@robkunkel88333 жыл бұрын
Your husband sounds cool. I had assumed that there was a problem with: A) Legality of animal horn importation. I guess not. I can find nothing on the internet that suggests that. B) Can gentiles be allowed to play? I see some stuff about that on the internet but nothing is too clear, Can we play only to gentiles? Or only among women? I did see something like that but still not clear. Yes, even women sounding the shofa amongst just women is mentioned. Playing a song? I guess that is okay. The instructor just did. Maybe he can do “Melancholy Baby” next time. After all, that is about reflection, too. Shana Tova. 🧸🎉
@gilbrodsky Жыл бұрын
@@robkunkel8833 There is no reason why a gentile can't blow the shofar. However, s/he would not be permitted to do so in the synagogue on the holiday to fulfill the mitzvah of hearing the shofar, any more than a gentile can learn to read Hebrew and even cantillation but would not be allowed to read Torah for the congregation on Shabbat.

It's like playing trumpet, but the mouthpiece is very small. However, on a modern trumpet mouthpiece you can press it onto your lips pretty hard, in fact it's a problem trumpet students tussle with. But I have started on shofar and have a particularly hard to blow one (short, and small mouthpiece opening) and it works for me with nearly no pressure. I will get a better shofar later after I have mastered this hard to blow one.

Great technique and thank you for the pointers. Your teaching style makes it easy. One comment:Since the purpose of shofar is to fulfill the mitzvah on Rosh Hashanah, playing a tune with it is halachically problematic. I wouldn't encourage it. Playing a tune on Shabbos or yom tov with an instrument is not allowed. Blowing the shofar for the mitzvah is allowed on Rosh Hashanah.
@gilbrodsky Жыл бұрын
Hi Jay, thanks for your comments--seeing this in September, 2022. The question of whether a shofar can be played as a musical instrument is a tricky one. It is not halachically prohibited, however it raises the issue of whether something that is embraced ritually can also be embraced secularly. When Hebrew was first suggested as the language of Eretz Yisrael by Ben Yehudah, many objected, saying that it would be a disgrace to use the same language of David's Psalms to direct how to drive a tractor or even tell dirty jokes. Yet people did embrace it, even Haredi Jews in Israel. My purpose in playing secular songs on the shofar is to honor and elevate it, by bringing people who do not appreciate as much as perhaps you and I do even closer to its beauty and potential. Shanah Tovah!

It depends on where you live. If you're in or near a city with a large Jewish population, there will likely be a Jewish bookstore or gift shop, which will have a wide variety of sizes and styles. You can also just google "shofar" online and find one. I would recommend staying away from anything that is artificially embellished (decorative metal plating, etc).
