One more worth mentioning is the spam/robo call that waits for a voice response. If you say hello it knows there’s a live person on the line and records your voice. If you remain silent for a few seconds after you pick up the robo hangs up.

Just a bit of clarification. If they are calling you from your area code and first 3; it is not 1 in 10,000 that it is a real call. The odds are not calculable. They simply had 9999 options to dupe you.

Can't do that on older iphone. I like my phone and don't want to upgrade. I do right now have calls to my "home" phone transfered to my cell and I block them there. After doing this for years my block list on my cell phone was HUGE. After years I deleted the list and had to do that one call at a time. What a pain. Now I have a new list maybe over a year which again is huge.

Good tips. They're what I use all the time. I was kinda hoping there was something new. I'm an old guy and I have very few people who ever call me (I prefer text). It's easy to ignore unknown callers especially if the phone doesn't ring. I love it when the phone doesn't ring.

One big issue I have with blocking unknown numbers is that often we get calls from our doctors who are calling from their own mobiles and want to keep their information private, so they will not leave their phone number in a message (thought they would at least leave a message that they called), and in fact when they call now my iPhone's screen shows the caller as "Unknown" and without a phone number.
@macmost3 жыл бұрын
Yes, doctors in particular contribute to this problem with this. They should be calling from business lines. That's easy enough to set up so they can call from their phones too. I can't believe they expect people to pick up when they know it comes through on caller ID like that.

First, use the techniques here as some work with text messages too. But otherwise there isn't much you can do as your phone number is available for anyone to text just like your phone number is to call and your address is to send mail. So if your mobile provider isn't blocking the number, the best you can do is delete and ignore.

There is also the option of pressing the message option when the call comes in which will end the ringing on your end, but continue the ringing on the caller's end and then send the call to voicemail. I use this all the time. If it's a legit call, they will leave a voicemail. If they don't, I block the number and delete it from my recents list. Easy peasy.

Phone companies know the actual number the caller is using. It should be possible for them to do the blocking properly. Also, if there is a mismatch between the actual caller number and the caller ID number, that should be a red flag.

When a call comes in that I don't recognize, I respond with a text of "what's up?" (a native feature of iOS) which ends the call immediately and sends it to voicemail. If it bounces (where I receive a text that it's from a landline and not a mobile device) I know what type of call it is. If by chance it's a real call from a mobile device, the caller then has the choice of whether or not to send a text response. Typically though, they're all spam calls.

Using multiple methods like apps and silence unknown callers will cause more problems when someone is trying to call you and you can't figure out why it won't go through. Also, if you're on hold with customer service and they need to call you back silence unknown callers will prevent that and they have to leave a voicemail and when you call back you're on hold again. I just use do not disturb and silence all calls including repeated calls on contacts and turn it off when I'm expecting a call. Callers can leave a voicemail if needed.

Is that something you'd want to do every time you made a phone call though? And all it would take was one small telco to not do that and it wouldn't work because all the spammers will just call from there. Quite the contrary, people should answer scam callers and waste as much of their time as possible. Especially followers of this channel who are more educated than the average person.
