Even after over 20 years of binding cracks in bamboo it still remains one of the more challenging steps in the shop! I hope this helps people

Great demonstration - I've never seen how that's done. Will the glue/epoxy keep the binding from sliding down the tube?

Hi Markus! It's mostly to make them more resilient against abrasion and other forms of wear and tear. I used to think that it also helped prevent any theoretical "creeping". However, I've had some unsealed bindings on some shakuhachi here for ages with no issues in terms of performance.

Assuming the same method would work with binding a crack on a shinobue, would this method work for a longer/thicker crack?

Definitely! The locking pliers might be strong enough to further crack thinner bamboo though! I would be very careful or use your hands instead

At about 39 seconds, you seem to skip the part where we place the line under the rubber band. It’s not really clear. It also looks like you make the first loop towards one end of the Bamboo but then the rest of the loops go the opposite way. Is this accurate? I think this video would be a lot better if you would simply speak the part, and then we could look at the translation of text.
