I'm a resort photographer/avid KJ listener and OUCH it hurts to hear your thoughts on Resort Photographers!!! I am currently based in Maldives and there are sooo many amazing resort photogs here, not to mention it's such a unique opportunity for photographers to live/work in creative roles abroad.

I apologize! That’s not fair to only speak from my few experiences with resort photographers. I’ve had some really poor experiences and very sad interactions at resorts with on-site photographers who really dislike that I was present because it meant that I was taking work away from them. It is very apparent at some resorts, not all, that the resort photographers are paid very little and their client experiences reflects that. Ex: lack of creativity, only one style (flash on the beach), no emphasis on authentic posing, etc. This has actually been my experience EVERY time we have shot at an all-inclusive resort which led me to my comment… but that isn’t fair because I’ve only experienced a handful of resort photographers and they don’t represent resort photographers around the world. I apologize for the harsh comment only from my experience. Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s encouraging to hear there is another world of resort photographers beyond the negative experience we have had! I was wrong to assume that was the standard everywhere. Thank you for gracefully sharing your perspective.

​@@KatelynJames Yes, I think just like with any service you will get what you pay for... the price of resort will reflect the client experience on all levels! (Including some one-size-fits-all photography.) Sorry to hear you've had such poor experiences.

@@KatelynJames Could you please explain that part a little bit more?🙈 If you purchase your own plane ticket and invoice the client, that’s a tax write off? If the plane ticket is built into the wedding package, it’s income and not a write off?

As a hired photographer I charge my clients half my day rate for travel days. That's time I can't use productively if I'm driving, sitting on airplane or shuttles. I'm curious of you bill for the time you are traveling?

I have a question for Ty. Do you ever use your iPhone for video and if so, what do you recommend to get the voice audio without background noise? What did you use in this video?

Ty here! I do use my iPhone for video of my kids and family! The image quality you get from iPhones (and all modern smartphones) is really incredible. As far as audio goes, they do sell some shotgun mics designed specifically for iPhones. You can also use a lav mic that records separately and then sync the audio and video in post. For this specific video we're using a wireless lav system that runs directly into my camera! www.rode.com/videomicme
