How to Bivy in Winter - Tips for winter nights in the outdoors

If you want to sleep outside in winter, there are some things to keep in mind. First of all it is important to know, that the cold can be super dangerous. In summer a night can make you unkomfortable. But in winter a cold night can kill you. So make sure to get some experience and be careful.
With this video I want to share some tips for sleeping in the outdoors in a European winter environment. This is not about sleeping in war or in a conflict zone. This video is more about advanced bushcraft or some kind of camping. But of course you can use some of these tips for your nights in different conditions.

In the Norwegian army we put the boots under our knees inside the bivy bag, which transfer passive heat from your body preventing them from freezing.

@Łukasz Kolasiński same principle at work, however my boots aren't soft enough for me to get a good night of sleep on, i much prefer my pants, jacket and midlayer for a pillow.

Any recommendations for hiking in the south of Norway? Want to go hiking in April with two mates. Woods and hills, doesn’t matter

@@jakos.6878 what kind of hike do you want? Hammock, tent or cabin. Mountain, fjords, woods and hills. The interior mountains of southern Norway are still clad in snow during April and will require ski's but the unmanned cabin system allows you to leave the tent and sleeping bag at home. Here there are many routes options with the cabin system being trust based and quite cheap, a bunk would cost you 15$ or so. In the fjord and hills closer to the coast anything goes, hammocks, tents or if the weather permits sleeping under the stars. Here also you have the same unmanned cabin system with the same low prices for a bunk. A tarp and a bivy or a hammock is optimal for the forested hillsides of a fjord or the rolling hills at the root of the mountains and its a mild temperature during April. Give me some specifics and i'll give you some clues on nice routes and hikes.

@@treninjector2245 Thank you man, based on what you said, we will go a bit lower to the fjords and treesides. We thought about Bivybags and Hammocks too, surely combined with a tarp. I know it’s still a bit cold in April, but we wanted to as minimalistic as possible, partially with our military equipment.

I did my cold weather training in Alaska! We learned how to build a dugout type of igloo, but we we’re warned that they can collapse on top of you and snow is just like concrete & you can get trapped inside! So, they recommended basically what your doing with a foxhole about 3’ deep & wide by around 6’-7’ long with a mat on the bottom under your sleeping bag, then we added a white tarp over us and always slept on our stomachs, so we could lookout in the direction an enemy might approach From as a unit we arranged our selves in a what we called a flower with our backs to each other so no one could ever sneak up on us! Then used our throat mics and click sounds to communicate with each other! If we saw a potential contact!

Put your boots in a dry bag in your bag. If you must leave them outside put 12 hour toe warmer inside the boots. Back in the 50's we actually used hot water bottles to help keep us warm and have drinkable water fit the next day.

You might consider cutting the corners off of your foam sleeping pad to save a bit of space/weight. You could cut the perimeter of it, tapering it into a mummy bag shape to save even more space/weight.

It looks very cold there, here in Belgium is no snow and 9 degrees haha better sleep here outside. Very useful as always. Big fan of you 👍

I like using Klymit insulated air mattress with a quality closed cell foam pad. Air mattress provides tons of comfort and the pad insulation. If you get a hole in the mattress you still have your warm layer.

One of my adventures was walking up and down the North Cape. Used a Carinthia bivybag conbined with a tarp. Was important to keep the bivy dry as goretex doesn't really work when frozen. And as always harsh weather conditions...meaning lots of rain/snow/freezing temperatures. Anyway sleeping bags become like envelopes when moist for weeks😎, no isolation left so to say...but as always one day it will be dry again.

I love my bivy bag I got for my sleep system, was a def game changer. I will add I dont sleep in the same socks I wore during the day just because if my feet do sweat Ill be cold all night. I could sleep completely naked and be fine as long as I have socks on my feet.

In order to prevent condensation from respiration i will use my jacket as a buffer between the outside cold air and the inside of my bag by placing the jacket in a way that it partially covers my face and leaves a small opening for fresh air. I have slept out in the elements in below 0 F in the mountains of Colorado for a week at a time with much comfort. When using a truck to travel I carry two sleep systems and use a down mummy bag of the military style as my "base" bag. I leave it unzipped and install my three layer synthetic bag and bivy bag inside this bag and it actually gets hot if I have no wind or moisture. This system is for extreme conditions only.

Very interesting video. Are there any ways to dry wet items in these conditions without making a huge fire? Big fire is asking to get caught in Germany so I don't do it. I recently walked the first 100km of the West Weg while it was snowing. The first two nights where OK but the next two where above 1000 meters with very low clouds. I ended up with water between my sleeping bag and ground insulation so the bottom part of my sleeping bag was wet. The final night was before Hornisgrinde with under 50 meters of visibility. I stopped the tour the next morning because I could not get my things dry again. It was either wet or frozen. Still a good experience. For emergencies I always carry two HeatPaxx. These are Chemical body warmers.

The bedding for the ground is called a bed roll or sleeping mat. Definately use one. It gets very cold if you dont. Last resort, dig down to the forest floor and use the pine needles or leaves.

How would you use the emergency bivy bag? inside the sleeping bag or try to put it around? And, if you would use it as an emergency option in its own, would you leave all your clothes on inside? (probably a hard question because its one of these items a lot of people carry with them but no one ever had to use it). So question to all as well.

The emergency bivy bag should be around the sleeping bag. It's meant to protect from snow, Rain and wind but not from the cold. If you use it as an emergency option on it's own leave your clothes on and If you have spare clothes in your backbag but them in the bivy bag as isolation layer.
