would cut a hole, feed the vine through and then back fill with soil and just wait for it to fill with roots. I wish you tons of success. With a clear bottle maybe consider covering with foil to keep sun out.

Where and when will the figapalooza take place? Is there a web site for the event?

Do you use any hormones? And does this work on other trees/shrubs? Im definitely subscribing to your channel.
@MilesFig5 ай бұрын
Thanks for subscribing! I haven't used hormone on any of these this year and I'm having great success. Some cuttings I took I have used power hormone and gel for some also. Yes this method works for lots and lots of other trees and shrubs. The list is too long but a simple Google search about which tree or shrubs you are interested in should tell you

Ficus carica. Use Google and type this in.

I tried some air layers using those balls you buy off Amazon. They are on my fig tree but I did have some success air layering a pear tree. I think I need a better growing medium for them. I just used some potting soil and it dried out some and got harder. I’m thinking peat moss would work better. Now I need information on figapalooza!!

As for the medium drying out, some people would wrap that ball in saran wrap or plastic to keep the humidity up or else make sure to add water

So you don’t do incremental up potting. From cutting to 15 gal might be the way to go but that requires a lot of soil to fill those pots.
@MilesFig6 ай бұрын
I put it about a third of the bottom of that pot is filled with wood chips and then any other debris and then I fill it up with good soil but yes you're right it still takes a lot of soil and I do a little bit of incremental on potty from a fig pop to a 4x9 tree pot then to the 15 gallon because you will be amazed at how fast the roots grow and fill up one of those three gallon pots and then you're stuck watering it constantly
