This is the right way to do it as described in the bentley manual cap closed, bleeder closed... I did this procedure after i replaced my upper radiator hose that cracked open and spilled 6L of coolant. I lost a little bit of coolant after the test drive so I ran it again and noticed a pinhole leak in my expansion tank hose. So this is a great procedure to not only test the water pump (if you hear it whirring and coolant circulate its good), but also to pressurize the coolant system and check for pinhole leaks that you might not see otherwise. If you have an older bmw 100k+ miles 2009 I recommend you replace the upper/lower radiator hoses, coolant hoses. Even though the rubber exterior looked great the plastic connectors inside melted/corroded and lost the seal.

Also be sure to always use the bmw specified coolant. Regular coolant deteriorates the hoses.

I changed my pump/thermostat (N55, 135i) yesterday and need to bleed the system. However, this video or the video from BavAuto never mentioned to take it out of Auto for the HVAC. I followed the procedure with the Auto left on, temp set to 84 and fan speed set to low and pressed the throttle pedal for 10 seconds. It was my first time running through this procedure so I left it running for 12 minutes but the pump never cycled on/off. In addition the engine fan started to blow on super high speed. I disconnected the engine fan but left the rest as is. I Googled for max engine fan during bleed but the articles I found were related to a bad water pump. Well, I just changed my pump so I doubt that was it but you never know if they sent a bad part. So I had to try it again and see if it will do it again. But this time, I took it off Auto and repeated the rest of the steps. Well, it worked after I took it out of Auto. The pump ran and cycled on/off etc. However, after about 3 or so minutes of cycling it stopped for close to a minute and I started to get worried. The previous stops was never that long and I started to wonder, is it suppose to stop that long???? I ended up leaving it as is and it started it up again. Point is...Once it starts to cycle, leave it and let it do its thing. But thank you for ALL the videos you've posted.

@@isaiasbarriga1622 yeah not true. All my maintenance is up to date. The problem is that it has a ton of problems that go bad that just shouldn't at low miles. The water pump goes bad, oil pan gasket, oil filter housing gasket, they had 6 recalls come out for just the 3 series e90. Its poorly built. The fucking door handles melted on my passenger side.

Hi Mr. Fanatic, loving your videos, they have helped me understand the n54 engine from basic to advance, I have been using my 135i since it was 85k now is about 90k, so i was doing oil changing, oil housing and coolant new gaskets, i also took apart the whole front including oil & coolant radiators, headlights etc, to be able too clean messy old and power steering fluid mess caused by previous owner, i am stuck in the coolant part: 1- I want to drain the remaining old coolant from engine block and make sure there is nothing left, is there a coolant bolt in the n54 block? 2- Do You think I drained all coolant since i unmounted the radiator and host from coolant pump? 3- Should i do a bleed with distilled water instead? Thanks in advanced for your time, your videos are of great inspiration...Best!!!

BMW Fanatic So question, if the system is closed then how does the aire get out? Every other car I have ever worked on to bleed the air out I HAD to have a way for the air to escape: Like unscrew the cap, a bleeder valve or something? ? On my wife's VW I had to remove the heater hose, the highest place for the air to get trapped. This is the first BMW that I have owned, I have avoided them because they have to many ISSUES but my wife wanted it and her old VW Golf just turned 200k.

I love everyday owning my 135i, but everyday i also wonder when it will break. When will my turbos go bad, when does my hpfp take a dump. When does my water pump go bad. Will i have to buy injectors, will my belt break and engine eat it. Do i love it or do i hate it. Lol

BMW Fanatic One more Q please? I cannot tell IF the electric water pump is running or not? I did it exacly like you did, 3 times and never heard it at all. Since I did not hear it the first two times it only ran 3-4 minutes. The third time I let it run the full 12 minutes but the level did not change at all We bought it used in October and of course had NO TROUBLE until the weather started heating up. It heated up yesterday on my wife. I let it cool, filled it up and it overheated again today. So I tried your procedure, hope it works but when there is no sound of the pump running and the level did not change it am UNCERTAIN...

With mine (09 x-5 ) I have to insert the key fob. With my foot OFF of the the break I press the button to start. The car wont start but all the gadgets come on including the heater.

I been sorting out coolant leaks due to the quick disconnect o rings and every time I cycle on the bleeding process the pump stays running and doesn't cycle off and on like everyone else. He didnt get the question. Yes replace your fluid if it got a fair amount if miles on it. Grab a thing of bmw coolant from BMW it has to be from there. Probably 28 bucks for a jug. Mix it 50/50 with distilled water (yes it has to be distilled) take off the bleeder screw on reservoir tank and fill the reservior till it almost pours out the bleeder screw hole. Re screw in the thing and run his proceedure. You can find the drain plug on the radiator and empty coolant system from there. You will know it worked correctly when you see the level of coolant has dropped down

kevin p trapped air in the system will cause it to overheat/run into cooling issues. Once you replace a coolant related part, you'll lose about half of your coolant. That right there will have some air in the system, which is why this process comes into play 😀

Hello, After replacing the 2 famous gaskets at the oil filter house, and replacing the coolant reservoir,,,, Inside the car the left side won't heat, cold air comes out. and at the right side it's warm.... I did this procedure about 4 times.

That's an issue with the climate control not your cooling system...

@@Whosoever141 Well after some research found out that theres a leak in the head gasket (6th cylinder inside) but after the headgasket was changed there was no result.. And yep... probably had to do with the climate control.. But the custommer claims the problem wasnt there before changing the gaskets and reservoir....

Technically no, if your battery is good your good. Anytime you flashing or anything that needs a good strong battery or somthing to prevent the battery from not doing its job during the process is the main reason why you need a trickle charger

As much as what you did is clear - I bought my 335 E93 N54 2008 and it has green fluid. I want to change it to OEM and after watching this I still have no idea how to replace the fluid? Flush or add the new blue? Why even do this? The video doesn’t explain anything about the process that I can see?

This a bleeding procedure! If you want a coolant flush procedure you need to look for that.

I'm confused. some posts say bleed with expansion tank open, and while the bleeding process is running add coolant slowly. while some say have it closed such as yours and then adding after the procedure is completed? does it matter? are they both right?

Ardalan Shabestari The bleeder screw is only unscrewed when topping off with coolant. It does help a little, but trapped air is still in there, thus this would be the proper procedure to fully eliminate any and all air that would be trapped.

DO NOT USE PRESTONE OR ANY YELLOW COOLANT!! You want to use a sodium and phosphate free COOLANT, prestone has sodium in it and will corrode aluminum BMW cooling system components.
