HOW TO: Bleeding a brand new Subaru hydraulic timing belt tensioner.

Subaru techs at the dealership say “pull the pin and go” but Gates says you must bleed the air out. I‘ve had terrible luck with these failing, bleed or no. Can it be that complicated? I’ve begun to install belt guards on everything, manual transmission and automatic to avoid the belt jumping and causing catastrophic failures.

Yeah it's an interesting one. The one I was replacing in the video was a gates one that was installed in 2011 and was never bled. It had never failed at all and other than a noisy bearing it probably had another heap of life left in it. Thankfully Subaru tensioners are quite simple. The tensioners on my old Alfa Romeos on the other hand are a nightmare.
